Work Text:

“We used to do this all the time, Zero,” said X, angelic form floating beside Zero. They were walking up towards the highest point of the Resistance base to just look out over the land. The land that had been stricken by war for 100 years that was now controlled by that insidious copy of X.

“Did we?” Zero was still without most of his memories, but that was part of the reason X was always with him - to help him remember. It was slow going, but it was going nonetheless.

“Yes,” X replied. They stood on the platform, X wrapping his arm around Zero’s shoulders. He couldn’t feel anything from it, but it was partially out of habit and partially out of hope that maybe one day he would feel it. Silence as heavy as the clouds below their feet fell over the couple.

Approaching the chamber of the copy, Zero was on fire. More than anything, he was motivated by spite for this copy who used his husband’s name to commit grievous acts of war. He wanted this liar dead.

The door opened as he touched it, and he dashed forward, bearing his saber before him. X floated as fast as he could behind him, himself having a few things to say as well. They entered the dark, cold room, and a pair of glowing red eyes greeted them.

“So, you’ve finally reached me,” said the copy. “You’ve finally gotten angry enough to come for my head,” said the copy.

Zero simply stood there, glaring at him.

“Zero, you know killing me won’t do anything,” said the copy, beginning to laugh.

Zero said nothing.

“You still don’t know where Lord Weil is, and as soon as I’m dead, he’ll attack far worse than anything I have done.”

Suddenly, an inhuman voice bellowed from behind Zero. “Weil doesn’t pretend to be me.” X revealed himself, face appearing as a human skull, carrying two dishes suspended from his hands by copper chains.

The copy gasped, legitimately frightened by the new appearance. “Y- you?! I thought you were dead!”

“I never died, Copy. I simply left to be with Zero.”

Sneering, the copy had regained his usual demeanor. “Causing the world to fall into chaos.”

“That wasn’t my fault and you know it. Stop making excuses for Weil.”

This whole time, Zero had still said nothing. His husband was generally better at talking. However, he felt it was time to speak.

“Why do you follow him anyway? Did he promise you a better life?”

The copy said nothing, realizing that the warbot was gearing up to kill him.

“You know he’s just using you. What’s in it for you?”

“...”

“You don’t get to call yourself ‘Master X’ and spit in the face of everything X fought for.”

“I don’t. I simply fight for what’s right.”

X flew closer to the copy. “You fight for what Weil tells you is right. I never abandoned my goal in service of evil.”

“Then why do you still follow Zero? He abandoned you.” Zero was beginning to see red.

“I left to fight for what’s right!” Zero shouted, lunging forward at the copy, who simply laughed.

“Death is temporary, Zero.”

Zero’s saber connected with his chest, cleanly slicing through the metal, and killing the copy. The last thing he saw was the real X, floating above his head, and Zero standing above him, peering down.

“And judgement is eternal.”

Notes:

Who doesn't like to write something edgy that their 7th grade self would look at and say "wow that's the most badass thing ever!" every once in a while? (Also, I really don't like Copy X.)
