It doesn’t really matter, he thinks. All he knows is these boys are his world, and he would protect them with everything he has. He knows each of them down to their souls, and they know him equally as well.
But sometimes he feels like he doesn’t know them at all. He knows the important things, like that Alex is gay and Luke will defend his mom to his dying breath while still living in the studio, but he doesn’t know Reggie’s favorite color at the moment, or anything interesting that happened to Alex at school the past week.
The thought strikes a pain through his heart. Maybe it’s because they don’t want to tell you these things, his mind whispers to him. They all know how desperate you were for someone to listen to you, but you think you’re their best friends?

Eddie was dead, Steve is certain of that. He had checked for a pulse himself.
Maybe your hands were shaking too much, a part of him whispers.
Maybe you searched the wrong spot.Why’d they even let you check?
Steve shakes his head. Even if Eddie was alive when they left him, there’s no way he could have survived this long with the injuries he’d sustained. This was probably a trap. After all, hadn’t they agreed Vecna wasn’t really dead?
The lamp next to Steve flickers once.

Rose is sitting on a bench in the hallway, only dimly aware of how she got there. She knows that she’s dead, that there’s some sort of afterlife just like her mama told her about, but right now she’s sitting on the bench, pretending she’s alive and well and only waiting to visit a friend.
She doesn’t say anything when a stranger sits next to her, doesn’t say anything about his strange 1920s magician-like outfit, and startles when he suddenly speaks.

There was an itch in the back of Luke’s head, an itch that was in the shape of Julie’s dream box. Had he learned his lesson from the last time he snuck into Julie’s room? Absolutely, and he still shuddered when remembering the lecture that had followed.
It wasn’t even that he wanted to invade Julie’s privacy, but the moment she’d told him not to look in the box, it was like he couldn’t think of anything else.
Luke can't stop thinking about Julie's dream box. As Julie's attempts to keep him out get more and more elaborate, so do Luke's plans to get past her traps.

It was a Molina family tradition to rent a lake house for the first week of each summer. Last year had been skipped for obvious reasons, but this summer was sure to be the best one yet.
This year, three extra ghosts were joining them. Carlos was glad he’d have someone to hang out with, Julie was grateful for the company, and Flynn was just glad they got to stay home.
(“You know I love you, Jules.” Flynn had said. “But you and I both know how much I hate seaweed.” They’d both shuddered in remembrance of the previous year's fiascos.)

Julie stumbles up the stairs, tears blurring her vision. She pushes past her dad’s room, going straight into hers and shutting the door.
She stops, overwhelmed by the amount of Rose everywhere. Her mom is in the purple walls they painted together, in the beanbag she found at a thrift store; she’s even in the cross on the wall that’s covered in charms.
Her eyes fix on the cross, and she feels a wave of anger rise in her.
She wants to rip that cross off the wall, wants to burn it to ashes, because she had prayed to God to keep her mom. She had begged to take her place, or to heal her, to somehow make everything okay again, and God had done nothing. Nothing.
Or, Julie loses sight of her faith after losing her mom. With the help of some ghosts, she gets it back.
