It was almost as if they didn’t buy an apartment that had enough room for each of them to have their own respective spaces, Subaru thinks.
He suddenly blinked awake to the feeling of his covers being raised on one side, a warm body sliding in to tuck itself to his right. Hokuto would’ve felt like a bag of ice, and Makoto was sure to still be playing games. But he could have decided to sleep early tonight unlike usual, he thinks.
At this point, Subaru wasn’t sure which one of the others it was, so he cracked his eyes open just a little bit wider to check.
He finds Mao’s hair splayed over his shoulder, hair clip still in place where it holds his bangs back from joining the rest of his hair. His heart feels warm once he sees which of his boyfriends it is, but he still croaks out a quiet “Sari, your clip…” while raising a hand to slip it off and put it on his nightstand.
He doesn’t want his boyfriend to wake up the next morning rubbing at his scalp, complaining about how he forgot to take out his clip again.
Their youngest boyfriend was such a hard worker that he could forget to do the most mundane things when it comes to himself. They’re just glad to be trusted by Mao enough to let them take care of him.
Subaru grins to himself at the soft grumble he gets in response, gently massaging Mao’s scalp as he melts into the touch. Like a cat , he thinks.
A glance at the clock tells him that it’s still early into the night, if ten in the night would be considered ‘early’.
“Sari, did you even change out of your uniform?” He was starting to sound a bit more awake, which prompted Mao to turn his head up and look up at Subaru. He looked so tired, and Subaru tuts gently while rubbing at the bags forming under his boyfriend’s eyes.
“I… took off my blazer. And my pants, I think…” Mao yawned, and snuggled deeper into Subaru’s hold. He guesses it was good enough, so he lets Mao continue on his journey to dreamland after pressing a kiss to his head. “Goodnight, Mao.”
Hokuto would be the one to scold Mao for not changing into more comfortable clothes in the morning, so he’d spare their boyfriend from a scolding when he’s trying to rest.
He feels more than he hears Mao’s own “Goodnight, Subaru,” against his collarbone.
Subaru closes his eyes with a smile, a happy noise leaving his lips while curling the arm under Mao around the other.
—
Not too long after, Subaru finds himself blinking awake for a second time, but looking at the clock, it’s only been an hour since earlier.
Tilting his head to his right reveals that Mao is still asleep on his shoulder, but his arms are now wrapped around his waist with the gentle puffs of his breath hitting Subaru’s neck.
Looking to the left reveals that Hokuto was sluggishly climbing into his bed.
“Hokke…?” He calls out to the other, getting a soft grunt in response.
Hokuto cuddles up to his left side, tangling his cold feet with Subaru’s own in an effort to warm up.
He groans, cringing at the sudden change in temperature, but still wraps an arm around his other boyfriend. “Hokke, you’re so cold! Stop putting your ice block feet right on mine!” Subaru complains, burying his face into Hokuto’s hair.
“Why’re you even here, I was having a moment with Sari!” He feels Hokuto huff in indignation, satisfied with how their legs are all tangled with each other’s.
And as if the other was retaliating for what he said, Subaru yelps when he feels even colder hands resting on his tummy.
“I was cold. And don’t be too loud, Akehoshi. You’re going to wake Isara up with all of your noise.” Subaru’s face felt a little tingly at the low grumble, pressing kisses to the top of Hokuto’s head. He earns a few more grunts of complaint until his stomach gets pinched, stopping him from doing any more.
“You’re so lucky your voice sounds nice like this, Hokke, or I would’ve never forgiven you for that.” He hears and feels Hokuto chuckle, pressing a sleepy kiss to his jaw.
“You didn’t make Isara change out of his uniform, did you?” Subaru knows that Hokuto already knows the answer to that, only grinning against the top of his boyfriend’s head. “I knew that you’ll be the one to scold him tomorrow, so I’ll leave it to you, Mom.”
He squawks at the slap to his thigh, snickering when Mao stirs and grumbles after being disturbed. Subaru and Hokuto stay still until Mao’s back asleep, and Subaru chuckles quietly.
“Who are you calling… Just go back to sleep, Subaru. Goodnight,” Hokuto sighs, burying his face into the crook of Subaru’s neck with a soft kiss on the skin.
“Yeah, Goodnight, Hokuto.”
And so they close their eyes to sleep, but not without a quiet exchange of “I love you”s.
—
Subaru wonders if this is what it’d be like for the rest of his life, in a good way.
He finds himself stirring again, and looking at the clock, it’s almost four in the morning. Looking down at his torso reveals that Hokuto and Mao started holding hands in their sleep, tucked snugly against Subaru’s sides and tangling their legs with his.
The final intruder chuckles quietly, pressing a warm kiss to Subaru’s forehead.
“Sorry, Akehoshi-kun, did I wake you?” A smile spreads on his face at the voice, using the arm around Mao to beckon his last boyfriend over. A happy noise leaves him when he feels the bed dip as Makoto gently settles behind Mao.
Makoto was definitely up playing video games again, he thinks distantly. The fog of sleep was still clinging to him, but he wanted to stay awake until Makoto himself fell asleep.
“It’s okay, Ukki, I don’t mind.” Subaru hears the clatter of glasses being placed on the nightstand, possibly beside Mao’s hair clip. He then hears Makoto chuckle, pressing another kiss to his face before wrapping an arm around both Mao and Subaru’s waists.
Subaru sighs affectionately, gently squeezing Makoto’s forearm in return.
Everyone else shuffles over to sleepily accommodate their newest addition to their slightly cramped bed, doing their best to prevent anyone from falling off the edge.
He pushes the thought of asking the rest of them if they should invest in a bigger bed to the back of his head, feeling a hand card through his hair and scratching at his scalp. Subaru melts at the touch, tugging his boyfriends closer as best as he could.
Hokuto responds in kind by sticking even closer, and Mao seemed like he didn’t know if he should lean into Subaru or Makoto’s hold.
“Go to sleep, Akehoshi-kun, it’s an off day for all of us tomorrow.”
He hums, and tiredly reaches over to press a blind kiss somewhere on Makoto’s face. Subaru grins when he feels lips meeting his, quickly pressing another chaste peck before laying his head back on his pillow.
Hokuto and Mao stirred from the movement, grumbling as they started to shuffle closer to get back into a comfortable position.
“Goodnight, Makoto, Hokuto, Mao.”
“Yeah, goodnight, Subaru,”
A chorus of two barely intelligible grumbles of “Goodnight,” are mumbled into Subaru’s skin, and the four of them finally go to sleep until the late hours of the morning.
