Chapter 1: Spring 0

Chapter Text

Rin sighed to himself, staring down at his desk blankly. Everyday was the same things, day in, day out, report after report after useless, frivolous report for Joja Corp. He could feel something in him breaking, some fundamental aspect of who he was being ground to dust beneath the heel of the soulless megacorporation. But no, he had to finish the Davidson report by lunch and there was still the other dozen reports he was expected to file by the end of lunch.

He sighed again, digging through a desk drawer to find another pen, when he came across an envelope, crinkled and slightly faded, remembering with sudden clarity the words his again grandfather had told him four years prior.

'Open this when life gets to be too much.'

Twenty minutes later saw him striding into his manager's office, a pleasant smile upon his face. "I am here to inform you that I am resigning, effective immediately." He stated, only to get a snort in return.

"You still gotta finish the Davidson report, employee number 20257. All tasks assigned directly to an employee must be completed regardless of employment status. Its in your contract." The manager replied, not bothering to glance up.

Rin simply stood there smiling, causing the manager to eventually look up and start to ask why he was still there, only to pause at the trail of smoke coming from Rin's former cubicle.

"If you hurry, you might even be able to salvage part of it." Rin informed him, only for the trickle of smoke to suddenly flare up and start blazing. "Oops. I must have left the rest of the matches in the drawer too." He added, and the manager dashed out of the office with a scream about his 'precious reports'.

Rin, meanwhile, did a little twirl around the side of the desk and into the recently vacated chair, thumbing the button on the phone to make a building-wide page even as he picked it up.

"Hello, fellow coworkers. Or rather, previously fellow coworkers. This is employee number 20257 here with the latest departure from reality, here to inform you that the building is now on fire. Kindly evacuate with haste, and would someone please collect poor Gladys along the way? Dear's been dead for a week and someone really ought to inform her next of kin. Toodles!" He trilled, hanging up the phone, hitting the fire alarm button (located solely in management's office, to "prevent tampering") as he left.

Three hours later saw three phonecalls, a suitcase being packed, and pale blonde hair being coated in emerald green.

Three days after that saw him stepping off the train into Stardew Valley, ready to take over his grandfather's old farm and carve out a new home for himself.

Notes:

I started another playthrough of Stardew recently, and, surprise of surprises, felt well enough to write something. So surprise I guess.
