Mi Media Naranja

Summary:

After encountering one’s soulmate for the very first time, one must cultivate a droplet of their blood into the soil as the other half provides the appropriate climate for the plant to thrive. Without one’s soulmate, the plant will perish.

Too preoccupied with fulfilling his dream, Oikawa has never bothered to find his soulmate. Until one day, an overpowering zesty aroma assaults his nose, and he meets a young man who is the epitome of summer. And now, Oikawa has an orange tree struggling to grow in his backyard, so he searches for his other half—su media naranja.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Notes:

Hi! This is my first piece for a Big Bang ever! It was a pleasure to work with wonderful people.

I want to thank my beta Mor for dealing with my shit about the most mundane and ridiculous things I dm'd her about this story. I'm sorry for putting Mor through this and thank you for your help.

This story was inspired by this song and music video "Ojos Color Sol". I just love use of magical realism in the video and in the lyrics. So it all clicked to me one night that Oihina would be perfect for this song.

Since canonically Oikawa is "Latino" at the end of the manga (I don't care if you disagree...I'm kidding don't take me seriously), I just wanted to write Oikawa living in Argentina and just him experiencing the Argentina culture as well as the rest of the Latin American culture as a foreigner. Plus with Shouyou, too! It's honestly just me projecting my love for my culture/heritage and how Latinx/e beautifully integrate magical realism in almost every piece of media.

But anyway, I just wanted a soulmate and magical realism Oihina au and them just vibing in Latin America.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Dedicado a mi media naranja. Mi otra mitad. Mi vida. Mi alma. Mi amor.

With a droplet of blood from one half of a soul and the optimal weather emitting from the other half, a seedling sprouts from earth when two souls fuse into one.

Since the sapling represents the bond and adoration between two soulmates, it will only grow when the fated-pair’s love intensifies. Hence, the flowers will release a more pleasant fragrance and the fruits will taste sweeter.

As long as one or both soulmates remain alive, their love will never die and thus, their plant will continue to flourish until the two bodies return to earth.

“I finally found you, mi media naranja. Let’s grow our love together!”
