and when you go away, i still see you

Summary:

There’s always been a constant in Jimin’s life: the way he breaks up with people.

“The timing is not right,” he’d say. “If we’re meant to be together, we’ll meet again.” And it never happens.

There’s a guy, though. Jimin doesn’t know his name, he’s actually never talked to him, but he keeps seeing him everywhere. He remembers the lines of his face, by now. He recalls them in his dreams. So what if the words he always recites are true, but he’s always ever said them to the wrong person?

What if this guy is the one? What if they’re meant to be? And what happens when Jimin finally talks to him?

Notes:

Chapter 1: there is no perfect

Chapter Text

“Yeah, I’m at the wholesale market. I’ll get them on the way back, Hyung.”

The call is dropped in less than a second, and he pockets his phone as he turns to Jinyoung. “Groceries?”

“Perilla leaves and pickled radish,” Jimin answers. “Tae can’t eat meat without them.” He’s handed over the 15 stems of mini carnations he was waiting for, and he’s all ready for today. “I’ll get going then, thank you, Jinyoung-ssi.”

“Of course. See you tomorrow.”

And he’s on his way back home for breakfast. The ride is fairly short and silent, except for the faint music playing over the radio and his occasional humming to familiar songs.

He’s been feeling a little under the weather this past week, and one of his customers who unnecessarily kept complaining about his work yesterday sort of worsened it, and yet, he feels none of that negativity today. He woke up feeling refreshed, awaiting a better day, just so sure about it being a good one like he had taken a potion of liquid luck.

“Tae’s gonna love it, hyung,” he assures Yoongi, who’s been fretting over tonight’s dinner with Taehyung. It was his first day as the newly promoted Marketing Head at his company, and he’s been nervous all week about it. It was Yoongi’s idea to give him a small congratulatory party with just the three of them, knowing how much Taehyung would appreciate it. Worrying about it not being perfect is not something Jimin thought Yoongi would be doing, but the mint-haired guy has been trying to find ways to win over the younger’s heart for quite a while now, so Jimin understands it a little, he thinks.

“I know— I mean, he’s a sweetheart, he’d be over the moon knowing we even prepared this for him. I just,” he pauses, and Jimin waits for him to continue. “I think I might tell him today.”

Jimin’s eyes widen in surprise at that, a look of disbelief taking over his face.

“Really? Are you serious? Today?” He gets a nod in response, and his immediate reaction is to scream while going over to the man, hugging him as tight as he can while excitedly telling him how he’s been waiting for this day for so long. “Hyung, I’m so proud of you!” he says as he pulls away.

“Jimin.” Oh, he’s nervous, and it’s written all over his face, as if his wavering eyes and strained voice were anything to go by. “What if he doesn’t feel the same and we end up in this awkward stage of avoiding each other and—”

“Now, hold on, you think he’s going to say no?” Jimin feels the need to laugh out loud when Yoongi says yes to that. “You guys have kissed,” he deadpans. “Made out for over 15 minutes and had me walk in on you two. And also, you’ve had those little hangouts you refuse to call dates— you’re already dating each other at this point!”

That doesn’t seem to convince Yoongi, but the elder nods nonetheless, patting Jimin on the shoulder twice to let him know he appreciates the effort before leaving the room. The blonde sighs at how dense his friends can sometimes be. Being in the middle and knowing how ridiculously in love the both of them were really isn’t as entertaining as it sounds. He feels helpless, being in no place to tell either of them anything about what the other had been telling him. He liked listening to them, though, as frustrating as that can be, because he knew all of it would be worth it when he finally gets to see how much happier they’d be together.

He feels giddy again at the thought, a smile slipping onto his face at how it’s going to be at night. He’s so sure one of them would be crying by the end of it, and he bets it’d be Taehyung, ranting about how he couldn’t have seen it coming. He can’t wait for it.

It’s freezing outside as the car door closes behind him, the autumn breeze brushing against his cheeks and softly blowing his newly dyed silver hair. He takes a deep breath, letting the cold air take refuge in his chest. He senses the serenity of the moment deep in his core and lets a smile slip onto his face.

It’s going to be a good day, he repeats to himself.

Adjusting the hold on the batch of flowers in his hand, he turns to the shop, not expecting to see someone waiting at the front already. He’s usually never late, but talking to Yoongi about setting up things for the night took a little longer than he thought, and he could only get here 10 minutes past his opening time.

“Hey, ‘morning!” he greets as he nears the girl. Digging into his pocket, he pulls out the keys to the building. “Sorry if I kept you waiting for long.”

“Hey, no, it’s alright! I just got here,” she replies sweetly, stepping away for him. He unlocks the door and walks in, keeping the flowers on the counter before he walks to stand behind it. “I wanted to get some flowers for my girlfriend,” he hears her say.

“Sure, are they for any particular occasion?”

“Yeah, it’s our first date,” she responds, smiling at him. “She likes red roses, but would that not be too much for the first date?”

“Hm, I normally would say so, but since she likes it, a pretty bunch wouldn’t be too much, I think.” She nods and asks Jimin to get her a bouquet of red roses wrapped in brown paper and twine. “Oh, this is so pretty, thank you so much.”

“Of course, have a lovely date with your girlfriend.”

He waits for a few seconds before he walks out to get his fresh flowers into water-filled jars. He arranges the batches neatly in vases of the right size and sets them prettily. He takes a look at his list of orders to deliver today and finds none, heaving a sigh of relief, because he really wasn’t in the mood to move around today. He finally settles down to indulge himself with the book that’s been waiting on his desk all day but before that, he spares a glance at the door to see if there’s anyone on their way in and notices a guy leaning against the light pole in front of his shop. It doesn’t take him half a second to recognize who it was the moment his head turned sideways.

Jimin doesn’t know his name, though. He’s actually never talked to him. The situations they meet in never call for a conversation, and he’s never been the overly friendly guy either, which is why all he’s been doing is staring at him for as long as he could.

But he finds it strange how he keeps seeing the man everywhere. He’s pondered over it a million times, and he could barely think of one reason for them to have to meet so often. He isn’t sure when these recurrences began, he cannot even recall their first meeting; all he knows is that he cannot get him out of his head. People come and go all the time, especially in his life, but somehow, this guy stays and he’s barely even here.

Jimin simply sits, not being able to tear his eyes off the man, and it’s a little creepy, he admits, but he ends up defending himself since he’s only admiring someone from afar. It’s not like he can help it either. The man was a beauty. Jimin swears he’d have had books filled with sketches of every detail he’s managed to catch of this guy if he had the talent for it. On second thought though, he’s certain no one can capture such perfection on a piece of paper. It would only seem pointless trying to.

Jimin’s forced out of his thoughts when his vision is suddenly blocked by a teenager entering his shop. He can only hope the slight disappointment he feels does not show on his face as he greets them.

“Hello! Welcome to Bloom!”

And he’s making someone’s day again.

“Okay, Jimin, he’s gonna be home soon,” Yoongi tells him when it hits 7, feeling his heart in his mouth as he repeatedly taps his foot on the floor. “Maybe I shouldn’t—”

“Hyung, I am a second away from pushing you off a cliff right now, you’ve got to calm the hell down.”

Yoongi sighs as he lifts his head to meet Jimin's staring at him with a stern expression on his face. The guy's nervous, and for good reasons. It’s not like he can help it either. 12 years of friendship is on the line if anything goes wrong, and he’s got a list of things that could.

“Hyung, look at me.” Jimin breaks the silence for him, interrupting his negative chain of thoughts. “It’s going to be fine,” he repeats for the hundredth time that day. “I promise, okay? He’s not going to turn you down, and if he does, I know he wouldn’t let that affect your friendship, and neither would you, so quit overthinking. At the end of the day, I've got you both and would never let anything go wrong. Just trust me on this, alright?”

Yoongi finally manages to regain his composure, letting his shoulders fall as he exhaled deeply. The second he begins to speak, though, the doorbell rings, signaling them of Taehyung’s arrival, and he’s panicking again. Jimin sighs heavily as he shakes his head and watches the man hesitantly walk to the front door.

“Hey, how—”

Taehyung jumps on him before he could finish his sentence, hugging him tight saying, “Great, it was great today.” They stay in each other’s embrace for a few long seconds until Jimin giggles at seeing them and they take it as their cue to part. “So, today was great, huh?” Taehyung nods, eyes bright as he begins to tell them all about his day starting from the very beginning.

“You guys prepared a dinner party? For me?” He asks, surprised, when Jimin breaks it to him and he finally sees all the dishes on the dining table. Upon getting a yes from the two of them again, he smiles so wide, Yoongi almost coos. “I love you both so much, I hope you know that I do, with my whole heart. I’ll be back after a shower, okay?”

Right after Taehyung leaves the room, Yoongi sighs as he says, “No more running away.”

“No more running away, hyung,” Jimin repeats to agree, smiling.

The night passes by in flashes with the three of them ending up on the huge couch in the living room and a movie on the screen that only Taehyung and Jimin are paying attention to. Finally, Yoongi decides it’s time, tells himself he’s ready, and pauses the film, grabbing their attention.

“Taehyung,” he calls, and Jimin’s the one squealing on the inside, bubbling with excitement. Meanwhile, Taehyung just turns to stare at Yoongi with a blank expression on his face, confused at what’s going on. “Tae, uhm, first of all, I’m very happy for you, you deserved the promotion and it makes me very happy to know you had a great day at the office.” Jimin tries to wait patiently but he’s aware that Yoongi’s just trying to take his time mustering up the courage to actually tell him about his feelings.

“Uh, thank you, hyung..?” the guy replies, still not sure what’s going on, but he smiles sweetly, appreciating Yoongi’s words.

“Yeah, so I— Well, we—”

“Hyung, did I do something? Are you mad at me?”

“No, no,” Yoongi hurries to deny, and he’s suddenly worried he’s giving off that impression. “I’m not, I—”

Jimin’s trying his very best not to speak or interfere since it’s their moment, but when Taehyung looks at him, eyes filled with concern, he goes, “Hyung, just say it!” and that was the final push Yoongi needed.

“I’m in love with you,” he breathes out. “I have very romantic feelings for you and I think we should be able to hold hands and kiss and do whatever the hell we want to without having to worry about ruining our friendship. So if you... if you think so too, maybe we should—”

His words get cut off with Taehyung kissing him breathless and Jimin looks away screaming and clapping his hands. He’s turning back to Taehyung repeatedly saying ‘yes’ and Yoongi smiling like the world is finally healed.

“Okay, I’m so so happy for you guys, and I get that you’re a couple now and not that anything’s going to be a lot different, but if you have me third-wheeling you guys whenever we’re hanging out together, I swear to God, I will kick you both out of this house.”

It gets silent for a second before they burst into laughter and it’s not long until Jimin realizes that this, was his everything. This was perfect. His life is perfect as it is. He doesn’t need more people, he doesn’t need anything, and he’s sure of it. The three of them have been put through hell and back, and at a point, he was certain nothing could bring them back together, but here they were, always a little happier than the day before because they’ve got each other. Taehyung and Yoongi— they were his people, like nobody else has ever proved to be. And nobody probably will, a little voice in his head adds, and he wants to hold onto that, he really does, but he loses it when he’s seeing another person with him there and it’s crazy because why the hell would he be thinking of someone he doesn’t even know the name of as someone who’d be here to stay?

He’s quickly disregarding the thought and brushing it aside for another day, or maybe never , repeating to himself the unnecessity of new people in his life. It always ends the same way, anyway. It never feels right, and if it ever does, he doubts it until it doesn’t. So he puts his trust in fate and tells every one of them that if they’re meant to be, the universe will find ways to bring them together no matter what, and believe it or not, he believes in it, more than anything else.

What sucks though, is that nobody’s ever come back and if anybody asks, he’s not worried about it. He’s perfectly fine as he is right now, definitely not thinking about a stranger again.

Yeah, it’s not a problem.
