An Elemental Heart of Courage - ALTT: Vol. I

Summary:

Link and Zelda are twins born into the Hylian Royal Family during an Era of Peace. Long ago was the Age of Heroes- Legends and Fairy Tales rarely spoken of. Link, however, struggles with his identity growing up, disliking the life of a Prince and being the heir to the throne.

However, signs from Ancient Prophecies and Legends make themselves known again, and the Royal Twins are believed to be the Chosen Hero and Priestess of past Legends. Mysteriously, before Link and Zelda can properly begin, they're separated by a divine entity into a foreign world- Teyvat- where no one knows who they are, or know of Hyrule.

Thus, Link sets out on a journey to find her true self, to develop her character, to befriend Teyvat's people, to make new connections, to harness control over the Seven Elements of Teyvat, to live the life she's desired most...

... and to find her missing twin sister Zelda, whom she holds dearly to her heart. Link seeks out the Seven Archons across the Seven Nations of Teyvat, believing these living gods have the answers she seeks.

Hyrule, however, suffers in their absence. It goes on, existing... and forging a connection to Teyvat, unbeknownst to all.

Notes:

A Link to Teyvat is the second fic I've ever written, and my most ambitious. The idea of a Zelda x Genshin crossover came to me when thinking on how people would compare BOTW and Genshin for a good while back when Genshin Impact launched in 2020. There was not many fics or even art crossing the two over when I was exploring the idea back in 2022, so I decided to have my own go at it... with Link now being the Traveler in Teyvat, and her interactions with the cast of Genshin. Particularly, who she interacts with, befriends, and makes close relationships with will help shape her character's growth into the eventual Heroine of Courage.

On top of that, with Hyrule's setting being loosely based on BOTW/TOTK, many changes and liberties are in order. Right off the bat, while Link is "Prince" and "Son" of the Hylian Royal Family who's expected to be "King", she's a Transgender Woman who never had the chance to live as herself growing up, and I made sure her identity is integral and handled well in the story. Her transness will have lots of implications and hardships- like the lives of many trans folk in our world, as it can be incredibly messy and different for all of us (I'm a Transgender Woman myself who's living in current day America. While it's not the worst place to be, and I'm incredibly fortunate for the luck and opportunities I've had, the current political climate and atmosphere of more than half the US makes it... a struggle more often than not). There will be ups for her, as Teyvat provides an escape and ground for her to grow and meet new people... but she will need to confront her past head on eventually- taking on roles she would have otherwise avoided if she didn't have her chance at growth.

TAKE NOTE: It is greatly advised (and assumed) one is familiar with Genshin Impact's story and lore already, as some events won't be fully covered but still have happened like in the game (be it some story quests, segments in the Archon quests, or even some world quests- some of which might be adapted into their own smaller side chapters), but with Link as the Traveler, and Zelda the Abyss Twin. The Zelda aspects as mentioned are loosely based on BOTW/TOTK, with many things changed up or removed... and the past games in the series- past Heroes in particular- also being relevant and apart of Link's growth.

A Link to Teyvat is written by me (borkiee :D), while my breastie KaydemonLP is co-author for if anything prevents me from uploading/continuing the story. All Characters and IP's used from the Legend of Zelda and Genshin Impact belong to Nintendo and HoYoverse/Cognosphere respectively.

Any feedback is appreciated and I hope you all enjoy this strang brainrot story of mine that I put way too much energy into ;3

PLEASE READ - 5/20/2025:

So you're probably wondering why this fic has been going since 2022, yet isn't done... WELL-

At first life got in the way and I lost a lot of motivation to write. Once I bounced back, however, my writing skills improve by then and I noticed how the pacing, poor quality, errors, and other aspects of the story bothered me- I knew I could do better...

... and my silly brain thought to replace the old chapters opposed to leaving them, then making a new fic post outright.

While 17 Chapters are technically live... not all of them are good to read. To know what chapters have been fully rewritten and readable, the beginning chapter notes will have disclaimers with chapter length and trigger warnings. The few chapters I haven't rewrote yet are from the old version of the story that I have yet to replace, and they have a warning in their beginning notes to not read them until rewrote.

-Castle Town, Central Hyrule, Hyrule-

-Toto, 3:35pm, 13th of Ja’Abu, PE 10000-

One Afternoon, during the beginning of the hot summer season within The Kingdom of Hyrule, inside the Royal Castle, a miracle of life had occurred. The Queen of Hyrule had given birth to twins: a boy and a girl. The newborns cried loudly as they were delivered, being given to their parents without delay to hold. Their little girls’ emerald green eyes took after the King himself, being full of life. He had the perfect name for her, being it was one he liked, and a tradition that, to his knowledge, had not been followed in thousands of years according to ancient texts. “Honey… how do you feel about the name Zelda?” He asked.

The Queen was delighted to hear the name. It was beautiful, and the name was highly traditionalized with the royal family generations ago. “I love it… my dear little Zelda… she will be a wonderful person one day, strong and kind.” The Queen said humbly, looking back to her baby boy in her arms whom had sapphire blue eyes that calmed the soul, taking after her. “Link… yes. Link, my dear Link.”

The King of Hyrule was ecstatic to finally be a father, daddy’s precious Zelda, and daddy's buddy Link. He can fulfill his dream of teaching his own son how to use a sword, ride a horse, and be an honorable Prince and King. “He will be a good man and King; I am sure of it.” The King said warmly.

The Queen looked at her husband being giddy, giggling at the display. “Let them be kids first, okay hon?” The King had an uneasy, but honest chuckle.

“Yes, of course they will have that, especially in our time of peace.” The King said, knowing during this time of peace, everything should be well.

Peace.

A luxury most took for granted, one that never lasted forever, but still a luxury the people enjoyed. The Hylian, Sheikah, Gerudo, Zora, Rito, and Goron people had all finally formed an alliance of peace and prosperity. Originally started over two decades ago by the Hylian peoples own King: Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule. A man of tradition and ambition, who grew up learning of the past tales of when Hyrule's people where all united. While the Sheikah were always loyal to the Hylian Royal Family since time immemorial, the rest have always been on and off, according to ancient history.

While most of Hyrule was all on speaking terms, some groups were more hesitant and hostile than others at times. As such, King Rhoam desired unity- unity where everyone lived in peace together, and worked together against all common troubles. Having set out and made connections during his youthful Prince days, he embarked once again to bring leaders on board, one by one.

After many talks, negotiations, and arguments with his own stubborn council, King Rhoam managed to properly reunite the Hylian and Sheikah people with not only the welcoming Zora and Goron people, but the proud and free Rito and Gerudo people as well. All were elevated and held together as equals, and proper trade and relations were setup between each region.

... however, some groups of people- Hylian and Sheikah- disliked the fact the other races were brought into the fold. More and more saw it as their King betraying his own people, splitting off to create their own group, the Yiga Clan. Consisting of Hylians and Sheikah, the Yiga sought out to punish all who supported the King's new vision for Hyrule, and anyone not a Hylian or Sheikah on their lands. They became well organized, managing to evade and wipe out the United Hyrulean force's many attempts to thwart them.

Soon, King Rhoam and his now grown council of people all around Hyrule came up with a plan. Approaching the Yiga Clan with a smaller group of the best of the best, a warrior from each side of Hyrule was sought out. Rhoam and his righthand man- his brother in arms, and best friend- the King and leader of the Gerudo people, had handpicked by them: the Gerudo King's Wife who was a master swordswoman in her own right, the Princess of the Zora people who excelled as a healer, a Goron warrior who had traveled across Hyrule, a Rito Captain who was the best marksman in all Hyrule, and a loyal Sheikah who used to serve as the Royal Family's personal (now retired) assassin.

These people were dubbed Champions, who would worked together in their small group to disband and scatter the Yiga Clan across Hyrule. With their conquest completed, they were treasured allies and friends of the Royal Family... and a long-lasting peace for future generations.

A peace for Rhoam's children. The Royal Twins.

Luckily born right after the alliance was forged, it allowed them to grow up in a more diverse Hyrule than before. Both the twins now being ten years old, Link and Zelda were incredibly energetic and lively children.

Zelda was a gentle soul who loved research, history, and anything scholarly, along with dabbling in alchemy, taking after her mother the Queen. The young Princess did have a bit of a wild side as well, climbing trees and getting her dresses dirty, and playing with wooden swords with her brother even. Her mother encouraged it early on; their father was a little worried, but allowed it, especially with the Gerudo Champion- Lady Urbosa- acting as a teacher for Zelda on how to wield a sword properly, and being the perfect role model. Urbosa was like an aunt to Zelda, as the Queen and Urbosa had a close bond as children themselves- almost like sisters- hence Zelda viewing Urbosa as “Aunt Urbosa”, and her own child as "Cousin Riju". Like the Queen and Urbosa being sisters in bond, the Hylian and Gerudo Kings were like brothers once they became an alliance and adventured all over Hyrule to unite the people as one, both of whom met their now Queen's in the process.

Then, there was Link: a young, respectable boy who, for a ten-year-old, was quite wild and outgoing, loving to ride horses (despite never being in control) and swinging swords. He loved hearing about the other lands and people in Hyrule from his father’s stories and allies, and spent time with them just as much as Zelda did with Urbosa. The Goron Champion- Daruk- quickly took a liking to the young Prince, and just like Urbosa was to Zelda, Daruk was the “cool Uncle” who came over sometimes that Link loved to be around, affectionately calling him “Uncle Daruk”. While the size difference was there, Daruk trained with Link the best he could whenever the child asked, generally with defensive techniques, but was more a moral support person Link could fall on if anything, and storyteller at heart about his homeland and the many creatures he encountered across Hyrule, always capturing Link’s amazement and wild imagination.

Then there was the Champion and Princess of the Zora- Mipha- Link’s best friend. Having met the Zora Princess when he was younger, they always spent a lot of time together, playing and sparing with each other, swimming, and confiding with one another. Whenever Link hurt himself, Mipha would always heal him with her magic, usually scolding him only to get an uneasy chuckle back from the boy. Mipha herself appeared a little older than Link and Zelda, but only bit a bit. Being a Zora, she had a longer lifespan and aged slower, making her essentially a late teenager to the royal twins who were only ten. By the time they reached sixteen, they would be as tall as her, but she'd be a young adult mentally. Despite that, their friendship and bond weren’t dampened at all.

Then, the last Champion- Revali of the Rito- whom rarely interacted with the twins. He saw his duty and work as more important, yet he always found himself lending an ear to the two of them to be kind. Even Revali had to admit, the Princess always impressed him with how smart she really was for her age, listened a few times to her talk about new things she learned. The Hylian Prince, on the other hand, always wanted to learn how to use a bow from him only, yet the best marksman in Hyrule always refused, telling him that his teachings would not be good for a beginner who wanted to rush things. Truthfully, Revali would have tried teaching the boy a thing or two... but he was far too hyper for his own liking.

All in all, life was good: King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule had the perfect alliance with his allies, had his beautiful and smart Queen by his side, and his own beautiful children… yet one of them seemed off.

Link didn't seem to have much interest in his royal heritage, and just liked being a normal child: never liking to dress fancy and preferred wearing basic tunics that resembled peasant wear. The boy’s favorite color was greens and browns opposed to the golds and blues of the royal family, generally wanting to represent himself how he saw fit. Being how young Link still was, Rhoam allowed it. After all, he knew he should let Link be a child first, and he even would take him out of Castle Town sometimes so just the two of them could go camping in the woods, telling him stories as well: about the vast world and provinces of Hyrule Rhoam been to in his youth, or stories about past legends and Hero’s. Link of course loved these stories, wanting to go on a big grand adventure of his own, to explore the unknown of the world. He had been to only Zora’s Domain, Rito Village, Kakariko, and Hateno, but the latter half always bored Link. He wanted to explore places like the Gerudo Desert, the Great Forest, Death Mountain, the Hebra Mountains, maybe far beyond Hyrule… yet his father limited him because he was still just a young child… and the Prince.

Rhoam would tell Link that one day, he would lead and have many responsibilities, meaning no wandering the world to the degree the child wanted, which naturally caused the boy to rebel occasionally. As time went on, and Link came to realize what he was and the kind of life he would have to live, he became more and more against it. He disliked being a Prince … disliked clothing a Prince should wear… disliked being called a Prince, it all just felt wrong. Link assumed he just didn’t want to be of royalty, but he knew he would have to become King one day, and the thought alone made him feel dread… then he would have to stay put in the castle. Around his tenth year, Link was in full rebellious mode, being at odds with his father quite often as he would try to get out of the growing responsibilities and expectations placed upon him.

Unlike with his father, Link and his twin sister Zelda were close, and often at times inseparable, unless one or both had their own responsibilities to attend to. Link was quite interested in alchemy and experiments just like Zelda, but could never get the hang of it, in turn, causing Zelda to giggle when he made strange concoctions. Their father ultimately told Link he should not bother with it, and to leave it for his sister. The comment that stung more than it should have, but thankfully Zelda on her free time showed him many experiments and research she had anyways, so at least he could watch and listen. Most of the time, Link and Zelda would explore the castle and read stories together, or both would watch Gerudo, Zora, Rito, and Goron Warriors train, or even spar themselves (with wooden swords), with the two being trained by sword masters and Urbosa herself.

Finally, there was Link and Zelda’s mother- the Queen of Hyrule- a loving, nurturing and gentle woman whom was previously a traveling scholar and archeologist. She would tell her children about her youth as well, and even how she and Urbosa were always close friends and both met their father and the Gerudo King. Whenever either of the twins were upset, their mother would speak to them in a gentle, soothing voice to ease their nerves, along with singing for them as she held them. One tune she would use as a lullaby for Link in particular, helping the boy drift to sleep or calm him down. Of course, Rhoam had no issues with his wife’s treatment and handling of Link, but when the boy both neared his tenth birthday and became rebellious, Rhoam worried his wife was babying Link too much for his eventual role in life.

“My dear little Link,” the Queen said softly, holding her child close to comfort him, “everything will be fine; your father just needs time to cool down.”

Link, tears running down his face, shivered as he tried to calm down, clinging onto his mother's dress as he sat in her lap. Her arms gently secured him in place, filling him with a much-needed sense of comfort and safety. “Does he hate me now because I said I don’t want to be a Prince?”

His mother ran her hand through Link’s messy, dirty/gold blond hair, which was a product of her husband's formerly golden hair (that's grayed over time), and her red hair. Her fingers slowly sunk into her child’s hair various, and gently she stroked it through the strands. “Of course not. He still loves and cares for you very much… you maybe should not have said it during a meeting with the council and Champions present… but what’s done is done: a lesson to learn for next time, right?” She said smiling down at him.

Link looked up and sniffed, wiping away the tears on his face. “Okay… but I still don’t wanna be a Prince, or a King. I just wanna be me… I wanna be Link.”

She kept smiling down at her child, looking into her own blue eyes that Link had inherited from her, being so full of life, determination, ambition, light... Courage, even. “You are, Link! You always will be yourself- nothing will change that. Only you can live the life you choose- no one else can choose for you… but you are still young, so give it more time to think on.” She then started to hum his favorite lullaby, relaxing the child as he drifted to sleep… being the last time Link ever heard his mother sing.

Shortly after these events, the Queen of Hyrule fell to an illness. It took its toll on everyone and took time, but eventually Link and Zelda managed to cope with losing their mother. Zelda held herself together for them both, comforting Link who was absolutely devastated having to lose her. The Champions did what they could to help the twins in their time of mourning, along with Rhoam himself, whom tried his best to comfort his children, but the loss of his wife hit him hard as well… and he still had to focus on the kingdom as well… and so did his now growing children.

-Castle Town, Central Hyrule, Hyrule-

-Faloraa, 12:16pm, 29th of Agaat, PE 10014-

Four years after the death of the Queen, life returned to normal for the most part. Link had sat through political meetings with his father and his councilors, and worked on his training and history lessons, he naturally grew sick and tired of it. After a particularly long meeting and sparring session of being scolded, he went to Zelda’s room to find her reading from a pile of books from the royal library, causing her to look up and smile warmly. “Hey Link! How were the political meetings with father?” Zelda asked happily.

Sighing, the Prince let himself fall over onto his twin’s bedside- the Princesses bed was neatly made and had a blue blanket with gold linings, matching the royal blue of the curtains that were open letting light into the room. It was noon and Link was already exhausted, albeit more so mentally then anything. “Tired… I am sick of the meetings. Only thing I enjoyed was the training, but even that is becoming less enjoyable” The boy huffed, rolling over to be on his back. “I am getting better; just hate being told I need to fix this or that, or that I am being too extreme with just training or not taking it as seriously as I should.”

Zelda raised an eyebrow at her brother. “What do you mean by ‘too extreme’?”

Link huffed and sat up on the side of the bed. “Well… running around being fast to tire out the knight or squire I am training with in their heavy armor, or throwing dirt up into their face. I even kicked a squire I was training with one time and disarmed him, but was told to slow down and take it easy.” Link kicked his shoes off and stretched. “They keep saying I am being too hostile and undisciplined!”

Zelda sighed, rolling her eyes while placing her book down. “Honestly Link… I get it you dislike being talked down to, but at least try and heed their words. You are a Prince after all. There are expectations of us.” Zelda then got up and sat next to Link who was on his back. "I'm sure if you take your time and perform how they expect, soon in maybe a year or two, they might train you how you want. You're not fighting monsters or anything right now… and besides, their training you in self-defense, not to seek fights.”

Hearing that irked Link, rolling his eyes to ignore his sister as he let himself fall over again onto the bed. “I wish Daruk was here… I still am practicing these tricks he taught me- they are quite useful, but I'm a bit small, where some of them are just meant for a Goron. Still, I find him better than the old Hylian knights or father. At least Daruk is fun to be around!”

Zelda chuckled at Link, deciding to try and humor her brother just a little bit. “Well, maybe Urbosa can teach you more. She is a human like us, and she loves both of us like her own daughter Riju, so she would be perfect for you…” as there was a pause, Zelda turned her gaze over to Link with a grin, “…unless you're embarrassed by getting knocked on your butt by a woman.”

Link knew Zelda meant that as a tease, yet it didn't bother him one bit. “Honestly… I don't care? I always been interested in the Gerudo and their culture, and find it cool they are all women.”

Zelda eyed Link curiously at his wording. “You find it cool?”

Link paused, stuttering nervously as he tried to explain. “Well, I guess I admire them, more than the Hylian soldiers at least which are all just men… and they are free spirited, too like the Rito. I like that- they fight how they want and look super cool!”

Zelda took that in, surprised at Link's response. “Well, I know the Zora have women in their ranks, too. Regarding the Rito and Gorons… I can’t say- heck, the Gorons are genderless.” Zelda then got an envelope and parchment out, placing both onto her desk. “I can write to Urbosa, Daruk, or Mipha. One of them can maybe visit for a time and train with you.”

Link loved the idea of seeing either of them again, however he seemed resistant. “I don’t want to bother them; they probably are busy and do not have the time for such a trivial thing.”

Zelda huffed, folding the parchment back and putting it away. “I mean we could always go visit them… assuming father would agree.”

“He never would, he would say it is a waste of time and I should be focusing on ‘Prince Stuff’.” Link complained, rolling over onto his side and even hugged a pillow. “You’re the lucky one, not having to have such high expectations of being a King and manly.”

Curious as to why Link was so hung up on having to be King and 'manly', Zelda decided to prod him. “I mean, while I get the King part, you know it’s not all perfect for girls and women, right? I must always keep the perfect, serene image expected of a daughter of the Royal Family... and dresses can be a pain. Father isn’t against me wanting to be a scholar like mother, yet I know many Nobles and council members want me to act like a 'proper' lady...”

As much as Link wanted to just roll his eyes, knew Zelda had a point. More and more would random Nobles and council members ask if the Princess still 'wastes' her time at playing scholar. “Okay, that is a fair point... I don’t know what any of that is like for you-” Link admitted, “- but I still stand by you not having to wear such ugly clothing that’s so stuffy. I hate how the clothes father has made for me look and feel... unlike your pretty dresses- even if they’re hard to move in, I think they look-” Link, moments after speaking those words, tensed up squeezing the pillow tightly as what he said processed through his mind. Pretty dresses? Why am I thinking of such a thing?! Why on earth would I ever say such a thing out loud as if I were jealous? I’m not jealous! I’m a boy, not a girl! I can’t wear a dress, or else… in all honesty, Link did not know why he “could not” wear one, only to then question himself and wonder more about the dress.

Zelda’s eyes widened as she just started at Link whom was facing the other way lying on her bed. The sentence caught her off guard and made her recall times Link would comment on her dresses or even hair, in the forum of compliments or on how comfy and nice they looked, but Zelda assumed they were just that: compliments.

She did remember they both would always watch Gerudo women who were at the Castle train, and Link was always enamored by them- getting books from Urbosa on Gerudo culture, combat, and one time, fashion... Regardless, Zelda had a thought and giggled, thinking she was about to embarrass Link. “Since you’re so interested, I bet you wanna try one on, yeah?” The two dared each other to do things before, either goofy or foolish, but never to put Link in a dress.

Link felt his heart thump, slowly looking over to Zelda nervously. “Me? Put on a dress?” For some reason, the thought made his heart race and he got excited- so much so, all rationality in his brain vanished as he pursued what made him feel good. “I… um-” Sitting up, Link held the pillow close to his chest, hugging it tightly while he had an audible stutter in his voice, keeping his eyes away from Zelda’s. “S-sure um, do you… hav-ve a green one?” Link was surprised at his own words, and questioned why he was pressing on. What am I doing!? He assumed he would look silly and in turn, get annoyed and embarrassed while Zelda laughed.

Zelda, however, was even more intrigued by both Link’s body language and response, noticing his ear tips and face seemed to have flushed pink. Not questioning it, she smiled as she searched her closet and found a sleeveless green dress that had a dark green ribbon at the waist. Handing the dress to Link, he slowly held and looked at the dress: it was basic, but it looked like… something he would wear himself, almost like one of his tunics? Just was longer and had a ribbon over a belt. It was his color and looked to be good for basic activities or playing outside. “There you go- it’s my only green one. I don’t get to wear it much.”

“Th-thank you... can yo-ou, um… turn ar-round Zel?” Startled that she forgot to give him the privacy, Zelda awkwardly walked behind a clothing screen in her room to look away. While completely backwards, it still gave Link the privacy to change out of his clothes and nervously slid into the dress… and he felt something: something weird. It was a… happy feeling, a feeling of joy, a feeling of something right… very right… and mass confusion.

“Can I look now?” Zelda asked, hearing Link tip toe across the floor and tap the screen. Looking around, she saw her twin brother in one of her summer dresses: his face and ears glowed red, and he had his hands held together in front of him and feet firmly planted close together. “Aww you look like such an adorable little Princess!” Zelda said teasingly to poke fun at Link. “Maybe you could actually enter Gerudo town dressed like this!”

Zelda expected Link to tell her to shut up or become even more embarrassed… but instead he responded with something out of left field. “Do I… do I really look like a Princess? You think I could actually enter Gerudo town?”

She was not expecting that to be Link’s reaction, and it showed on her race. “You… like it?” Link simply broke eye contact with his sister- his face becoming redder and nodded. He really likes the dress? Lost in thought, Zelda realized she was staring directly at Link: taking notice of his messy blond hair with its bangs and small tendrils hanging around his face, making him look quite pretty. Their father always wanted him to have it cut or fashioned "properly" for a Prince, but Link always refused. “You do actually look really pretty, Link. Wanna see how you look?”

Looking back up to Zelda after hearing her words, Link was full of doubt and under the assumption his twin was pulling his leg. Deciding to humor her, he walked to a large mirror in her room against a wall by her closet, suddenly losing all the air in his lungs.

He looked… pretty.

He saw a girl.

His hands went up to cover his mouth from a light gasp that escaped him as his face became redder- tears already beginning to run down his face slowly. “Link are you okay?! I did not mean to make you upset!” Zelda cried, growing more and more concerned with if she was pushing this too far.

Zelda grabbed Link’s arm to try and comfort him, half expecting him to flinch and pull away… yet he didn’t: he just kept staring at himself in the mirror. “I’m not sad, just… overwhelmed by… feelings?” Link said in a muffled voice into his hands. “I… I look like a girl? I don't know what I’m feeling, I-” Zelda led her brother to the side of her bed, sitting beside him and giving him a hug. “I… like it." The boy mumbled. “Why do I like this? I’m a boy, a Prince! I should not like this, but I do…” I look like a girl… I feel this weird joy in my chest, and I don’t know what it is… but I like it. It feels so right. I LIKE that I look like a girl and am dressed as one... was what Link wanted to say, but he was full of so much confusion, joy, comfort, and anxiety, overwhelming his thoughts. “Zelda? What’s wrong with me?” He asked instead, tearing up more. Zelda’s heart sank from hearing her brother ask such a thing, watching as more tears began to fall. “I’m so confused! What’s going on? Why do I like this more than my normal clothes father had tailored for me? He’ll kill me! Everyone will make fun of me!”

Zelda hugged Link tightly, being lost for words as she held onto him tightly. “Shh… it’s okay. I do not think there is anything wrong with you, nor do I think father will kill you.” The last part was half a lie; she knew their father would not react well, that was for sure. “I’m sure Mipha and Urbosa would find you pretty, too, and Daruk wouldn't judge you!” Zelda said as she gave Link a tissue to wipe his tears and blow his nose. “You look really pretty though, Link. People would think you're my sister!” She said trying to come up with anything that could possibly calm Link down. Zelda did not judge him, believing it was cute that her brother liked the dress, so she just said what came to mind with full honesty.

Link’s eyes widened at his sister's honesty and support, but most importantly, the prospect of being Sisters. “Me… your sister?” The thought brought joy to Link’s chest, although it was impossible to happen in his mind.

Zelda looked at her brother, still smiling with positivity. “Yep! I mean it! You really do look like a twin sister, just with shorter hair! You can try on more clothes if you like! Heck maybe we can ask Urbosa to bring some Gerudo clothing- they have so many different things you could try on- dresses, skirts, tops, sirwals, pants, shorts, robes- you name it!”

Gerudo clothing? Goddesses, the thought alone made Link feel faint with excitement

While many Hylians (mostly men) tended to believe and spread the notion that Gerudo only dressed in revealing outfits, it couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact, while there were outfits for some occasions, festivals, or general wear that may be more revealing that what Hylians are used too, the Gerudo dress in various ways. Typically, it's to avoid sunburn while keeping airflow to stay cool under the sun- or if not in the desert, clothing no different from a Hylian. Armor usually consisted in a similar manner to Hylian Knights, but was lighter with some metal plating- with hides with steel and gold usually incorporated to keep them protected. Either way, Gerudo were quite fashionable, and proud of it- and Link adored it all immensely. “I... I don’t know if I want her knowing for now… but can I try more of your stuff, Zel?”

Zelda beamed, nodding furiously. “Of course, anything for my brother!” Hugging Link, she giggled happily into it, however she noticed he tensed, causing her to back out of the embrace. “Are you okay? Did I do something? Am I being too aggressive?”

Link twiddled his fingers and looked back at Zelda in a very shy manor, stuttering on his words. I can’t tell her to call me her sister, can I? That would be too weird… wouldn’t it? “Um… it was nothing.” Link still was trying to figure out his emotions, but as far as he knows, he liked it when Zelda said he looked like a girl and could be her sister, but that can’t be, it’s not possible: Link is a boy, her brother… yet he wanted to ask one more thing. “So, um… can you show me more things now?”

Zelda smiled again as she sprung upwards to begin digging into her closet. “Of course, Link! I have some more dresses and tunics you can try on, and some skirts! OH, also I can do your nails as well!”

Link had no idea what he got himself into, but whatever it was… he liked it.

-Castle Town, Central Hyrule, Hyrule-

-Medingo, 5:52pm, 5th of Satori, PE 10016-

The twins now being sixteen years old, Link explored himself more and more over the past two years, becoming a little happier and more comfortable with himself, growing out his hair even longer, and a few times he had Zelda paint his nails with her own polish. In private he still would dress however he desired, enjoying the feeling of skirts and dresses, along with tunics he liked that might have seemed too effeminate to his father- unlike the overly complicated, expensive, and uncomfortable stuff he normally presented in.

Now that quite a bit of time had passed, Zelda wanted to find out why Link was like this, for better understanding on her end.

After all, she was a scholar- it only made sense for her to learn more on things that interested her or were of value.

Even after asking Link many questions (while trying to avoid making him uncomfortable), she secretly had looked in the royal library and tried to find any books about anything possibly relating to how Link was, but without asking what kind of book would contain such information as she did not want anyone finding out. Zelda eventually found the section with books about mental conditions, and then she found one in the mental “disorders” category.

Reading into it, she found something matching her brother’s description: a condition labeled “gender confusion” that detailed reports of people feeling they are in the wrong body and identify with the opposite sex, or even some being neither or a mix. It stated that most the time these people suppressed their feelings out of fear of being shunned... or worse, and would often never openly speak about their feelings. Some “conditions” were just simply some males being more feminine, or females being a bit more masculine personality wise, which seemed silly to include as a trait.

Link liked dressing up and expressing himself more femininely than other boys his age- sure, and Link did dislike being called a Prince, but it was due to it being royalty related, which Zelda knew for a fact... but Link never outright said he disliked being called a boy … though he did show discomfort whenever she referred to him as such. Does Link just like feminine things more… or… is he scared to say anything more?

Whatever the case, Zelda didn’t see an issue with it as it harmed no one, and importantly, it made Link happy. The book went on to explain how this “disorder” was unsolved on what caused it, and that there have been many attempts at “correcting” it in patients who showed it, only for them to act how society wanted them, causing them more dissociation.

The whole thing perplexed Zelda: what is wrong with letting someone be themselves? In her eyes, it seemed weird that there was an obsession with preventing it among Hylians- at least going off these rather old books. Link was her twin, and nothing made her happier than seeing him express himself in different ways that made him comfortable, happy, and overall lively.

...

As time eventually went on, things like puberty would naturally occur... and before he knew it, reality finally hit Link: his body was growing in ways he did not want. Seeing his sister and other women made him especially envious, and despite being a late bloomer, puberty still came, with slightly broader shoulders, and an ever so deeper voice. Even if his voice was quite androgynous, it was not like Zelda’s soft, comforting voice, which made Link greatly dislike his own, impacting his self-confidence even more.

Sure, he could now go out and explore some of Hyrule, yet the problem however is he was not satisfied with himself, and he was still forced into royalty. He wanted to leave the castle permanently and go out farther alone into the world, and most importantly, be in body and clothes he was more comfortable in openly, not in secret.

His father noticed how he was acting and presenting himself, and despite both being ever so subtle, he occasionally requested Link cut his hair, or fashion it in a more “masculine” style for a Prince, and to cut and clean his nails. Even townsfolk and knights who saw Link’s long flowy hair, painted nails, and overall demeanor took notice, with many Hylians having opinions on it- in the face of Royalty or not- people talked. Some simply asked questions, some maybe laughing... others, not so positive. The more it went on, the more rumors began to go around, reaching the King and his allies’ ears... and plummeting the Prince’s self-image to an all-time low.

“I wonder… you guys heard about the rumors people are spewing out of the Prince, right? What do you all think?” The Goron Champion Daruk asked, sitting at a table on the floor within one of the many dining areas of Hyrule Castle, and with him was the other Champion’s. “When we came back just now, I heard some Hylian Knights talking about it… and I have to wonder why so many like to scrutinize the little guy over such a thing- maybe it's cuz I'm a Goron so I don't get it.” Chowing down on a large piece of rock roast, pebbles fell all over the table and floor, clacking about and making a mess around where Daruk sat- a mess someone would surely have to sweep up later.

Revali- the Rito Champion- had to think on it for a moment, beginning to chuckle to himself. “I occasionally see him sparing with other knights, and he's incredibly undisciplined.” Leaning back into his chair, the Rito stretched his wings out. “Honestly, if it is true, that would be quite something. The Prince of Hyrule, who is to rule one day and make sure our land continues to prosper… and he seems to not even take it seriously, playing around instead, while we do all the work.”

“Is it that big of a deal? I say it’s a nice change of pace.” Urbosa- the Gerudo Champion- responded, bringing her glass closer to her face. “Hylians could learn a thing or two from other people. While being a mostly female dominated race, most of the Gerudo are taught that gender itself is mostly a state of being and expression- and we don’t look down or judge anyone who’s not fitting the traditional 'roles'.” Taking a drink from her wine, the Gerudo placed the glass down, staring down Revali. “While Voe- men- are prohibited from entering our major settlements, that was done centuries ago mostly to protect our people from Hylians, and are more flexible now. Whatever the case is, who’re we to judge the child? He’s doing no harm, and still is young, and people need to mind their own business- leave him be.”

Stopping though mid poke of his fork into his food, Revali looked across the dining hall they resided in, his gaze landed on all the various paintings and expensive decorations against the walls- specifically a picture of three different generations of Hylian Kings. “It’s not that I have anything wrong with how the kid likes to present… just, I would expect the Hylian Prince and future King to… have a little more back bone? Take their role as future king more importantly than acting like a girl? To be honest, I would have maybe taught him how to use a bow when he asked… if he proved to me that he was disciplined and patient- and not just backing down after I refused.”

“Honestly… I have to agree with Lady Urbosa.” Daruk said- using the title lady despite all of them being on a first name basis, being the gentleman that he was. “If Prince Link is not hurting anyone, I don’t see the issue all these little people have.” Grabbing the last bit of his rock, the Goron ate it whole, swallowing as he took a breath. “Us Goron’s- we just treat everyone the same regardless of how they are. We’re l just large, walking rocks at the end of the day.”

Poking at her fish with a fork nervously for most the conversation, Mipha- the Zora Champion- finally had the courage to speak up. “I agree with Lady Urbosa and Master Daruk fully. I don’t see an issue with such frivolous concerns. The Zora are a bit like the Gerudo in that regard… it’s only Hylians travelers I have personally seen over the years who became uncomfortable when seeing just same sex couples back home- or Hylian men being intimidated by Gerudo.” After finishing her sentence, Mipha could see everyone was looking at her- besides Revali, they all seemed pleased at her response. “Prince Link is my good friend, and I would never judge him for being ‘different’. Not only that… I say he should get to decide his own path in life- and not be forced into the role of a King.” The last bit had less confidence than everything else- seemingly due to the nervousness Mipha had.

Revali rolled his eyes, sighing as he stood up. “Whatever, not like it’s that important anyways… I still say the boy is weak minded and willed. Now, if you will all excuse me, I have some of my own business to attend to.” Pushing his chair back in place, Revali swiftly left the hall, leaving the other three Champion’s alone.

“Well, that was a nice meal… I think I’m going to go find a nice patch of grass or rocks to sleep for the night.” Standing from the floor he sat on, Daruk stretched his back while brushing off whatever crumbs of his food remained in his beard. “Ladies.” He nodded in a form of saying goodbye, leaving the hall himself.

The two women being the only ones left, Mipha raised her hand slightly as if she wanted to say something, yet waited for Urbosa to notice. “Lady Urbosa, if I may have a word?”

“You know you can just call me Urbosa- were all equals in my eyes.” The Gerudo said with a comforting smile, folding her napkin neatly onto her dirty plate. “What’s on your mind?”

Mipha smiled nervously, still used to being so formal with everyone, even when told she did not need to at times. “Okay then, Urbosa... I was wondering if you would like to accompany me to see Prince Link if he is in his chambers?” Urbosa raised a brow at the suggestion, with the Zora noticing. “I just, um, think maybe we could just, see if he is present anywhere- see how he is feeling, and give him some comfort or support if he wants or needs any?”

Mipha seemed unsure of her idea after getting it out, yet Urbosa smiled. “You really are a sweet one. I’m sure he would like that- assuming he is open to such topics. Remember not to push or make him uncomfortable, as it is quite sensitive for many people.”

“Right, of course.” Nodded the Zora- the two now walking to Link’s chambers first- assuming it is where he would be at this hour of the evening. Sure enough, various guards were still on patrol in a number of hallways within the Castle, yet some were empty- including the all that lead to the Prince’s room- giving the women the privacy they desired as they knocked on the door. “Prince Link? Are you there?” Mipha called out, waiting for a response, finding only silence. “Link?” The Zora would always use both the Prince and Princess’ titles before addressing them in public settings. It was only in private where she would drop the formality, per both Royales requests- the same went for the Goron and Gerudo Champions.

Urbosa hummed, looking out one of the windows in the hallway, seeing a full moon already rising in the sky. “He probably is asleep, or maybe is just not here- around one of the training yards, perhaps?” Mipha shrugged, deciding maybe that was indeed the case… until they both heard something hitting the floor, and movement behind the door. Curious and worried, Mipha tried to open the door- and to her surprise, it was unlocked.

The two walked in, finding Link across the room standing from his desk facing them. What caught their attention, however, was that the Prince had a dress on- one incredibly like what Zelda would wear, if not just one of her dresses outright. It was the same royal blue with gold accents and white sleeves and silk- he even had the little circlet in his hair, although poorly. Link stared at them in complete fear frozen, appearing as if he were reaching for a dropped vial on the floor, which appeared to be nail polish.

“Please don’t tell my father.” The Prince whispered, tears slowly beginning to prickle in his eyes. He looked towards the floor, desperately trying to not meet their gazes.

Mipha and Urbosa were at a complete loss for words, both feeling responsible for what just happened. Wanting to salvage the situation, Mipha dragged Urbosa into the room, turned around to lock the door, then faced Link with a warm smile and comforting hum. The Prince was still in shock standing still, watching as the Zora Princess sat on his bedside, encouraging him to sit next to her silently, still giving her soft, comforting smile she always gave. Urbosa just stood there, not wanting to scare him anymore and let Mipha calm him down.

Slowly relaxing his body, Link let out a strained breath he did not realize he held in. “It’s okay, Pri- Link. I don’t judge you.” Mipha said, still smiling without any indication of deceit or judgement in her eyes. “You look really pretty.”

Going from pale and horrified, to flushed and embarrassed in an instant, Link felt as if a heavy metal shield lying across in his chest was lifted. “I do?” Receiving a nod and smile, he relaxed his body and wiped away some tears, coming to the realization he was safe and could trust her... after all, it was Mipha- how could he think she would react negatively? “The only other person who told me that was Zelda… when we were fourteen, she dared me to put on a dress, and I just…” Pausing, he took a deep breath, gripping the circlet as he sat there. “I liked it, and she encouraged me, so over time she gave me more to try on, and she would do my nails a few times. I was... trying to right now, but...” admitted the Hylian, who gestured towards the polish on the floor, “... I let my hair grow out as well. Zelda even brushed it for me a few times and fashioned it in a pretty manor… though Father seems to not like it, and I know many people have noticed. I must be abnormal.”

Mipha held in wanting to fawn over how adorable her friend was, hugging him tightly, being overjoyed. “Well, I think you look lovely. You shouldn’t be scared or ashamed for being how you are. It’s your life and body.”

Despite receiving some sense of comfort at her words, Link’s smile was quickly replaced with a frown. “But… my father and the whole Kingdom expect me to be a Prince- a King- and I’m like this. I can’t be this way. I need to be normal for everyone… but I can’t help it, it just hurts too much to hide how I feel.”

“You clearly never liked being one of royalty. It was always obvious with you growing up, and it still is evident now.” Urbosa spoke up after remaining silent, watching as Link was startled, seemingly having forgot she was present at all. “Trying to suppress how you feel and live how others expect you to will only will make you feel worse, child. While many simple-minded folks might take issue, just know none of them are worth an ounce of thought- only those who love and accept you.”

Link knew Urbosa always cared for him and Zelda- she was incredibly close with their mother, after all. He still was unsure how she would feel- initially he assumed she or any other woman would see him as some sort of freak or pervert, yet hearing all these comforting words was beyond reassuring. “I- I… th-thank you, Urbosa, Mipha.”

Urbosa had ran into plenty of people like Link around Hyrule- especially in Gerudo Town, so to her it was nothing out of the ordinary… except for the fact it was the Prince of Hyrule, which may be problematic due to most Hylians being very traditional- almost bafflingly so. She had to wonder- what would her dear friend have done seeing her son really be her daughter? She knew the late Queen wouldn’t have had an issue- in fact, she would have been supportive, but with her child being the Prince… I’ll do what I can to help your child… but it’s up to her, in the end. “You’re very welcome, little Vai.”

As the words ran through Link’s head, he quickly picked up on what Urbosa said- the Gerudo word for woman. She… called me a Vai? A Woman? The realization filled Link with an immense sense of euphoria, and it seemed to show on his face.

Despite not wanting to overwhelm or make Link uncomfortable, his reaction to being called a Vai, and how he liked to present made the Zora feel confident enough to ask. “So… you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to… but, do you want to be a girl instead of a boy, Link?”

Link turned to Mipha, blinking momentarily until the question finally registered- sending him out of his joyful daze and into damage control mode. “Huh?! I-” Pausing, he swallowed hard. “… I need to be a man and Prince.” Link simply stated.

Mipha rolled her eyes at the dodging, while Urbosa wasn’t surprised in the slightest. The Zora even went as far as to push it just a little more. “That was not the question- I asked, do you want to be a girl instead of a bo-” her mouth was covered by Link, silencing her question.

Do I… tell them how I feel? I know I can trust them… but if I say it… taking his hand off Mipha’s mouth, Link just sat on the bedside looking at the floor. “Sorry.”

Realizing she ended up getting far too pushy, and that Link probably still needed time to figure out his feelings, she backed up. “It’s okay! I apologize for asking such a sensitive question… gender is just an incredibly vast, flexible spectrum, and nowhere near as restrictive as society makes it seem. Just know we still love, accept, and support you, Link- however you are.”

Good save, comrade. Urbosa thought to herself, looking down at the dropped nail polish vial to pick it up. It was a royal blue, and upon examining Link’s hands, it was obvious he was struggling to do them neatly as smudges were all over his fingers. “Would you like for me to help give your nails a new paint over, little one? It seems you didn't fully clean your nails or push back your cuticles as well.”

Link calmed down again, completely in shock at the offer Urbosa was giving him. Looking down at them, even he couldn't feign ignorance over how messy his fingers became. He already became frustrated enough with trying to paint his nails neatly, and then he got scared and knocked over the vial of polish when they knocked. “... yes, I would like that, if that is, um, alright.”

“Oh! Can I help brush your hair as well? Even though Zora don’t have hair, I taught myself how to style it for people as a hobby.” Mipha asked, becoming excited at the thought of her and Urbosa pampering Link.

The Gerudo hummed, taking ahold of the Prince’s surprisingly small, delicate hands. “I can say you picked well on the color. The blue looks good on your hands, and matches your eyes.” The last part over his eyes made Link blush a little more, getting a chuckle out of Urbosa. “We could also do your makeup- keep it subtle to say, mascara and eyeliner. I can tell you more about other beauty tips, and Gerudo customs as well, ones usually not recorded in most the books in the Castle here.”

Link felt as if he was dreaming... yet, he wasn’t. It was real. She was about to be pampered by Mipha and Urbosa, who had no judgement on her being different. It was almost as if she felt... free in that moment, and it made her ecstatic. “Yes… yes please!”

-Castle Town, Central Hyrule, Hyrule-

-Medingo, 2:28pm, 12th of Satori, PE 10016-

A week had passed since that night, and Link was in high spirits for the most the week. Despite the many comments and stares he received over his long hair in a high pony tail, his blue nails, and even the subtle mascara he had put on (after multiple attempts), he tried his best to ignore it all. Today, thankfully, was a free day, which Link spent with Daruk- meaning lots of chatting and training- the two now within one of the many courtyards on the castle grounds. Even if they did not do much, just being around Daruk comforted Link greatly.

“I’m so tired from the sparing… I could fall asleep in the grass right now.” Said the Prince, who let himself fall face first into the ground, rolling over onto his back.

“But it was a good session! You did well and kept up.” Boomed the Goron, who sat down next to the little Hylian. “So, how have you been, little guy? It’s been a while since we’ve last spent time like this together!” Daruk asked, giving Link a hard pat on the back, knocking him forward a bit. It always stung a little, yet he never minded it as it was always in good faith. “Hope you’re holding up well, hmm?”

Link had a cheery smile as he looked up to Daruk, just happy he could speak to him again- someone he knew would not judge him. “I been okay… just been really busy: I’m just swamped with royal stuff… it gets tiresome fast.” Sighing, the Prince let himself fall onto his back against the grass yet again, without a care if he got his clothes or hairy dirty. “I just wish I could drop it all, you know? Just be… normal.” It’s not the first time Link has talked about this, generally being in self-defense or moping, but after what Urbosa said, Link felt he could be more honest in a more formal and constructed way… at least with those he trusted. “That and just… be myself, I guess.”

Daruk was surprised Link was bringing up some of this in a calm manor, but welcomed it nonetheless. “Aye, I can understand that… I just had been held up with stuff back in Goron City this week, and now meetings and tasks here yet again. Gets real boring after so long… I just wish I could lie atop a mountain- within a pile of rocks and just eat it all day.” Daruk dreamed out loud, letting himself roll onto his rock back, stretching out the most he could for a Goron. “Like… aside from political meetings or stuff me and the others must investigate with potential trouble that we’re suited to handle best, I prefer the simple things in life now- especially with the unification of Hyrule around… two decades ago? I forgot already.”

Link giggled at Daruk’s fantasy of rocks, along with seeing what he meant by a simple life. “Yeah, that would be nice… we are in a time of peace after all, though I guess we need to do our part to maintain it.” Link said, looking up towards the castle which was behind them from the position he was lying in. “It’s not that I take for granted what I have now, it’s just I wish I was more… independent, and could be my own person.”

“Oh absolutely… I completely get what you mean.” Daruk said as he tried to relate to Link a little more, taking notice of the skepticism on the child’s face. “Did you know I originally was meant to be the next Goron Elder when I grew up? Bloodline and such… though I didn’t want it, so I told them that. I just explored and became a warrior, and eventually a beacon for my people instead … besides, I don’t have the patience for being an Elder.”

Link looked up to Daruk in disbelief at the revelation. “Wait, really? You just… decided to live how you wanted, and your elders accepted it?”

Laughing nervously, Daruk rubbed the back of his head. “Well… they were less than pleased originally, but didn’t tell me no. I would have ignored them either way. I just didn’t want to do something I had no desire to do, not just because of personal feelings, but because if I had no drive for it, then I probably would have performed badly. When your father and his right-hand man came to the Elders seeking a great warrior of our people for work to serve and protect Hyrule as a whole, they mentioned me.” Sitting up, Daruk grinned down at the little Hylian. “I immediately joined up, and it was the greater purpose I wanted in my life… though I still miss the days I would bathe in rocks and consume them all, never feeling hungry once.”

Link was amazed that Daruk went against what was expected of him, and chose his own path… I wonder; can I do that to? Mid thought, food soon came to mind after Daruk mentioned it, feeling his mouth water. “Wow I could go for something right now- like that rock-roast… thanks for making me hungry.” Link jokingly complained with a giggle.

The two laughed as Link sat up and stretched his arms and back, letting out a relieved sigh, causing Daruk to notice Link’s stretched out arms… specifically his hands. Link did indeed have long nails, with a blue polish on them that matched the usual blue attire of the Royal Family. “Hey little guy… I got a question.” Link looked up to meet Daruk’s gaze, curious as to what he was about to ask. “I could not help but notice that blue stuff you got there on your nails; whatever humans call it… looks good!” Daruk said with a big smile.

Link quickly realized what he meant, becoming nervous. “Oh, um… thank you.”

Daruk’s smile vanished, worried he just made the Prince uncomfortable. “Oh, should I not have mentioned it? Sorry if it’s a bit sensitive, just I thought they looked nice and all.”

Recomposing himself, Link gave an uneasy smile. “Oh, you’re fine… I’m just not used to receiving compliments like that.” Link paused, unsure if he should continue… but he really wanted to. “Most people tell me I should not have it and cut my nails, and that my hair is too long and not fashioned properly for a man, or how some makeup on my face makes me look…” Realizing he was revisiting upsetting thoughts and insecurities- rambling about them even, the Prince shook his head. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to talk about that.”

Daruk tilted his head, able to tell Link was not used to openly talking about such things, and probably was just scared. “There something you got to ever get off your chest, just let me know okay little guy?” With a smile he gave Link a thumb up.

Link looked at him, then opting to look at the ground taking a deep breath. “Well… I guess there is one thing… well it’s complicated.”

Surprised at the continued openness, the Goron sat up as well. “What’s been eating away at you, little one?”

“Well… I guess I… feel different than compared to how I should feel.” Link lowered his head a bit more. “I don’t know how to explain, just… um… never mind.”

Giving Link a gentle pat on the back, Daruk gave him a supportive smile. “Hey, it’s okay if you struggle to get it out or are too nervous. I understand.” Daruk felt he caused this by complimenting Link’s nails, so he attempted to fix it best he could. “You know whatever anyone may say to you or think how you should act or be, you should ignore them- so long as you’re happy, who cares? Smash them all if they pick on you... assuming it’s not illegal.”

Link tried to smile, but kind of just drifted his attention away again. “Yeah, I guess.” There was a moment of silence between the two as they sat, the Hylian wanting to say more. Looking down at his nails, he had a little smile. “… Urbosa painted my nails a week ago, while both her and Mipha showed me how to do my hair better and small amounts of makeup.” There was another pause between the two. “It made me feel… happy? Free? Normal? I don't know... it was just nice.”

Daruk was surprised to hear such a thing, but was thrilled all the same to know this and see his smile. “That is great to hear! I’m glad you’re happy, little one!”

Blushing with a grin, Link beamed as his ears visibly twitched in excitement. “Thank you, Uncle Daruk.”

“No problem, little one.” After a few moments had passed, the other three Champions walked outside to greet them. Daruk struggled to stand up, but managed to greet them, causing everyone to chuckle as he nearly rolled over- even Revali.

Urbosa approached first, enjoying the fact Link had a smile on his face, something that she rarely saw- along with what seemed to be him keeping up with his makeup and hair. “Lovely day is it not? I tried to get your sister out here with us, but she’s stuck being a book worm… refusing to get out for some fresh air.” The Gerudo sighed.

Link giggled at the comment, already able to picture Zelda hunched over her desk taking down notes with a book in hand. “Yeah… that sounds like Zelda, she sometimes won’t eat if she’s too into her research or experiments. She went a whole day once without eating and I had to bring her food and even take her books from her!” Link exclaimed while him and the Champions laughed yet again, though the Rito rolled his eyes this time.

“Oh Link!” Mipha exclaimed walking over to Link and examining his face. “You been keeping up with the advice me and Urbosa gave you a week ago? You did a good job on your mascara and hair!”

Link blushed furiously as he was still unused to compliments. Having those he was close with being accepting of such things and even complimenting him openly on it was comforting. “Yeah, I have! I really like how my hair feels this way, and seeing myself in the mirror feels nice! My nails are still holding up to, see?”

Urbosa studied Link for a moment. His smile, outright bubbly mood, tone, body language... his entire demeanor.

He looked happy.

Comfortable, even.

By the Eight, I wish I could do more and take you away from this life, little Vai. I know your mother would be so happy to see you right now. The Gerudo thought to herself, worried over the pushback and hostility Link will eventually face. “You know, if I got you some Gerudo clothes, I can bring you to Gerudo Town, little Vai.” Urbosa offered.

When Link heard that, various images of different Gerudo attire flashed through his mind. Robes, veils, dresses, skirts, tops, sirwals, sandals, heels, slippers, and many more- all in various colors and styles...

He blushed furiously, excited over it. It seemed almost wrong... yet at the same time, he really wanted to accept the offer. Being called a Vai made his heart flutter with joy- bringing back the nagging thought in her head that maybe, just maybe, she was not actually a boy, but she was really a-

"Oh, for the love of... I thought you were supposed to be a Prince... not a Princess.” Revali interjected, getting everyone’s attention in the process. “Not some boy who likes to play dress up. What’re you going to do next? Cook and clean the kitchens? By all means- be a house wife instead of our future ruler.”

Everyone looked at Revali with disgust, while Link locked up, turning away to try and ignore the Rito. “No reason to be an arse, bird.” Urbosa said coldly. “Leave the child be, he is doing nothing wrong.”

“Hey, I’m only here because I wanted some fresh air as well, figuring you all could humor me, or maybe train a bit… but come on.” Revali doubled down, focusing his hawk like gaze onto Link. “What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue, Prince? Did I hurt your feelings? You’re supposed to become King and rule all of Hyrule, right?” Link kept looking away, struggling to keep a straight face, but Revali got in front of him, waving his wings around. “So, tell me, boy, do you like men to?”

It felt as if a switch in Link was flipped, as if every negative thought he had been burying resurfaced. Beginning to panic, the Prince did the only rational thing in his mind: flea. Not listening to his name being called, he began to run away, with Mipha following, all while Revali snorted.

“Well, guess I got that right, he does like men. Is he really meant to be future ruler and continue the Royal Family if he is not into wome-” Feeling his legs suddenly give out, Revali was now on his side, feeling pain in his beak as he looked up to find Urbosa struck him, standing over him with a death stare.

Urbosa scrunched her face in disgust, spitting at the ground the Rito lie on. “Pathetic- absolutely pathetic.” Was all she said, leaving the section of the courtyard with Daruk shaking his head, leaving Revali alone.

Link rushed all the way to his room, ignoring the stares guards or other staff of the castle gave him as tears threatened to fall. Finally making it to the only sanctuary of privacy he had, the Prince turned around to close his door... yet Mipha was right behind him, giving him a sympathetic look. Unable to hold it in anymore, he fell into the Zora’s arms while she hugged him tightly, all while he muffled as much of his cries as he could, but ultimately let it all out for a solid minute. “Why… why do people hate me?”

Mipha rubbed a hand through Link’s hair to comfort him. “No one hates you Link… it’s just Revali being inconsiderate-” She was cut off as Link raised his tear-filled gaze to stare directly at her. The pain in his eyes was enough to even shake her.

“It’s not just him, it’s everyone! Soldiers, some Knights, Nobles and Elders… regular people... they all call me ‘gay’, ‘fag’ ‘queer’, or the ‘heir to ruin the kingdom’… I’m just me… I’m just…” Link took a deep breath, struggling to hold it in as he choked it out. “I just don’t feel like a boy… I just am not what everyone wants me to be!”

Link cried more, pressing his face into Mipha’s chest as she held him for comfort for as long as he needed. Despite sitting there in his room not moving an inch, she forgot to close the door due to catching him from collapsing, and sure enough she turned her head to see Urbosa and Daruk outside the room having heard the heartbreaking words.

-Zora’s Domain, Lanayru, Hyrule-

-Faloraa, 6:04pm, 30th of Satori, PE 10016-

Link hated having to attend royal meetings of any kind- full of talks and older men he couldn't care less for, but this recent one was bearable. He was with his sister Zelda, naturally, and their father- King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule- along with the usual platoon of knights when the whole “Family” was going somewhere.

This time, thankfully, it was Zora’s Domain, as Rhoam was attending a meeting with King Dorephan, ruler of the Zora people over a small ‘feast’… and per usual, he wanted Link and Zelda to come along for experience, and to get them out of the Castle. Even he knew they both enjoyed Zora’s Domain immensely, and to get out occasionally.  Link had a strong affinity and love for the Zora, and many returned the sentiment back- mostly due to his royal status, sure, but many Zora appreciated how Link was, not striking them as how many expected a Hylian Prince to be. Being in Zora’s Domain was one of the rare occasion’s the Hylian Prince smiled and seemed genuinely happy and carefree.

While the twins had to sit through the meeting, it was with King Dorephan- while an old Zora, he was full of love and understanding for people, and he took a particular liking and care to Link and Zelda due to their close relationship with his own children, Mipha and Sidon. While he was not one to judge the customs of other cultures, he still had his own opinions he kept to himself, and after the many rumors he’s heard about the Hylian Prince- he certainly was concerned of the boy’s wellbeing, and made it a point to bring it up privately with his friend Rhoam after their meeting.

Aside from Dorephan and the many Zora Elders, there was his (youngest child) incredibly tall and handsome son, Prince Sidon- a beacon of joy, optimism and positivity for the Zora people who was incredibly outgoing- his signature grin soothed all who saw it. Link and Zelda naturally were no different to his charms- Sidon even on some occasions being extra friendly towards Zelda- as a form of respect for the Hylian Princess, of course, but Link sometimes became… jealous. It was not that he was interested in Sidon, per say- it was more so he wished he was seen as Zelda in those moments… but that did not mean him and Sidon didn’t get long. Despite the twins not being able to see the Zora Prince often, they still got along well- the sight alone brought joy to many Zora from seeing the Hylian Prince and Princess being close friends with their own Prince and Princess- though the royal children themselves never thought of it in that light often.

Once the meeting was over, Link and Sidon both looked at each other with goofy grins- scurrying off together to find an empty pool of water where many Zora would swim- both jumping in fully clothed without care. While Sidon only had some silver regalia and jewelry for a Zora- many of which would swim with theirs still worn- Link was human, wearing a basic cloth tunic and trousers, swimming in them without a care to what it would do to them… although he did take his boots off first, and any royal vest and apparel he worn for the meeting. The water was cool, refreshing, and importantly, fun for him, and unlike most Hylians, Link did not care to swim fully clothed- in fact, he preferred it over exposing his upper chest and body for that matter. “I’m glad that meeting is finally over, it was so boring… I almost fell asleep.” Link groaned, letting himself float onto his back as the water held him.

The Zora Prince laughed in response, doing the same as his Hylian friend by aimlessly floating without a care. “Oh, for sure… but the meetings are important for us to attend for learning after all, and any important things that might be going on!” While Sidon understood Link’s feelings on being of royalty and could sympathize with it, he himself was perfectly content with the life he was born into- but he could imagine Hylian people and Royalty were… more stressful and traditional. “Besides, we never get to see each other that often, so this gives us the perfect opportunity to catch up again! My older sister does always tell me how you’re doing though after she returns from visiting… which I must ask, how are you doing, my friend?” Sidon asked, flipping over to begin swimming around Link as he dwarfed the little Hylian in size.

Sure, he knew Sidon had a point, yet it still was not the life for him, wishing he could skip out on meetings all together. Pondering on what to say, however, Link was a little “stuck”- the last time he saw Mipha, he cried in private telling her he was not a boy… but that was not exactly something he could respond with. “Oh… I’m okay. Just life of a Prince, I guess. Same old same old.”

Sidon could tell the Hylian was lying- while not knowing any specifics as Mipha dared not spill such private information, he knew what she did tell him, along with all those nasty rumors of his dear friend. “You know you don't need to lie, my friend. I want to listen to how you feel, just like my sister… but if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine. I can understand the sensitivity of some topics.”

Link thought on Sidon’s words as he kept himself afloat- he knew he could trust Sidon, after all he was his best friend’s younger brother, and he himself was incredibly loyal… but what was bothering him was not normal. It was strange, and while Zelda, Mipha, Daruk and Urbosa seemed to be understanding with the little he shares, he still is scared to speak on it. “It's… weird. It’s not that I don’t trust you, I do, just… it’s sensitive for me, I guess.”

“Ah,” realizing it must have been quite personal for Link, Sidon felt some guilt on prying ever so slightly, “I’m sorry to of pushed the subject then, my friend. My apologies.”

“Oh, you don’t need to apologize, it’s fine… just…” multiple things bothered Link, for starters he knew he was uncomfortable with himself when he had to dress and present in a masculine manor, as he liked dressing and acting a bit feminine even… and he realized he liked other boys, and not girls, something he dare not say aloud as the Prince, “… sorry.”

“Oh no, don’t be! I’m the one who should be apologizing!” Sidon exclaimed, giving a smile with his pearly whites that did get a little giggle out of Link, but he still seemed off. “You know… I kind of have my own… thing, I guess. I have not really told anyone as well,” The Zora Prince started, “aside from my sister and father, of course.”

Blinking in response, Link turned in the water to face Sidon easier, noticing the Zora was no longer smiling- even a bit more hunched into the water, closer to Link. “Oh… I am open to listening, but I don’t want to force you to tell me, or if anyone might hear.”

Sidon smiled, yet seemed more serious than usual- a demeanor Link has never seen him wear. “No, it is quite alright- no one will hear, and if so, I don’t care all too much.” The Zora admitted, getting closer to Link- so much so the Hylian could feel the Zora’s breath on his face. “So, I myself have found in the past decade that, well, after many talks, I would need to marry a woman and continue the Royal Zora bloodline and such, kind of came to a realization over myself.” Sidon spoke calmly- the sentence alone already connecting various dots in the Hylians head. “I, well… am not really interested in women- I always found myself more enthralled with men, I guess. It is not unheard of among Zora, or really looked down on compared to Hylians, but… I’m the Prince, so it’s expected that-”

You too?” Link barely whispered out, feeling as if all the air in his lungs escaped him and he struggled to even stay afloat- Sidon likes guys too?! There's really someone else kind of like me? Its… not abnormal?

The Zora was taken by surprise at the Hylians response- excited even, to the point of grabbing Link’s arms to help him stay afloat, and out of pure joy. “Wait, you’re like me too, Link?!”

“I… well, in that way, yes, I am. I don’t… find myself attracted to girls like most guys my age.” Link mumbled, looking back down towards the water to avoid eye contact- not out of shame, but an odd, burning sense of embarrassment- or nervousness- spreading over his face and body. “But… I like guys instead. I have not told anyone, but… I sense Zelda, Mipha, Un- Daruk, Lady Urbosa and Revali know… minus the latter, they’re all accepting of it, and just, how I am…”

Sidon could tell there was more to Link than just his sexuality- possibly being on an identity level from what he’s heard, but that alone he was not the most knowledgeable on, or wanted to push out of Link if it was too personal to talk about. “Well, my dear friend, just know I’m honored you told me this, and I will keep this information private, okay? I also ask you do the same for me, but I might open up on myself publicly soon with my families support- just know that you have my full love and support!”

Feeling almost exhausted from that dump on both their parts, Link nodded. “Thank you, Sidon... and I promise I will.” With that, Sidon swam a bit from Link, his smile returning as he spun around in the water to relax more, while Link himself was still processing everything, opting to just calm his nerves- letting himself float onto his back again lazily, resting his eyes hoping there would be no more-

“Here you two are… Link, father wanted to know where you went!” Opening his eyes, Link turned his head to see Zelda was standing by the edge of the pool with her hands on her hips, raising a brow at her brother.

“Mhmmhmh,” the Hylian Prince responded, closing his eyes again in his relaxed state, having zero intentions of moving, “well, was it important? I don’t really want to get out of the relaxing water right now…”

As much as Zelda wanted to make sure Link was not scolded for ignoring their fathers’ summons, she also did not blame him, and rather him be relaxed- seeing him in total bliss in that moment certainly made her feel better- especially after everything he deals with. “No, he did not say it was… just that it was something he wanted to talk to you about privately when you could… so no rush. Besides I think he won’t be happy seeing you in wet clothes.” Zelda pointed out, with a giggle on her part. “He was looking for you after his one on one with King Dorephan, he seemed… calmer, yet tense?”

Link’s curiosity was now peaked, but if it was something that could wait, he certainly wanted to take his time- “How about you wind down and join us Zel.? The water feels greeeeeeaaat-” the Hylian Prince spoke, suddenly taking notice of a red fin emerging from the water, circling him.

Suddenly, a splash of water rose from the pool- with Sidon bursting out of the water, jumping towards Link with both his hands held out. “Shark attack!” Tackling the Hylian, the Zora pulled him into the water as he flailed around, electing a fit of laughs from Zelda. Emerging from bellow the depths of the pool, Link was coughing up water as he tried to catch his breath as Sidon emerged next to him giggling. “Sorry my friend, it was too tempting- wait are you okay? Was I too rough?” The Zora asked in concern, swimming closer to his Hylian friend.

Struggling to even catch his breath, Link kept coughing violently while trying to stay afloat, desperately trying to not get more water into his mouth or nose again. “Next time… give me more time to react so I can *cough* take a deep breath… breathing in water is anything but comfortable for me, you know.” After a few more coughs, Link finally opened his eyes- seeing Sidon was close yet again, with the Zora Prince’s breath and gaze from above falling against his face, causing the little Hylian to suddenly feel very warm in the water again.

“I’m very sorry Link, I did not realize you had little time to react… I hope I caused you little pain.” Sidon apologized, again becoming very close to Link right in that moment out of worry and guilt. “Do you need to get out? I can lift you up.”

“I mean, it’s probably is not as bad as the time I saved him from drowning.” Everyone turned their heads to the soft voice speaking out, seeing Mipha swimming over to them, greeting her warmly. “But please, do be careful with him, little brother. You know very well humans can’t breathe in water like us.”

The Hylian twins still found it adorable how despite Sidon’s massive size, he was the younger one… yet Link found it anything but once Sidon scooped him up bridal style without warning, carrying him to the edge of the pool to sit him down. “There you go, take a breather for a moment. Again, I apologize, Link.”

His Hylian friend was at a complete loss for words, all while Zelda and Mipha giggled at the display. Sidon himself seemed to catch on to the implication- being him and Link had just come out to each other, and here he was picking him up like one would their significant other, now feeling his own faint, blue blush spread across his face, while noticing the pink shade across Link’s- unless it were from him just choking on water moments ago.

Link, trying to calm his nerves and catch his breath finally, managed to collect his thoughts, breaking eye contact with his friend. “I um… thank you, Sidon.” He thanked timidly, feeling incredibly flustered. With that, Sidon smiled and dove right back into the water, noticing some Zora children nearby called him over as they struggled to swim, with Sidon going to the rescue- not like they would drown, yet he was still quite quick about it, beginning to assist the children with staying afloat. That is so adorable… not only is he charming, but he’s cute. Link thought, finding himself staring at Sidon play with the Zora children, laughing and yelling with them as they splashed in the water.

Mipha swam over to Link, placing her arms on the side of the pool. “So how have you been feeling Link?” The Hylian Prince was completely zoned out, staring at the Zora Prince in such a way that gave away his feelings. Mipha and Zelda both looked at each other, smiling as they knew exactly what was going through the boy’s head, finding it precious. “Liiiiiiiink?”

“Oh! Umm I’m fine… I’m good, yeah.” Link admitted, slowly starting to smile and ease. “I feel really good, actually.” Looking down to see Mipha, he noticed the smirk she was giving him. “What’s so funny?”

“We saw you ogling at Sidon just now, and how cute you looked when he picked you up.” Zelda teased, causing Link’s cheeks to burn as he saw she had the same smirk. “What? It’s adorable!”

Folding his arms and closing his eyes, the Prince tried his best to deny the observations. “... I don’t know what you're talking about. I was just shocked he picked me up was all…” his lie falling apart faster than he expected, Link opened his eyes while unfolding his arms, “… oh what the hell, you two already know I'm… different. I guess me being into guys instead is no surprise either.”

Approaching her brother, not caring too much for if her dress got wet, Zelda knelt next to him. “There’s nothing wrong with being how you are, Link.” Zelda said in a comforting manor, yet the Prince still seemed hesitant to listen. “I’ve done my homework- unlike most- and as far as I’m concerned, it’s a common thing. If anything, research shows that people who’re... like you, are incredibly unhappy if they try to suppress or deny their true feelings.” Link rolled his eyes, attempting to ignore Zelda further, who sighed. “Link... I don’t mean to make you uncomfortable, but you do know I worry for you? Those of us who care for and love you unconditionally will never have a problem with that.”

“She’s right, you know.” Looking back to his left, Link saw the soft smile Mipha gave him. “I know what other people might say or think scare you into suppressing any feelings, but none of them matter- only how you feel.” Mipha said gently.

Link let his hands fall onto his lap, looking back towards Sidon who was still playing with the Zora children, even looking back, smiling with a wave at them- even giving a wink. Can I… finally admit it? Taking a deep breath, Link closed his eyes, tilting his head downward. “… I…”

Maybe he could finally say what he has been feeling again. Zelda, Mipha, Sidon, Daruk and Urbosa all clearly knew it and were fine with how he was- maybe with all their vocal support he could do this- talk to his father right now even, just the friends besides him now.

“… I don’t feel like I’m a boy… or a Prince… I just think… maybe I’m a-” Mipha and Zelda scooted closer, gently taking ahold of Link’s arms while rubbing them to soothe the anxiety that he was certainly experiencing pushback from. “… I think I’m a-”

“A what, my son?” A familiar, deep voice called out. Freezing in fear, Link felt as if all the courage and hope he had suddenly begun to crack. Zelda and Mipha already turned around, with Link slowly doing the same- seeing not just his and Zelda’s Father King Rhoam, but King Dorephan as well.

Mipha and Zelda tried to speak up, starting some sentence Link did not even catch- even so, he stood up- still soaking wet and now shivering- and looked his father in the eyes “I don’t think I’m a boy, or a Prince, father.”

Rhoam was shocked, but remained calm, trying to not show his panic, however Dorephan could sense it easily, giving him that look after their private conversation. Instead of taking his Zora friends advice, however, the Hylian man went into full damage control as well- but not in the good way. “Link, I believe you’re just struggling with some emotions that are-”

“No!” Link interjected with a yell, looking down at the floor after seeing both the Hylian and Zora King’s shocked expressions- afraid of his own actions- or the various Zora and few Hylian soldiers whom probably heard and were now listening. “I don’t feel… like a man, or that I will ever be one. It just does not feel right to me.” Gulping, Link closed his eyes tightly. “I… I…” He wanted to say it, yet all confidence prior vanished.

“Link.” Rhoam said as gently as possible, yet the strain was noticeable, causing Link to flinch in fear. “You’re my son… my heir- I love you… but I think you need to grow a bit more- you’re still young and growing, so you might be able to move past this.” Rhoam said, feeling more disappointed with himself than his deceased wife or Dorephan probably were in this moment.

Link processed the words- now losing his composure as he began to shiver even more. “But why do I need to be what the world expects? Why is me being comfortable with myself a bad thing? Why is it bad for me to be this way?!” Link shouted, throwing all caution out the window- refusing to go back into the little closet she was forced into- refusing to only appear as how the Hylian people and her father expected. “Maybe I like my hair long and pretty, so what- yours and many other guys have it long- but mine is too ‘feminine’? Maybe I like more feminine things!” She pointed out, feeling as if her body was high on adrenaline and now planning to ride it out- regardless of how much Zelda, Mipha, and now Sidon were trying to calm her down.

“Link…”

“I still love sword fighting, but maybe I also like doing my nails and makeup because it makes me feel pretty, or dressing differently-” The the blue-eyed Princess admitted, feeling one step closer.

“Link.”

“Maybe I like dresses- does not mean I dislike being physically active or getting dirty- hell, maybe I like boys instead of girls-” She claimed in the excitement of her panic attack.

Link!

“I feel more like a girl than a boy, father!” The Princess yelled- feeling finally free… for only one second.

“LINK! ENOUGH!” Rhoam yelled, causing everyone nearby who heard flinch. “I will not hear any more of this, or let you embarrass yourself, your sister, me, or your mother’s legacy any longer.” Link went silent- all confidence becoming dust and exposed. “You’re a boy, you're my son, and you are to start acting like a Prince, or else I will get doctors to fix you… got it?” Link froze, shivering uncontrollably while staring at the ground to avoid all the eyes. The Hylian King looked over to his other child, giving her a glare. “Zelda, I know you’ve been enabling him, and I forbid it from happening anymore. Do it again, and I will make sure you two don’t interact- are we clear, both of you?”

“Your highness, if I may!” Mipha spoke up, standing up to approach the Hylian man. “Link is my friend… my best friend, and I think maybe what makes Link happy is for the best- spiritually and mentally.”

Dorephan- as much as he loved seeing his daughter stepping up for her friend, also wanted the topic to be discussed by the two Hylians in private calmly- which has completely gone out the window. “Mipha, I don’t think it is wise to get invol-”

“No, father!” The Zora Princess yelled, shocking not just everyone around her, but herself- being the quiet person she was known as, talking back to her father was something she’s never done. “I believe, if Link is old enough to have such responsibilities… then she should be allowed to decide her own life decisions.”

In truth, Rhoam was scared- he wanted his Kingdom to continue without him down the line, sure- but he also desired a good life for his children, and Link being something many Hylians rejected did little to convince him otherwise. Hyrule came first, and its royal families service came before their own desires- and Link’s job was to become King, marry a woman and father children to continue the line. Not having anything left to say, Rhoam simply walked away.

Link was scared, for a variety of reasons- from practically coming out to being told she is wrong- and that she’s a boy. She wanted to fight her thoughts and father back, she really did… but her anxiety got the best of her. Not paying attention to her surroundings or those calling her name or touching her, she wanted to just hide yet again from the world.

Maybe father is right… maybe that’s all I am. Maybe I am a freak that should be normal… be a boy- a man for the world.

Slowly returning to reality, the Prince blinked as he noticed King Dorephan seemingly chased after his father- not like he would be able to change his mind. Next to him was Zelda and Sidon trying ask if he was okay, and in front of him was Mipha appearing devastated, not saying a word. Even so, Link could not hear anyone- all he could hear was the same sentence on repeat he kept telling himself.

“I’m just a boy, guys. It’s fine. I’ll be King and make everyone happy.” The Prince muttered, noticing it silenced his three friends.

That night, Mipha sat underwater in her bed pool, staring at her ceiling through the surface of the water as she struggled to even sleep. Normally such a comfortable state would be more than enough to help her sleep- the sounds of the muffled water around her was calming, but no matter what, she was wide awake. Feeling ready to give up and try her waterbed, Mipha surfaced with a sigh, getting out of the small pool to dry herself- hearing a knock at the door in the process. Opening it, there was Sidon, crouching outside the small doorframe giving a weak smile. “Hello big sister… is it okay if I come in?”

Mipha smiled back with whatever strength she had left, letting him in. “Of course, baby brother. What’s on your mind?”

Sidon’s smile vanished once he studied Mipha’s own expression. “I, well… I can’t stop thinking about Link. I’m worried.” Sidon started, noticing the frown on his sister form. “You been thinking the same thing?”

“It’s why I can’t sleep, so yes.” Walking to her bed, Mipha sat down on it, along with Sidon sitting next to her. “I can’t believe Link’s father is so blind and… goddesses, I’m so mad and upset- I should have done more.”

Sidon let out a huff, placing his hand onto his sister’s shoulder. “Exactly… Link’s not hurting anyone, so I see no harm in it. Besides, there is nothing wrong with how Link feels!" The large Zora exclaimed, holding both his hands together briefly. “We… came out to each other earlier, and after what had happened… Link should be allowed to feel happy under his- her- their own skin, you know?”

Mipha noticed Sidon unsure on what pronoun to use, and in all honesty, she did not blame him- it was clear to them Link wanted to not be a boy- that much was obvious, and if Link saying it was not enough earlier, they wanted to be seen as a girl… until their spirits got crushed, retreating into their space with the mask for the world- Link even going so far as to cut the long length of their own hair when they got privacy. “I agree completely… the problem is, Zora culture and acceptance of these things is different from Hylian culture, and it does not help that Hylians are much more closed minded, and that Link is heir to the Throne, so they’re expected to father children and lead one day.”

“Wait… why can’t Zelda be heir- heir twins, so one is not a firstborn or anything!” Sidon asked, noticing Mipha just shook her head in response.

“Hylian boys have priority over girls for ruling, so if we were Hylians, you would be heir despite being younger because you’re male.” Mipha stated, feeling disgusted over such practices. “Such traditions are awful… and Link clearly does not want any part of it- yet none of us can do a thing to help.”

Sidon sighed, taking his older sister into a hug, whom reciprocated it back. “One day, sister… one day, maybe we can help.”

-Mabe Village, Central Hyrule, Hyrule-

- Tanagar, 7:37pm, 2nd of Jarrah, PE 10020-

Roughly Three years later, the twins now being the age of nineteen, life had changed drastically for the two of them. Zelda was now an official member of the Hyrulean council- consisting of various Hylian Elders and Nobles, with usually one or two Sheikah, Zora, Goron, Rito, and Gerudo… and naturally, herself, the King of Hyrule and his head of the council and right-hand man, the King of the Gerudo people. The New Year had also begun, marking many meetings since the festivities ended.

Aside from many political duties she had picked up, Zelda would hone her skills with a blade, wanting to have the know how to defend herself whenever the need arises. Technically, she already was training with a blade since childhood, yet it was mostly in free time or with Lady Urbosa, now being seen as not “not important” for her to know. Even so, Zelda still trained, even gaining the support of Urbosa’s husband- the Gerudo King who was not only raised by women, but some of the best warriors he has seen as well- who believed, the Princess deserved the right to learn how to fight as much as any man.

Then there was Link- non-stop studying and being groomed to become King- and most importantly, a King who was bigger and better than his father, carry the Royal Family bloodline on, and raise his own son to surpass him- all for the Kingdom…

… and he hated every moment of it.

Link, after the argument with his father three years prior, conformed to everything that pleased his father, becoming the son and Prince he expected him to be. From regularly cutting his hair if it ever got past his neck, trimming his nails constantly, and of course, presenting in a masculine fashion, Link would go through with it all. To those who were close with him, the sudden transformation from expressive, sensitive, effeminate, and full of life, to now stoic, numb, masculine, and calm was startling. Even to Revali, who, while preferring this more patient, level headed Prince, found him too now be “boring”. To those who loved Link dearly, it was heartbreaking due to how evident it was that he very much hated his life, yet he would never admit it or speak badly of it, sometimes the opposite in fact by claiming he was glad to be taking his responsibility as a Prince seriously now, even dismissing his previous feelings when asked.

Even though it has never been confirmed or was denied when asked, Zelda always suspected their father really followed up with his threat of “therapy”. All the symptoms of depression and denial Zelda read about years prior were evident in Link. Either that, or the threat of it was powerful enough to essentially have the same effect on him. Whatever the case, it broke her heart to see this happen.

On a chilly day in the new year during the month of Jarrah, Link and Zelda had a rare opportunity where they got to spend time together. The Prince could go out anywhere on his own without escort- assuming it was not too far from central Hyrule, and he had free time- and Zelda could travel as well, yet required an escort, which bothered her greatly. Thankfully, their father permitted Zelda to be escorted by only Link alone- after a year and a half of the initial threat of separating them. The two sat underneath a large pine tree atop a hill, far off from Castle Town, in-between Mabe Village, and Lon Lon Ranch. They looked towards the sunset as Link lowered his head, feeling his now medium length hair fall with gravity just above his neck, and his bangs and tendrils were quite grown again as well. The long strands in the back were neatly held in a band just above where his head and neck connected- giving a small pony tail.

Observing these details, Zelda very much noticed how relaxed Link seemed- a far cry from how he usually presented himself in recent years. Even so, that could very well be because they were alone outdoors, away from the Castle, or people, which was something she herself enjoyed, despite being a fleeting opportunity. “So, it’s been about a month since we last got to spend time together alone… I been so busy with political work recently I have not had time to even read for myself.” Letting out a huff, Zelda sat up straight and faced her brother, noticing him look back. “I have seen you participating in many of the council meetings as well… how’re you holding up, Link?” Zelda asked, hopping to strike up a conversation with her twin as they sat down about ten minutes ago in silence- not that she minded it, just she wanted to check in with him.

Staring at his sister, Link was thinking on how to respond- opting to turn his head back towards the Castle. “Okay.” Zelda raised her brows at the deadpanned response, realizing her brother had no plans to follow it up.

Okay Zelda, you can lead the conversation more in his favor without putting pressure on him. “That’s good! Maybe we can go to Goron City or Zora’s Domain next month- plan it ahead of time so we can see Daruk or Mipha. It’s been over a year since we last saw them.” The Princess suggested, giving her best smile and optimistic tone. Whenever the two got to spend time together in the past three years, not only was it rare, but Link was mostly silent, or would be dismissive of questions he was sensitive over. Knowing this, Zelda decided to sometimes go by his terms, and it sometimes worked- sometimes.

The blank expression Link held lit up- albeit briefly and slightly- to then return to how he was. “Maybe, though I have many responsibilities to still tend to- even if we did visit, it would have to be for diplomatic reasons on father’s behalf.”

Patience. “Well, while that is a good idea, there would always be a down time during those visits for recovering from the day to spend time with them on a personal level- like during meals.” Still, Link did not seem to budge at her suggestion, being a common outcome. “Actually, I believe we have not seen Urbosa in quite some time, either-” after mentioning the Gerudo’s name, Zelda noticed a slight tense in Link, possibly from thinking of the Gerudo as a whole, “- she would love to see us as well, along with her daughter Riju. I don’t think we seen her in about three years as well.”

The Gerudo- the race of women who were fierce warriors, and proud of their culture and freedom. Even now, Link still loved them- envied them, even, from their lifestyle, ideals, beauty… everything. Thinking about his admiration for them only bolstered old feelings that still popped up- old feelings that he suppressed for his own benefit, yet it never stopped him from hating his body, his appearance, his voice… his life he was born into. “Yeah, we have not seen her in a bit, either. I remember the one Gerudo woman on the council during the topic of me needing to court someone suggested I wed Riju.”

Zelda spun her head towards Link, shocked at the mere suggestion of such a thing. “Wh-what?! That is… surely her father was present for the meeting, right? Besides, she is over three years younger than us and is still a girl.”

“I agree… but sixteen is marrying age to Hylians and Gerudo, and she is nearing her sixteenth birthday, I believe- that, and I don’t have a choice in the matter.” Link said, being quite uncomfortable at the prospect of that being the social norm of their society. “The fact that father has not had me court someone in the past three years is relieving, though.”

He opened-up about something! Zelda thought excitedly to herself, trying to now push the last topic aside. “Honestly, I feel the same… he tried to have me meet some young noble men- some around our age… some a lot older.” The Princess shivered at the thought. “Thankfully, he seems to have realized arranging such things are not such a good idea… then again, maybe it was some of the older Hylians on the council who pushed him to try having me courted.”

Humming in agreement, Link pulled his legs closer towards his chest, holding onto them as he looked down towards the village some distance from them- with only a small grove of trees between them. “Hey, Zelda?”

“Yes, Link?” The Princess responded, swiftly devoting all her attention to her brother. Is he going to say something? He has the spark in his eyes- something is on his mind that he wants to say.

Whatever Link wanted to say was beginning to escape him- even if it was not due to his constant anxiety and fear of ever opening-up again- it certainly was because looking towards the village past all those trees, the Prince noticed something not normally there- Black Smoke. “Is… is that smoke?” Zelda took notice, finding that indeed there was smoke- and sure enough, the two heard faint sounds of yells. “What the heck is going on?” Link said, now getting to his feet beginning to rush through the trees between them and the village.

Without any warning, Zelda jumped up and followed closely behind, the both arriving to the village and finding it was a raid of Moblins and Bokoblins, with some buildings burning brightly. Whatever knights were stationed at the village must have been a small number, as none could be spotted- only simple town guards struggling to not become overwhelmed, and many civilians running for their lives.

Thankfully, one of the things in Link’s training to be the future ruler of Hyrule involved rigorous training in combat and various crisis situations like this, and immediately he went into auto pilot. “Zel! You focus on assisting townsfolk, I’ll take care of the Moblins!”

Agreeing without question, Zelda rushed to the people who were running or frozen in fear, instructing them to head to a nearby hill in the open towards the direction of Castle Town, and some able guards to stick with the townsfolk for defending, while some would follow her. Rushing towards various buildings, be them intact or burning, Zelda and the town guard with her searched them for possible survivors, with the Princess already finding a mother holding her child closely inside a burning building. “Everything will be okay, alright? Follow me.” She spoke in a soft, comforting voice with a gentle smile, already calming down the little girl being held, receiving a thankful nod in return.

Link rushed in, cutting down the Moblin and Bokoblins overwhelming the few soldiers who guarded the town. “Two of you with me- rest go with my sister and protect the townsfolk!” Wielding his royal broadsword firmly, the Prince dogged, parried and slayed multiple Bokoblins- hearing horns being blown as rushing in from behind some buildings were more red and blue Bokoblins, and the taller Moblins- all catching wind of the new threat. One Moblin tried to crush Link with its club- slamming the ground yet making no contact, instead finding a blade slice through its side, falling over.

Both Bokoblins and Moblins where monsters Link has fought before during expeditions with soldiers and his father, knowing their weaknesses and movement like the back of his hand- yet in the rhythm of fighting, something struck the Prince across the head, sending him onto the ground. Looking up, he saw a wooden boomerang next to him on the ground, and across from him was a green Lizalfos. Appearing to have been what threw the boomerang, Link stood up and was thankful the boomerang was wooden, or else it seriously would have injured him.

Noticing the two soldiers rush ahead towards the Lizalfos, Link tried to yell for them to get back- but it was two late as two more of the reptiles jumped from bushes- each landing onto the shoulders of the soldiers and mauling them as they panicked. “Idiots!”

Getting to his feet and even grabbing the boomerang that struck him, Link used the nearby fire of the burning building he was beside to light the boomerang on fire- throwing it towards group of three Lizalfos towering over the deceased Hylian soldiers. Sure enough, the flaming stick struck one, seemingly setting it on fire and sending it into a panic, while the other two noticed the Hylian, swiftly crawling over with the swords of the fallen soldier in their mouths. Despite the smarter and more deadly nature of Lizalfos, Link was just as experienced dealing with them- staying on the defense as he dodged or blocked their attacks- managing to slice off the toxic tongue of one that tried to jab him with it.

Meanwhile, Zelda managed to evacuate all the villagers while she and the soldiers and armed townsfolk dispatched the rest of the Bokoblins- Zelda herself taking down two Moblins. After assuring the area surrounding her and the civilians was secure, she began checking on each of the townsfolk to see if anyone was wounded. Aside from her usual royal duties, Zelda learned various first aide skills for whenever the need would arise- now being the time she would potentially have to put her skills to use.

Among her examinations, she heard multiple people cry for help, with the Princess finding among them was a child they evacuated that must have stayed silent about his wounds- now bleeding out from his abdomen. The sight nearly broke her, yet the Princess rushed to the boy’s side, requesting someone hold him gently and everyone else be on defense. The boy appeared to be hanging on by a thread, but Zelda was determined to save the child- using her supplies she always carried to clean out the deep cut in his abdomen; questioning to herself how it even went unnoticed.

“Everything will be okay little one, alright? It will all be okay.” Taking out an antibiotic she herself had concocted to perfection, Zelda prepared it over the child who was on the brink of tears. “This will sting, but please hold on for me, okay? I promise it will make you feel better.” The Princess spoke gently with a smile, finding it thankfully comforted the boy who nodded in response. Applying the necessary medications, the child’ whimpers were enough to normally break any person, yet Zelda kept herself together, now bandaging the wound.

After taking care of the Lizalfos and a few more Moblins, Link took a moment to catch his breath, realizing he pushed himself farther than he normally would. Examining his surroundings, all he could see was the destruction of the village, with only the fires being audible. Progressing to the other side of the village, Link noticed there was more dead Bokoblins, Moblins and Lizalfos- but among them was a single Knight- standing bloodied and exhausted, yet before him was another Lizalfos… or so what Link assumed- this one was much larger, having armor all over its body, while its head looked like an actual lizard opposed to the more deranged Lizalfos mostly seen. This one was not only tall, but had the body of a man, holding a buckler in its left hand, and a small, razor-sharp machete in its right hand- and without warning, jumped towards the limping Knight, slashing him across his already broken breastplate.

Without any more thought, Link rushed in with a swing towards it- missing as it jumped back with ease now fixated on him. Looking briefly besides him, the Knight was still conscious- yet greatly wounded, probably trying to hold off the beast before them while slaying multiple lesser ones in the process. Returning his gaze back towards the humanoid Lizalfos, Link approached it again to attack, finding the creature jumped over to his backside, slashing him across the back. Being he and Zelda only wore cloth, the cut from the barbed blade had no resistance, drawing a sharp cry from the Prince who stumbled forward, swiftly turning to face the foe.

Recomposing himself, Link looked up to see the Lizalfos was running towards him- swinging its blade towards his just as vulnerable chest. Reacting in time, Link side stepped the assault while trying to parry it, yet his right arm received a graze. Luckily for the Hylian, he was a lefty, but unlucky for him, this Lizalfos was much more smart, agile, and strong- much more than the small, hunched over animalistic ones commonly seen. This was something he never fought before.

Struggling on his defense and starting to doubt his ability to best the Lizalfos, it managed to land multiple strikes across his body and arms- jumping up to kick him into the chest with its clawed feet- sending the Prince onto his back. Opening his eyes from the impact, Link felt its foot stomping onto his chest hard, screeching into his face as the monster bare its fangs, saliva, tongue, and breath onto the Hylian's face.

For the first time in three years, Link had felt an emotion he had forgotten- fear; watching as the Lizalfos was about to drive its weapon down into his face…

... but something made it stop.

The creature seemed to recoil, covering its face with its sword arm- a golden light shined brightly which had scared it. The source was Link’s his left hand.

Not wasting any more time to question it, the Hylian used the opportunity to grab his sword beside him, using all his might to swing the blade right into the reptile’s lower half, causing it to stagger back a few feet. For some reason, the Prince felt a rush of energy, prompting him to get back onto his feet, as all the pain and bleeding became numb. “Come here you big, green scaly bastard!” Link yelled at the vile monster, finding the Lizalfos screech in response, launching itself towards him- however this time, the Prince managed to side step it, and with a swift swing, he shattered its frail armor with a single swing. The Lizalfos jumped away from Link, who was now on the offensive- clashing with it a few more times repeatedly- when finally- he parried its blade, slashed it across the torso and sent it onto its back exhausted, giving Link the opportunity to jump towards it- driving his sword into its chest.

The Goddesses must have blessed Link in that moment as the creature let out a weak sound before going limp, and it’s grasp on its blade loosening. Taking a deep breath, Link blinked as he stood over the beast’s corpse, pulled his blade out of its chest, watching its blue blood forum underneath it.

Exhaustion finally setting in, Link sheathed his blade without care of the amount of differing monster blood’s coated on it, turning his attention to the wounded Knight. “Sir, are you okay?!” Link asked, rushing to the man’s side, yet found he was unresponsive, and upon checking his pulse, it was clear he succumbed to his wounds.

I should have been here sooner.

After searching for anymore possible signs of monsters being around, Link decided he should look for the rest of the survivors and Zelda, finding them safe and sound nearby. When Link approached, however, not only did the crowd cheer, but they ended up calling him the “Hero Prince”- a gesture that was in good faith, but made him feel more disgusting than anything.

The Knight and Soldiers here are the actual Hero’s- they always risk their life fighting, while I swooped in and cleaned up the mess. There’s nothing Heroic about that.

Ignoring the villagers, Link turned his gaze to Zelda, finding her attention was fixed onto a child she was tending to. What stuck out to the Prince was a mark on the back of the Princess’s right hand- three triangles, with the bottom left consisting of a light gold color on her skin, and the rest a darker shade of her normal skin. It was the crest of the royal family: the holy power they read so much about as children. There was a faint gold light coming from her hand over the child’s abdomen- specifically how the bandage was bloody and soaked, unable to stay put… yet as the child himself removed it, there only a faded scar present- as if it was healed for months.

Seemingly, Zelda was blessed by the goddesses while saving this child’s life- giving her the power to stop the bleeding. The boy jumped up to hug the stunned Princess as the townsfolk and remaining soldiers cheered “Hylia Reborn!”, bowing in the process.

“Z-Zelda? Are you…” Link began, about to place his left hand onto his sister’s shoulder, yet noticed on his dominant hand as well lay the same exact crest- with the right triangle being the golden- “What?

Zelda came back to reality, looking over his hand completely dumbfounded, noticing the townsfolk seemed to catch on- now cheering even more. “The Hero of Courage and Hylia Reborn have returned in our time!”

Hours later, the refugees were escorted to Castle Town by the remaining soldiers and royal twins. One the twins could relax for a moment, Zelda immediately forced Link into getting his wounds tended. An infirmary within Castle Town was their quickest option, and upon entering one, the clerks at the front desk were rather easy-going... until realizing who they were. Despite Zelda’s insistence on wanting to pay, the doctor who would tend to them refused and took them in immediately. The worst thing they had to worry about was an infection, but after cleaning the lacerations and bandaging them, Link was going to be fine. The deep one across his back, however, would be a permanent scar, going from his top right shoulder blade to his left waist.

At this point, Link felt detached enough from his own body that he couldn’t bring himself to care. All he could react with upon being told was giving a shrug, all of which Zelda closely watched.

When the royal twins were discharged and begun walking through Castle Town- despite now being the evening- it was hectic as people had heard what happened, along with the holy crest being visible on the back of their hands. Naturally, people had questions as to what it meant, while many were just shouting and cheering… others, however, saw it as the end times and an omen, and sure enough, that was the sentiment that filled both Link and Zelda’s heads as they returned home to the Castle.

Not even being fully across the second moat, Royal Guard- the highest rank of knights- were requesting the Prince and Princess be escorted by them to the throne room to meet with their father and other councilors. Technically, Link and Zelda could send them away, as the guards served the Royal Family. If it’s their father instructing the Royal Guard, however, it was more likely they wouldn’t budge on a no, depending on the situation or command.

Entering the large room that both the twins had grown to detest, they stood before their father King Rhoam, while various councilors stood a bit to the side- not too close, but close enough to communicate with him- all while having not just a dozen Knights present, but four Royal Guards as well. “My children… my beautiful children, you two are here before me not because you courageously rescued the surviving people of Mabe Village, but because you have selflessly showed your will to protect and uphold peace, and in turn, gained the attention of the Ancient Goddess.”

The twins looked at the holy marks on the back of their hands. Two triangles side by side, with a third one atop of them. On Link’s hand, the bottom right triangle was a dim golden hue, with the rest being just a darker tone of his skin. For Zelda, it was the bottom left triangle that was golden.

Ancient Legends and fairy tales tell of the Insignia of the Royal Family being more than just a symbol. It’s true meaning, purpose, and name have been lost to time and recorded history long ago, but it’s become known as the Prime Energy. Each Triangle has a virtue association with it, according to documentation, and often, the Prime Energy would split into three separate pieces. The virtues associated with each one would be attached to other legends have still stood the test of time.

Legends tell of the Goddess Hylia herself having herself be reborn a mortal to use the Prime Energy with another. The details are unclear to this very day, and highly debated, but there are two scholars have settled on that are the most known.

Hylia founded the Royal Family with her Chosen Hero and their descendants are the Royal Family of today. What is debated, however, is if those chosen to inherit Hylia’s powers are just descendants, and nothing more... or, that person really is an incarnation of the Goddess yet again. Evidence that supports the latter is that only Daughters of the Royal Family have been known to have the same powers and insights as Hylia... yet, it could be a coincidence. Despite this, the past Princesses who have been chosen always could control power that would be used to defend the people from evils unknown, and were known to be the wisest of all in their time. With this, the 'Divine Priestess' has been commonly associated with the Virtue of Wisdom, leading to her bearing that piece of the Prime Energy.

Next are the legends that tell of a Hero of would appear over and over, embodying the Spirit of past Heroes. According to recorded history, the original Hero was chosen by Hylia, and his Spirit would return with the Goddesses mortal incarnation, thus founding the Royal Family. While the details of their past exploits and tales are unknown, it is commonly believed that the Hero would often wield a divine weapon. A Sword that was said to be from the Goddess herself, and was meant to fend off evil. The Spirit of the Hero was said to embody the Virtue of Courage, thus leading to many historians finding that the Hero could possess that piece of the Prime Energy.

Everyone in Hyrule knew these tales. They were as time itself... and Link and Zelda knew them, having grown up reading all about their history.

“You two have been marked by the Goddess with the Prime Energy. My daughter Zelda: the mortal reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia herself, and Virtue Wisdom. My son Link: bearing the Spirit of the Hero, and Virtue of Courage.”

A… Hero? What? I’m no Hero! “… I’m sorry father, but I don’t see how this makes me a Hero.” Link rebutted, in disbelief of his sudden title. “Many civilians, soldiers, and knights still died, and I just happened to be nearby and help.” The Prince spoke out, noticing the stares of various knights present fall onto him. “They’re the ones who died protecting the innocent, the ones who always put their life on the line.”

Everyone then looked to King Rhoam, who appeared to be smiling. “Yes, those honorable soldiers and knights will never be forgotten for their valor and bravery, nor those who could not protect themselves…” standing from his throne, Rhoam began walking down the stairs to face his children, “… however, you and your sister being there was not only a blessing from the Goddess, but her test, marking you as a Hero; the Hero of our time, and Zelda as the mortal reincarnation of Hylia. According to historical documents, such a thing has not happened in millenniums... something none of us would have ever imagined happening in our lifetimes.”

Now face to face with his children, they could see their fathers smile was no longer present, leading to the part they both knew was coming...

The part that is also associated with tales of the Hero and Goddess. The Evil they would have to repel time and time again.

Rhoam no longer seemed... happy. “Because of your identities being revealed, this can only mean one thing... the same thing that has always happened. A great evil is approaching our Kingdom. Going off historical evidence, you two will have to follow in your previous incarnation's steps,” facing Link, Rhoam placed his hand onto his son’s shoulder, gripping it gently, “the Great Forest to the north east. Scholars have never been able to traverse it for thousands of years, all who entered it never returned… yet all documentation point towards it containing the Legendary Sword that Seals the Darkness. The blade created by the ancient goddesses themselves that only one with the Spirit of the Hero may wield to smite evil… and that person is you, Link.”

I... what? I’m just the reincarnation of all those past Hero’s in all the stories? No that- I’m my own person... I’m... who even am I, anymore?

Link stood there, frozen in fear from his thoughts while staring blankly at his father, no longer paying attention as the King moved to Zelda. “It is said that all of Hylias incarnations could harness several powers she possessed when she walked the world as a goddess, utilizing her powers to assist the Hero of Courage in banishing whatever dark evil they faced. Zelda, you will head to the three Holy Springs of the goddesses to devote your time to training, awakening your powers to aid your brother in whatever this evil may be. You both will prepare yourselves for whatever evil- be it man or monster- arrives in our Kingdom, and embark on your paths. We must be ahead of whatever threatens Hyrule, and you two holding the Prime Energy will thus be at the forefront.”

More silence filled the room, as the Prince and Princess processed everything that was just dumped onto them. They had become busy enough as is in recent years, having to sacrifice most of their own personal life and desires for the Kingdom they only existed to serve, but now, any small possibility of having a peaceful life were snuffed out. They now had an even greater responsibility to fulfill for this land, not by blood... but by divine fate. “Father” Zelda spoke to break the silence. “I will do what I can to ensure the prosperity and safety of our kingdom continues.”

King Rhoam nodded, moving his gaze to Link, who stared blankly into nothing. “Link… are you committed to what is to come? You know what you must do?”

Link looked back up towards his father, seeing the great worry that filled his face- Rhoam knew he was clearly not well, yet he also knew the response his father wanted. “Yes.” The Prince spoke, nothing more being elaborated further.

King Rhoam knew what was going on with Link, as he knew his child was more and more quiet and less expressive as time went on ever since his rejection of his son’s desire. He was worried, he knew he had to check on his son’s wellbeing for being too hard on him… but the priority of the Kingdom came first, and Link should understand that as well. “Very well, you two are excused for the evening. I shall immediately write for our allies’ leaders to send the Champions and prepare themselves as well, and for all potential leads we have to whom or what this evil is, be a returning force, or something else.”

With nothing else to add or wanting to stand around, Link left immediately, dragging his feet to his room as all the Knights within the halls he walked past stared at him- even if they did not hear the meeting, they knew- everyone in Hyrule knew the legends that the Crest of the Royal Family was based on, and the Chosen ones... and here was the Prince of Hyrule walking right by them, bearing the crest of a chosen one.

What are they thinking? Link thought as he tried to ignore the stares. Do they look down on me still like the failure I am?

Locking himself into his room, Link stood in the center of it for a moment, letting everything that had happen finally register with his body- sending him into a violently fit of tears he was trying to suppress.

I’m crying? I have not cried in three years- why am I crying? I can’t be doing that-

*knock knock*

“Link, are you there?” Zelda spoke out, sounding as if she tried to hide her concern in her voice.

“I-I’m fin-ne”

“You don’t sound fine-”

“I SA-AID I’M FIN-NE-”

Despite Link's claims, Zelda could hear muffled sobs coming from behind the door, prompting her to attempt opening the door, yet it was locked. Swiftly, Zelda pulled out one the few pins in her hair to use as a lock pick, an old trick she did in her teens to access the library at night without being noticed. Entering the room, she found Link sitting on his bed in a ball with his knees to his chest, trying to suppress his crying as much as he could. I haven’t seen him shed tears in the past two years... locking the door, Zelda sat onto the bed and wrapped her arms around Link tightly. “Shh, it’s okay... let it out, Link.

On command, Link stopped holding back as all the demons he held in, be it all the built-up dread he held for nearly a decade, being rejected his identity that he's tried to suppress, the past three years of hell he doesn't want to remember... and now a divine responsibility thrown atop everything else.

It all poured out after so long. Holding onto Zelda tightly, he refused to let go as he shook violently, feeling utterly drained and pained. Slowly, the crying died down after minutes on end, finally reaching a calmed state as only sniffles escaped him.

Giving her brother as much warmth and love as she could, Zelda comforted Link for as long as he needed, until he fell asleep in her arms. Giving the Princess the opportunity, she set Link down into his bed, tucking him in to be comfortable, looking him over once more time.

He looks so calm now… I hope he will find inner peace- even with this new challenge thrown at us.

Looking at Link's left hand, Zelda could still see the Crest of the Prime Energy on the back of it. The mark of Courage was a dim gold.

I might be better at keeping myself together and level headed, but...

Next, Zelda looked at the back of her right hand, the mark of Wisdom was the filled one.

... even I have my doubts, and must ask... is this a divine prank? Punishment? Am I really "Hylia Reborn" like all the history books claim?

Standing up, the Princess walked towards the door to leave, yet rested her hand just above the door knob.

I don’t believe it. Maybe it happened once, tens of thousands of years ago... but I don’t buy it one bit. We may have Hylia’s blood, but I’m not her- I refuse it. I’m Zelda- a Scholar.

...

The sun shined through the curtains, landing onto Link’s eyes. Despite being closed, it seemed to make him to stir in his sleep- rolling over and hugging a pillow tightly as he slowly began to open his eyes, finding everything was blurry as usual. Letting out a low, displeased moan, Link rubbed his eyes of dried tears, blinking a few times to adjust his vision to the waking world, lying there in the comfort of his bed, feeling so relaxed and calm. Resting on his right side, Link moved his left arm from the pillow he held to get a better grip, noticing the crest on his left hand- the events of the afternoon and evening prior flooded back into his mind. Now being full of dread, Link sat up and recalled his last memory was of breaking into his room (not being the first time), finding him crying, so he assumes he must of fell asleep and Zelda tucked him into bed like a child. Looking around his room, the Prince noticed there was something new- a neatly folded pile of clothing on his bedside. He crawled over to it, finding a note:

“Wear Me.

Of course, it must have been Zelda. Link was about to throw it into his drawer and put on his usual royal attire... but had a spark of curiosity when realizing what one of the garments was- a tunic.

Grabbing ahold of the tunic, it was blue- the same shade of blue the Champions had on some of their royal attire. It was a short-sleeved tunic, and to go underneath it was a long-sleeved beige undershirt. Without delay, Link took off all his dirty clothing from the night prior, deciding to wash himself in his bathroom he had to himself- drying off swiftly as he began to dress, pulling the shirt over his head, finding the neckline exposed his collar bone and ever so bit underneath it.

Next was a pair of beige trousers, feeling soft to the touch, and upon pulling them up, Link found they were quite comfortable. The upper part being slightly baggy, but form fitting, while still giving breathable room. Next was the tunic- the sensation of sliding it over his head felt so nostalgic: a fond sensation he has not felt in a few years, finding the tunic hung over his thighs- arguably a bit short compared to what he would normally have to wear and it would have raised a red flag with his father… yet, for the first time in three years, Link no longer cared- he just wanted to continue, not caring what anyone thought- he was alone in his room after all. Securing his belt around his lower waist per usual, yet when he faced his mirror, he felt it made him look… like a square. Feeling a sudden urge, Link pulled the belt up more to go above where his pants reached- above his navel, tightening the belt more, then looked back towards the mirror.

Surprising himself, Link found his figure looked… pleasantly small? Not masculine? At least, going off how he felt when compared to just having his belt at his hips usually. The feeling of seeing himself in this light brought a smile to his face- a smile that was not forced for the first time in ages. Looking closer, there was what look liked the white outline of a sword on the chest of the tunic, apparently a design choice to represent that Legendary Sword he was to now wield… or maybe his general love for swords (he hoped).

Next was a new pair of brown boots, and swiftly Link pulled them on, falling in love with how they felt and looked: feeling sturdy and of high quality- being much longer than any boot he has worn before- like the ones Zelda would wear when they were traveling. Next was a pair of fingerless gloves, arm bands with reddish and yellow streaks, and a bracer for his left wrist. While not the biggest fan of gloves, and wanting to leave the accessories off, it was a gift from Zelda, so Link felt he should try them at least. Finding his Royal engraved broadsword sheathed on a desk in his room, Link held it and found it was spotless- Zelda’s doing again, huh? Strapping it across his torso so it rested against his back, he faced the mirror again.

Link felt he looked- dare he say it- nice for once, like an adventurer almost, or a simple traveler. His hair was currently medium length, his bangs hanging out above his face per usual, his tendrils hanging by the sides of his face, and the rest of it behind his head- reaching his neck. The Prince knew his father would take notice and point out he should cut it per usual, yet just like with his new outfit, Link had decided against it- deciding to tie the back of his hair into a small ponytail to keep it neater- while having it higher up like Mipha had shown him years prior to give it more “flair”. One more time, Link looked at his reflection… and he liked it, smiling uncontrollably.

It felt… weird. It felt almost wrong, like he’d get in trouble-

“Do you like it?” Startled, Link jumped an inch in shock, turning to the side to see Zelda in his bedroom doorway holding a hairpin, seemingly have broken in yet again after hearing the click of his boots against the floor. The Princess herself was wearing her usual light blue travel attire and black leggings and boots, with her rapier sheathed at her hip. “I finished it last night after you fell asleep. The tunic was an old project of mine I never had the time to finish, but last night seemed like a good time as any. It was always meant to be a royal garment of some kind- like what the Champions have, but I wanted it to be something you liked… I tried to get it to be close to your size.” Zelda said looking down to a folded, dark, navy-blue cloth she held. “Also, this was another piece I was working on for you for even longer. It’s just a simple hooded cloak… I couldn't get to it last night, so I spent most the morning finishing it up.”

Link was at awe at how smooth, long, and sturdy the cloak felt in his hands, swinging it around to fasten around his neck, even pulling the hood down for a moment. He found he was enjoying the feeling of the hood around his head, and the cloak draping against his back and feet. “I like this… all of it so much. Thank you, Zelda.” Link said tugging at the sides a bit with an adorable smile, flinging the hood back to let his hair breathe for now so could hug Zelda tightly.

“You’re very welcome, Link. You look great… you look happy, even.” The last comment caught the Prince off guard, feeling familiar warmth in his face… and joy, an emotion being long overdue.

The twins prepared themselves for the rest of morning and early noon, now making their way to meet with their father in the throne room before leaving. King Rhoam upon welcoming them noticed Link, eying him from head to toe- with many Knights doing the same. “Link… what are you wearing?”

“It's clothing I made for Link, like what mother had made for the Champions years ago when they were gathered to stomp out traitors to Hyrule. Do you not see the resemblance, father?” Zelda chimed in, doing her best to sell the idea to their father.

King Rhoam was impressed- skeptical, but impressed. Some things with the outfit he was not too much a fan of, and some knights and Hylian council men were murmuring things, particularly about Link appearing so fragile and small, how his belt was fashioned as if trying to accent his form more, and then the taller boots and growing hair.

Even so… Link seemed different than before- almost like he had a subtle glow up- not bubbly by any means, but he seemed like he carried himself with much more vigor, something Rhoam has not seen in the past three years, and it relieved him greatly. “Very well… are you prepared as well, Link?” The Prince nodded while staring his father in the eyes, who was surprised at a fire that seemed to burn behind them- filling him with confidence he has not felt in so long. “What about you, Zelda? On your word, the royal guard will escort you to each Holy Spring of the Goddesses.” Rhoam asked after turning to face his daughter.

Instead of saying she was ready to depart, however, something else came out. “If you would allow it father, I would be more comfortable if I went with Link to the Great Forest to help claim the Legendary Blade-” Zelda stuttered for a moment, taking a breath, “-and then he can escort me as my personal guard to the springs, where he can train on the road. We are going off old legends that have not occurred in millenniums, so some caution on our part would be wise so we're prepared.”

Zelda audibly swallowed the lump in her throat; Link could tell she tried her best to avoid calling him “he” … but why? It is what he was… yet he was glad she tried to avoid it, and in all honesty, for the first time in a long while he did not feel like he was presenting as one almost, and it made him happy.

Rhoam thought for a moment, agreeing that the two embarking on the journey together seemed like it would be safer. “I will allow it. Embark when you two are ready, and for the love of Hylia, please stay safe and return as soon as you two complete your tasks.”

Now outside of the Castle grounds, the twins rode their horses towards the eastern side of Castle Town to hopefully garner less attention- with Link now keeping the hood up. While many seemed to realize it was the Prince and Princess, bowing before them and praising them as “Hylia” and “Hero” much to their dismay, one old lady seemed to have not recognized them, looking up at them with a smile saying “Good afternoon, ladies”, which made Link blush furiously at how good it made him feel- with Zelda taking notice and finding it adorable. The rest of the ride was uneventful- with the usual banter on the streets that Link and Zelda where the chosen ones, that the end times were near, and some bards were even singing songs about how they will protect the land… all while the twins tried to ignore it the best they could while keeping their heads down.

Now nighttime, they and their horses needed to rest, having set up a camp outside the Great Forest. Zelda sat reading a book about the ones chosen by the Goddess(es) along with some others she brought that may help with their journey, while Link was keeping watch with his sword out for a solid fifteen minutes. “Link… you know you don’t have to be so on edge. Staying awake to guard is one thing but you’re so tense… relax.” Zelda chimed.

Rolling his eyes, Link sat down next to his twin, relaxing his muscles as he sheathed his sword and undid the belt, placing the sheathed blade next to him. “Okay, I just want to make sure we’re safe and don’t get jumped by anything.” Grabbing their pack, Link pulled out an apple and took a bite, looking over at the book Zelda was reading. “What’re you reading Zel?” The question earned him a stare, with a faint smile on his sister’s face. “Why are you staring at me like that?”

Zelda giggled at his obliviousness and liveliness. “I haven’t seen you this talkative, or heard you call me Zel in years, Link. I just am… happy to see you full of life again.”

Link stared at her, then the fire they sat by. “Well… ever since that argument with father three years ago and what he… well, I’ve been too scared to be myself.” He stopped for a moment, looking down at his outfit, trying to not think of the thoughts while gripping his tunic. “I guess I gave up on ever being comfy with myself, feeling it was best I be how the world wanted me to be.” Pausing for a moment, Link shivered in discomfort. “It has been… torture for me.”

Zelda leaned back as she closed her book, facing her brother. “I knew trying to live how father wanted was painful for you, and I tried to get through to you for so long- me and the Champions.” Scooting closer to Link, she gave a gentle smile. “I am beyond relieved to finally see you opening up again after so long- let alone talking about how you’ve felt the past three years… my question is, what kept you going?”

Thinking on the question, Link looked up into the deep dark blue nighttime sky illuminated by the stars and moon. “I don’t know… I guess some form of duty or responsibility. Like, the right thing for the world, I guess- like not only what I wanted and felt was wrong, but that it was not good for Hyrule.”

Zelda hummed at his words, seeing that Link really did have a sense of responsibility… but it somehow got twisted into making his suffering be vital for the world to be happy. “So, you will just be a Prince and man because the world told you to, regardless of what you want?”

Link sighed, turning his gaze down, yet away from Zelda. “I mean… I don’t see what I can do, as I’m next in line, and only first-born males can take the throne, or a male of twins… unless…” Link thought, having some old dark feelings and thoughts creep back into his mind- ones he had entertained and nearly acted on for the past three years, yet still held out the entire time. “… unless I were to just disappear-”

“No. Don’t even think about it.” Zelda said sternly, obviously knowing what Link was referring to, and she was not having any of it. Scooting closer, she hugged him without warning. “Don’t suggest something like that, please.”

Link looked down at Zelda as she hugged him, feeling immense guilt surge through his head. “I’m sorry, I just-… I occasionally would have thoughts like that, and it’s hard not to think of them-” Without warning, the hug tightened.

“Don’t you ever hurt yourself, please Link- I cannot bear the thought.” Zelda said pressing her face into Link’s chest, hugging him ever so tighter after every second. “That is not the answer, okay? That is a permanent thing to a temporary problem. I would be devastated if you ever did something like that- Mipha, Sidon, Daruk, Urbosa- even Father- would all be heartbroken.”

Link looked down at his sister with a shocked expression- feeling as even more guilt filled him, hugging her back. “I’m sorry, I… I won’t ever do anything like that, I promise.” The two separated and sat in silence for a moment as Link contemplated another thought. “What if… after we took care of this Goddesses stuff, I just… left one day, and never came back?” Zelda looked at Link, yet did not interject. “What if I just left and went into the world to live as myself and dress and present how I want, to the point no one would recognize me as the Prince, but as…” Link wanted to finish his last thought, but he couldn’t finish it, feeling a sense of dread pull him back- being too afraid to let her exist. “Silly thought. Forget I said anything.”

Zelda thought for a moment, but let it go; not wanting to ask any questions that might discomfort Link. “Alright if you insist…” She started to get ready for sleep, placing her book back into her pack and getting into a comfortable position. “… If you ever did leave for whatever reason, I would miss you dearly, you know.”

Link was taken aback, feeling guiltier. He tried to say something, but felt nothing would really help, so he just turned over onto his side to get comfortable. “I’m going to hit the hay… night’ Zel.”

Zelda sighed at his response, getting herself comfortable as well. “Good night, Link.” The twins slowly drifted to sleep next to their sleeping horses and burnt-out fire, with nothing but the woods nearby and the sounds of bugs and animals in the distance keeping them company, under the night sky with stars.

Right above them, a constellation of the Holy Triangles- the Prime Energy- shined down above them, and it began to glimmer brightly, becoming brighter and brighter until two small, orb like lights began descending. Each turning gold as they blinding lit up the sky, to gently land next to each of the twins, their glows becoming fainter, being strange, almost sphere like orbs with a star in them- both being half pink and blue, intertwined on their journey here... landing next to these Fated ones.

Link felt warm… too warm- uncomfortably warm even. Stirring in discomfort, the Hylian awoke, sitting up and blinking as he looked at the fire he made, finding it must have been relit…

... but it was no fire pit at a camping sight, but a burning city he did not recognize. In clear view from where he awoke, the surrounding area of this dark, burning place, he saw absolute hellfire raining down with lightning to accompany it, along with what looked like monsters emerging from various burning buildings, attacking various civilians and soldiers. Some would even fall off ledges into pits of lava-

Before he could even process what was going on, he realized he was being dragged along the ground by his cloak, and upon moving, the force that pulled suddenly let go.

“Link, you’re awake!”

Recognizing the distressed voice instantly, Link turned around as quickly as he could, finding it was Zelda who seemed to be pulling him away from the Calamity. Before he could say anything else, she nearly tackled him into a tight hug, refusing to let go.

“Zelda...? What is going on? Where are we?!” Quickly getting helped to his feet, Link got a better look at his twin, noticing she wore an entirely new outfit. It was a white dress with many exposed bits, but she had gauntlets with black gloves, white sleeves, a white scarf, thigh high boots. Her hair was now cut into a short bob, and tucked into the right side of her hair were two flowers- one smaller in the front, and each had five petals. Four were white, and one was blue. “Why do you look like that? How long was-”

“Link, that’s not important right now, we need to leave now!”

Link was caught completely off guard, and attempted to press for more questions. “What is going on? Where are we?! We can’t just leave those people!” Ignoring his pleas, the Princess gripped her brother’s hand, dragging him along a ruined path. “Zelda!?

Continuing up the path they were on, Zelda stopped for a moment, looking back towards the destruction to the city that was currently underway. “It’s too late, I failed the people of Khaenri’ah... and the Gods have cursed them.”

The bitter defeat in her voice was something Link has rarely ever heard from his sister before. He was used to her always having a steadfast resolve, always being there to give support to anyone- him most of all- and was the proud daughter of the Royal Family who never once faltered or shown weakness.

This was something that truly was important to Zelda, and in her eyes, she failed.

Not even knowing how to respond, having no prior context for anything going on, Link looked back up into the dark red sky, flowing with strange dark cubes... and near the destruction, it seemed as if there was dark, floating figure... with long, white, flowing hair. Just as a thought on what or who that could be began, the figure appeared to turn and face them, and their glowing golden eyes and red eye aura was even visible from such a distance.

“Z-Zelda... that person is looking at us-”

“She won't bother us.”

“What? How do you-”

“Link, I'm trying to make a portal!”

What? Since when could Zelda do that? Is that related to the Prime Energy she has?

That was enough to silence him. Even then, he looked back towards the strange Shade-like being, and she seemed to turn her gaze around to the destruction before them. When Link looked down towards it, he was shocked to see what looked like a dark, robed figure with white hair, standing amongst the ruble, looking directly at the floating woman.

Is that... a person?! We can't just leave him-

Raising her hand skyward, a dark red, ominous aura surrounded the woman as a blast and vacuum formed around her, causing even more destruction... yet the man still stood tall, staring her down.

"ZELDA, WE NEED TO GO NOW!" Link exclaimed in fear, reaching for Zelda to try and shake her. Thankfully, in-front of her was a portal, and before Link could utter another word, Zelda dragged him into it with her.

With a flash of white they were no longer in a dark, burning city with a red sky, lava, lighting, and the woman in the sky destroying everything...

... instead, they were surrounded by clouds and pillars in the blue sky. It was Heavenly. Compared to where the twins were a moment ago, this was the polar opposite... calm, peaceful, tranquil…

It was almost like a dream... a dream that you would never want to wake up from or leave, knowing what waited upon awakening.

What the hell is going on? Where are we?! Why is Zelda acting so strange? What is Khaenri’ah?! Why are the Gods angry!? Is this all a dream!? Link asked himself in his head, so full of thoughts and questions, yet had little to no answers for any of them. About to speak aloud and ask Zelda himself-

“Halt. You two have gone far enough.”

A voice echoed throughout the sky, making the twins brace themselves as a figure above them appeared from a dark red, diamond shaped portal. She looked that of an actual Goddess: wrappings on her feet, white robes with some black, long black gloves, and glowing orange eyes, along with incredibly long white hair while standing in the air. Something about her appearance and energy were similar to that of the darker figure they previously saw destroying the city... yet the two were clearly different entities.

“Your journey ends here, outlanders.” She said, summoning a small glowing cube from her hand, pointing it towards the two Hylians.

Zelda seemed to stiffen, going quiet as she tried to think of some kind of plan or way to escape. Meanwhile, Link was still reeling from the whiplash of everything that had occurred, wanting an explanation. “W-who are you?! Where are we? Do you know that Dark God who destroyed that city?!”

The Goddess before them was... curious, to say the least. Staring at the blue-eyed blond, she could sense there was nothing but honestly and confusion in him... yet something about him made her uneasy. Next to him, however, was the green-eyed blonde, who she saw as an immediate threat, knowing of her deeds. “I am the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles, and you Outlanders have entered our world. Regardless of what kind of divine powers you two may have been given by your Gods, the arrogance of mankind shows in you both. I shall ensure no more chaos comes from your intrusion into our world.”

In an instant, the cube in her hand enlarged and turned red, shooting forward at the twins who had to roll out of the way on the narrow bridge they were on. Zelda summoned a long, golden sword with silverly accents, and a guard in the shape of a moon into her right hand. Summoning another one in her left hand, it was identical, yet had a guard with pointed edges like a star, tossing it to Link. Not having the time to dwell on how Zelda was able to do such feats, Link followed Zelda's lead as they charged the Goddess as she summoned legions of dark red, cube like magic towards them.

It was the same red cubes in the sky of the destroyed city they were previously in, and a chill ran through Link's spine. The Hylians dodged what they could, ducking and jumping over multiple projectiles, finally approaching the Goddess, both readying their blades charging in… then the cubes appeared right in front of them. Link, having only witnessed the destruction these cubes had on an entire city, backed up in fear. To his horror, Zelda did not react as he did, becoming engulfed within the cubes. The two twins connected gazes, seeing each others frightened faces before her face was covered, turning into a small cube the God held.

“ZELDA!” Link yelled in pure distress, charging towards the Goddess while she was distracted at the cube she held, striking her with all his might… but his blade went right through her, leaving black cube magic in the place of the slash. By now, Link was out of breath and still panicking from watching his sister be (what he prayed was) captured by some God. Too distracted in his dazed emotions and thoughts, he felt something: the cubes stuck onto his blade spread up to his arm, and then the rest of his body. He watched as the God turned around to disappear.

She didn't even see him as much of a threat, not even sparing a glance at the state she left him in. The Goddess continued to step into her portal she created, done with her business.

“NO, YOU BASTARD!” He yelled in vain, reaching his free arm outward in a desperate attempt to grab the Goddess who was far from reach. “GIVE MY SISTER BACK RIGHT NOW, YOU SON OF A BITCH!” Pure distress engulfed Link as he disregarded the dark magic engulfing him. As his conscious and vision slowly faded all he could let out was a whimper. “Zelda… please don’t go… don’t leave me...”

Absolute silence.

Waking in a sweat; Link began hyperventilating as if he just awoken from a nightmare. Rapidly gasping, Link placed a hand on his chest as he leaned back, trying his hardest to slowly calm down. Everything was just a dream, a very bad dream… yet, once he regained his senses completely, the Hylian realized he was somewhere he didn’t recognize: a small shoreline, facing an ocean with cliffs and trees behind him in the middle of the night. He got up to find that his sword, pack, the horses- and most importantly- Zelda, were all missing. All he had was the clothes he wore and his thoughts.

“Zelda?”

There was no voice that called back out.

 “Zelda!?”

The only response was that of the sound of the wind blowing through trees, and waves around him.

“Where are you?! ZELDA!!”

Yelling loudly, now beginning to break down into tears, Link fell to his knees to catch his breath. Completely confused and overwhelmed, feeling so, so helpless in that very moment like the night before. Scared, confused, and crying… but this time, he was alone without his sister to comfort him. Eventually, Link exhausted himself, and strangely enough, the sounds of the wind that blew around him was almost... soothing. So much so, it sounded like a Lyre was being played gently next to him, calming him as he succumbed to his fatigue.

...

The following morning, and Link woke up finding he was on the same shore yet again, realizing this was not a dream and indeed reality. Pinching himself as a desperate attempt, it elected no reaction besides pain, along with the feeling of his dry throat, and sounds of his stomach rumbling. He was starving, dehydrated, and all alone in a place he did not know with nothing on him.

Turning around, he saw the one of the trees had two apples. It was a start, and apples were always a favorite little snack of his. Sighing, Link stood up and walked over to one, reaching for one of the apples, hoping to collect his bearings and evaluate the situation better, along with feeding himself. However, just as the Hylian grabbed onto the apple, he felt something strange and soft underneath his hand between it and the apple, and before he could pull the apple from the tree and look at it, a small, soft hand came from the leaves in the tree, grabbing at his hand that held the apple. The sight of this hand, and sensation frightened Link as he immediately screamed in fear from whatever it was touching him, swiftly turning his body and throwing the apple towards the ocean along with whatever was holding on to it underneath his hand, seeing a small white figure go with the apple.

“WAAAAHHAHAHAHHAHA-”

With a high pitched cry and splash, the thing was in the water as Link sighed and turned around and wiped his hand off… only to then register that was indeed a small human hand and scream, and he threw whoever was attached to it into the ocean. Sure enough, a small head with white hair poked out of the water, gasping for air, yet inhaled more water instead, sinking slowly with their hand being the last thing in view before completely submerging silently into the water without a single plea for help. Link waited a moment in shock, realizing whoever it was, they were drowning, and if he didn’t turn around to see it in time, he wouldn't be halfway to them in the water trying to rescue whoever it was he threw into the ocean right now. Once he got ahold of them and made it back to land, the small child was sat down, coughing up water on all fours.

“OH MY GOSH I’M SO SORRY! I DIDN’T MEAN TO THROW YOU INTO THE OCEAN, I JUST WAS SCARED FROM YOU TOUCHING MY HAND!” Link exclaimed out of fear and guilt, trying to check if the small child was breathing fine. “ARE YOU OKAY? ARE YOU HURT?” His voice felt strained from effectively screaming so loudly, let alone even speaking so much in the past three years.

The tiny… child-like person stood up and began… floating? She had a weird scarf with star patterns on it, and a little crown floating around her head, and wore a puffy white dress of sorts. Link being hungry made him think she looked almost like a marshmallow, only to come back to reality that she was not food, but a floating child. “You almost killed Paimon! Paimon was just hungry, and you made her almost drown!”

Link was bewildered, yet apologetic all the same, still in shock as he essentially bowed for forgiveness. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean it! I just got scared!”

The child looked at Link, studying him as she let out a sigh. “Well, you don’t sound like you meant it, and you seem like you feel pretty bad… okay, Paimon forgives you.” Then, the child smiled at Link. “You seem like a nice enough lady.”

A lady? She thinks I’m a girl?! Was it because of his appearance, or his voice sounding high pitch when he yelled? He was about to correct her, yet… he didn’t want to. It felt good being called a lady, like how the older woman referred to him and Zelda as such the day prior. “Um, thank you…” Link visibly felt shy and his voice became softer… androgynous sounding, but still softer compared to how he spoke for the past three years. “So... are you okay? What’s a child doing here alone… and what’s your name?”

“Hmppf! Paimon is not a child! Paimon is Paimon!” Paimon pouted, folding her arms at the assumption.

“Oh, you talk in third person? So, your name is Paimon and you’re… not a child, just a small floating person?” Link asked, sounding so confused at even his attempt to understand.

Paimon tilted her head, appearing confused herself. “What does third person mean?”

Link sighed rubbing his temples. “Third person means… ah, never mind, pretend I said nothing.”

“So, what’s your name, and how did you get here ma’am?” Paimon asked curiously as she looked at Link with eyes full of questions.

Again, Link felt something when being called ma’am: it felt good- no, it felt right- so right, yet he had to correct her. “I um, I’m not-” stopping himself, he went silent- he couldn’t bring himself to finish the sentence.

“Are you okay, miss?” Paimon asked yet again, staring at Link becoming worried with what was wrong with the human.

It finally cracked.

It all made sense now.

After years of being confused, always preferring how it felt to be called a “Vai” or any female pronoun or term opposed to male ones, and dressing and presenting himself in more feminine way opposed to being masculine- somehow, after being mistaken- no, seen as a woman… it all made sense now again- and this time, he was not taking no for an answer.

He was not a boy, he was not a man, he was not a Prince, and he would certainly not be a King. She was a girl: she always was one, briefly finding herself in the world, yet shunned into hiding herself away, but now… the past two days, and this floating child who she had just met referring to her as what she is- to of seen her as what she has always been, she refused to stay in her egg any longer- to never go back into it.

“My name?” She thought, unsure if her name was fine to use, but quickly, she concluded it was her name- it was not strictly a boy’s name- hell, it was uncommon and not something anyone was ever named, especially her being of royalty… it was just she was a girl who was named Link. For the first time, Link can now introduce herself as herself.

She was just Link, like her mother told her… finally she understood who she was, and could be herself.

“My name is Link.”
