In the aftermath of the battle, Canterlot High stood in ruins beneath the pale glow of the moon, the grounds of the school lay eerily silent. The bitter wind rustled through the leaves and gaps, hinting at the turmoil within the hearts of two young women who stood facing each other in the school’s courtyard which was now littered with shattered concrete and the broken statue of the rearing horse. Classroom windows were smashed, and walls bore deep scars, while desks and chairs lay in disarray.
Twilight Sparkle, adorned with the glow of her crown that lay upon another's head. She looked at Sunset Shimmer with a look of sorrow and determination. Sunset, her eyes ablaze with dark magic, stood tall and defiant. Her transformation into a demonic being was complete; skin crimson, eyes glowing with unrestrained power. But behind the fierce façade, there was something vulnerable and broken. Both of them panted heavily, exhausted from their intense confrontation.
“Twilight sparkle,” Sunset sneered, her voice echoing with anger and a touch of desperation, wiping the blood dripping from her nose. “You became Celestia’s favorite. You took everything I had. The love, the power... and her respect for me.”
Twilight took a hesitant step forward, her heart aching at the sight before her. Broken glass and rubble crunched under her feet. “Sunset, this isn’t you. I know there’s still good inside you. This darkness… it’s not who you are.”
Sunset’s lips trembled, her bravado faltering. “Don’t you dare pretend to understand me, Twilight Sparkle. You had everything handed to you on a silver platter. I had to fight for every scrap of recognition. And then, you showed up and... and everyone loved you, praised for your effortless talent. I will NEVER forgive you for what you took from me.”
A gust of wind swept through the courtyard, carrying with it the distant sound of sirens. Twilight’s eyes softened, glistening with unshed tears. She reached out a trembling hand, her voice raw with emotion. “Sunset, please! I never wanted to replace you. You’re special, can’t you see? I don’t want to fight you.”
“You don't mean that!” Sunset screamed, voice cracked, betraying her true feelings. “You don’t know what it’s like to be cast aside, to be forgotten…”
Twilight’s resolve strengthened. “I’m not forgetting you, Sunset. I never will. We can fix this. Just listen to me!”
For a moment, Sunset’s fierce gaze wavered. The magic within her seemed to falter, and the raging storm in her eyes turned into a sea of confusion and pain. She stepped back, clutching at her chest as if the emotions inside were tearing her apart.
“Twi…” Sunset whispered, her voice breaking. “All I ever wanted was… was for you to notice me, to see me for who I am. Not just a shadow in your light.”
Twilight’s heart shattered at the revelation. She reached out, gently cupping Sunset’s face, her thumb brushing away a single tear that escaped the demon’s eye. “Sunset, my light, you’ve always been more than just a shadow to me. You’ve always shone brightly, I should have payed more attention.”
Sunset’s breath hitched, her eyes closing as she leaned into Twilight’s touch. The dark magic around her began to dissipate, leaving only the vulnerable girl beneath the monstrous exterior. Slowly, Sunset’s wings and fiery aura vanished, and she returned to her human form, crumbling into Twilight’s arms.
“I’m so sorry,” Sunset sobbed, her body trembling. “I didn’t know what else to do. I felt so alone… so lost.”
Twilight’s own tears began to fall as she held Sunset close, their foreheads touching. “I’m sorry too, Sunset. I should have seen your pain. I should have been there for you.”
In that moment, under the silent moonlight, their lips met in a gentle, sorrowful kiss. It was a kiss filled with all the pain, regret, and longing that had built up between them. Their tears mingled, salty and warm, as they poured their hearts into that fleeting touch.
The gymnasium’s roof was partially caved in, casting ghostly beams of light across the wreckage. Hallways, usually filled with the sounds of student life, were now silent and strewn with twisted lockers and scattered belongings. The library's shelves were toppled, and books lay torn and scattered. Outside, the sports fields were marred with deep ruts and scorched patches. The track, a place of dreams, was now a loop of broken asphalt. Emotions of the two intertwining felt out of place being surrounded by desolation, shining hope across the grounds.
But the reality of their situation loomed over them like a dark cloud. The magic that had brought Twilight to this world was fading, and with it, the time they had left together.
“I have to go, Sunset,” Twilight whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “I have to return to Equestria. This world… it needs its Twilight.”
“No… please, don’t leave me,” Sunset begged, her voice a broken plea. “I can’t do this without you.”
Twilight pulled back, her heart breaking at the sight of Sunset’s tear-streaked face. “You’re stronger than you think, my light. You can find your own path, your own light. I believe in you.”
With one last, lingering kiss, Twilight gently extricated herself from Sunset’s embrace. As she stepped back, the portal to Equestria shimmered into existence behind her, its glow a stark contrast to the darkness enveloping them.
“Twi… I… I love you,” Sunset cried out, reaching towards the fading figure of her love.
“I love you too, my light,” Twilight replied, her voice barely a whisper as she stepped through the portal.
And with that, Twilight Sparkle disappeared, leaving Sunset Shimmer alone in the courtyard, her heart shattered into a thousand pieces. The wind howled around her, carrying away her sobs into the night, as the first light of dawn began to pierce the darkness.
Sunset fell to her knees, clutching at the empty space where Twilight had stood. She was alone, once more, with only the memory of their love and the hope that one day, she would find her way back into the light.
In the quiet aftermath, as the sun rose over Canterlot High, the world seemed to hold its breath. Sunset Shimmer knelt alone amidst the bittersweet destruction she'd created. The light cast harsh shadows but also whispered of hope and the possibility of rebuilding from the ashes. And in the heart of Sunset Shimmer, a small spark of hope remained, flickering gently against the encroaching darkness.
------
in the days following, Sunset Shimmer had repaired broken bonds with the students she had left for dead to gain power over the human realm. Nobody had figured out that she wasn't truly from there, or known about the confrontation between her and twilight sparkle. The main six' human counterparts, disregarding Twilight, came to and forgave sunset, though still being weary.
Of course, being the entire reason their whole campus was destroyed and almost injuring her fellow students, she had to pay for the reconstruction, it took a while for her to gather the funds but other students had pitched in little donations, with understanding and forgiveness. eventually, everything had gone fairly back to normal. a few people still gave her odd looks of judgement but she was accepted into the main six, becoming a part of their band 'Rainbow Rocks'.
Sunset knew she wasn't alone.
