Summary
The Japanese language only has two verb tenses; past and present. If one is gone and you can't seem to place yourself in the other, how do you move into a future without the dream that always led you? Shane Hollander has lost hockey; the ability to play and the access to his memories, nine years of accomplishments documented in stark contrast that he cannot seem to see past and find who he was.
Right now, he finds himself on a guided hiking trip everyone claimed would be a good idea, if only a goal to focus his rehab on. Shane doesn't believe he will find himself somewhere in the Canadian wilderness, but the outrageously flirty, forward Russian guide that keeps him upright through every stumble is at least a welcome distraction from the emptiness looming ahead. One foot in front of the other, one step at a time. Sometimes, we don't actually need a direction to start moving.

Summary
Telling people about Ilya is an even bigger deal, somehow, because even those few who are fine with Shane being gay have a difficult time with the Rozanov of it all. Shane doesn’t like dwelling on how much it bothers him because… well, it’s inevitable, isn’t it? He’s always gonna have to defend his decision to be with his boyfriend, like Ilya’s not the kindest, strongest, most beautiful person Shane knows. Like he’s not the love of Shane’s life.

Sneakers off, rope in his hands, he steps silently into Shane’s (their) room, avoiding any potential sound. The real problem is that this is a one-time thing. If he fails on the first leg of the plan, getting into Shane's room undiscovered, they will have a nice night anyway, but the surprise would be ruined because Ilya is almost sure that Shane doesn’t think it’s really going to happen. Shane is not aware of how far Ilya would go, so he has everything he could even dream about. Shane just has to ask, and Ilya would move the goddamned moon from its axis to get him happy.
Even if that happiness involves him breaking and entering their home.
