Summary
A continuation of "A Beautiful Friendship", the story of how Hondo & Maverick originally became friends.
Hondo & Maverick transfer up to NAS China Lake to test Skunkworks' experimental manned version of the SR-72, project name Darkstar. That is, up until they're called to Top Gun after some, ahem, turbulent moments. This turns out to possibly be the most fraught assignment of Hondo's career, because having Maverick's back through training for that mission turns out to come with unexpected challenges. (Like stealing a military aircraft.)
This story starts before the events of Top Gun: Maverick, and runs through the events of the movie.
