This isn’t it, Hua Cheng thinks.
He curls into Xie Lian just a bit more, seeking out a new kind of comfort from the hug now. Xie Lian easily offers it by gently combing his fingers through the ends of Hua Cheng’s hair.
It’s not the same. He doesn’t feel the box of comfort his mother always placed him in when she hugged him. Doesn’t feel the weighted blanket of a mother’s love that presses down on his shoulders and swaddles his heart.
“What’s wrong?” Xie Lian asks gently.

With closed eyes, Xie Lian rested heavily against the cushion behind him. After fun came a post-social crash.
“Gege, you were such a good host that you never tried the cake that I worked hard on,” Hua Cheng said with an air of teasing hurt.
Xie Lian swallowed hard, struck by a bit of regret. No, he hadn’t tried that delicious-looking cake that Hua Cheng had flexed his culinary muscles for that morning, baking and beautifully decorating just because he could.
“I’m so sorry.” Xie Lian turned his head, opening his eyes to look at Hua Cheng. Smiling apologetically, he said, “Tell me there’s a slice left?”
Now that the busy housewarming party has wound down, Xie Lian finally gets a moment to indulge in the cake Hua Cheng baked. Before tasting, he has to admire the craftsmanship.
Hua Cheng, meanwhile, can barely restrain himself; he wants Xie Lian to try it so badly.
