Work Text:
Papers lay scattered across a disorganized desk, followed by the harsh scribbling of a ball pointed pen flicking across documents in aggravation. Medkit sat in his office, hunched over his desk with a gloved hand tangled into his somewhat tidy hair. The medic was stressed, to say the least, as being a doctor wasn’t easy. That also meant going through documents and medical histories of said patients. How fun.
To Medkit, he felt as if he were babysitting a bunch of idiots who couldn’t spend a second without getting hurt. Every single time a patient came in with injuries, he had to restrain himself from literally ripping his own hair straight from his scalp in absolute fury. It enraged him when people kept coming back with injuries over and over again, and Medkit hated it to a degree.
His fingers gripped his pen in a vice-like grip, almost as if the slightest bit of pressure were going to make the pen explode right then and there in his hand. He grit his teeth in frustration, his deer tail giving an occasional flick of exasperation and exhaustion. He felt as if he were about to collapse right then and there, and he groaned as he rubbed his eye tiredly. He set his pen down, deciding to take a moment to at least try and relax, but his attempts at being calm were almost futile, as he still sat there, stressed out.
He looked at his watch, wincing to himself as the time was pretty much a quarter to midnight. Jeez, how long has he been trapped in his office? Time seemed to slip right out of his grasp whenever he indulged in something as unruly as loads and loads of documents for hours on end with no stop. It almost seemed like a habit that he simply couldn’t break out of. And by god, did it burn him out. He sighed, standing up from his chair as he gave a stretch, his joints giving out those satisfying cracks and pops. Boy, he was stiff.
Medkit decided to unwind by making himself a nice warm cup of tea. He stood for a moment, only starting to notice the effects of sleep deprivation hitting him like a bat to a knee cap. (Did that one to my brother with a metal bat by accident in 2nd grade 💀) Medkit then began to make his way to the kitchen, the soft click of his hooves against the wood floors giving a soft echo throughout the apartment. He turned the light on, wincing as the brightness of the light strained his eye for a moment, before he began to prepare himself some chamomile tea.
As he was about to put water in the kettle, a knock on the door made him pause from his actions, a groan of frustration and annoyance evident in his voice as he called out, “Yeah yeah, I’m coming.” He opened the door, only to freeze as he saw the massive frame of his boyfriend standing causally in the doorway. Banhammer gave a smirk, looking down at Medkit (he doesn’t have his blindfold on) “Heya Meds.” He said, his tone a tad bit playful as his four lavender eyes stared into Medkit’s singular one. Medkit gave a heavy sigh, shaking his head.
“Christ on a stick, Ban, you scared me.” Medkit said, irritation in his voice. Banhammer shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans, giving off a carefree shrug.
”M’ bad, Meds. Anyways, can I come in?” Banhammer asked. Medkit hesitated, before stepping aside to allow his demigod of a boyfriend into his small ass apartment. Banhammer plopped himself onto the medic’s couch, making himself comfortable as he sighed, leaning back against the soft cushions on the couch. Medkit shut the front door, before walking over to Banhammer, crossing his arms over his chest.
“So, why you even up so late? It’s almost 2 AM.” *Medkit said, his voice being the usual monotone, with a tiny bit of curiosity. Banhammer didn’t respond for a moment, before he spoke up. “I could ask ya th’ same thing, Meds.” Banhammer said, smug grin on his face. Medkit gave a sigh of annoyance, though, his features did soften if not only a little bit at his boyfriend’s attitude.
”I’m just a bit stressed. Nothing much.” He said, giving a small huff. Banhammer raised an eyebrow at his boyfriend’s sour mood. Usually, Medkit would at least be a bit more soft around him, but judging by the way his tail flicked and his expression gave off utter frustration, something was stressing him out badly.
”Meds. You can tell m’ if somethin’s wrong. What’s botherin’ ya?” Banhammer asked. Medkit avoided Banhammer’s concerned gaze, preferring to keep his emotions masked under aloofness and professionalism. He utter not a single word, and walked over to the kitchen to continue his preparation of making tea, while Banhammer sat on the couch, a bewildered look on his face. He got up, his huge dragon-like tail thumping against the ground as he walked over to where Medkit was.
”Med’s, c’mon, I know somethin’s botherin’ ya. Yer all sour. C’mon, what’s wrong?” Banhammer said, tone a bit firm. Medkit didn’t turn to look or even glance at his lover as he spoke in a neutral tone. “Banhammer, I’m alright. I’m just a bit stressed. Nothing I can’t handle.” Medkit said. Banhammer gave an incredulous look as he placed a hand on Medkit’s shoulder. The sudden touch made Medkit freeze in confusion and shock, as the sudden grab of his shoulder was an unexpected one at that. “Bullshit, Meds. I just wanna try an’ help ya, alright? I hate seein’ ya stressed out like this.” Banhammer said, his tone soft and sincere. Medkit’s shoulders drooped down, as he was able to convey the genuine worry in Banhammer’s voice as he tried to get him to open up.
Medkit gave a sigh, before he stopped shat he was doing and turned to face his partner, having to crane his head up a little due to Banhammer being way taller than him. He looked into Banhammer’s eyes, bing able to see the concern that was in them. Silence filled the air for a moment, before Medkit spoke up. “Look, Ban, I…It’s just work stress. Documents. Data files. It’s all putting an immense toll on me, and I simply can’t find a way to elude all of this work for a moment without worrying about falling behind on schedule. It’s…a nightmare.” Medkit said.
Understanding and care edged onto Banhammer’s face as he sighed softly. He then wrapped his arms around the medic’s frame, feeling Medkit freeze, then relax in his hold.
“Med, you should rest. Takin’ a break once in a little bit is better than not takin’ one at all.” The warden said quietly as he held Medkit close. Medkit closed his eye for a moment, allowing Banhammer to soothe him as he felt his hand rub comforting circles on his back, and it kinda calmed him in a way. He delt safe with Banhammer, knowing he could trust his lover to care for him and protect him. He nuzzled into Banhammer’s hold, feeling a wave of fatigue suddenly wash over him like a tidal wave. Banhammer noticed Medkit’s sleepy behavior, and chuckled.
“Well, someone’s sleepy, eh? C’mon, hun. Let’s get ya t’ bed now.” Banhammer said as he began to carry Medkit to his room. Medkit wanted to protest, to argue and say that he was a grown adult who could take care of himself. But, he was way too tired to even form a coherent sentence as he lay boneless in his boyfriend’s strong, yet gentle hold. He sighed softly as he felt his body being placed onto his soft mattress. He felt the pull of sleep trying to weigh him down once more, as he felt Banhammer snuggle up right next to him. Medkit felt the warden gently spoon him, as he buried his head in the crook of Medkit’s neck. Medkit gave a shiver at Ban’s breath against his neck, but relaxed as his eye kept closing involuntarily.
He smiled as Banhammer scratched under his deer ears, giving a content and relaxed purr as he closed his eye.
He felt content as he snuggled against his lover, before he dozed off peacefully, feeling utterly content and lucky to be in a relationship with someone as sweet and caring as Banhammer.
