Work Text:
The door of Enid and Wednesday’s shared dorm opened with a creak, effectively disturbing Wednesday’s seclusion. She sat at her desk, typing away at her typewriter. Upon hearing the door open, she turns around with a slight grimace at having her writing time disturbed. Her gaze softened slightly at the sight of her colorful werewolf girlfriend bounding into the room with a grin so bright that it could light up a thousand Christmas trees.
Enid wore a soft, pink, Christmas sweater, decked with a huge and adorable gingerbread woman on the front. Wednesday personally found the sweater to be too much, but she would never tell Enid that. She also had a white miniskirt on with fleece lined tights underneath due to the chilly and nippy weather.
A soft sigh escapes Wednesday as Enid approaches her. The werewolf’s face was practically radiating excitement as her hands flapped frantically. “ Wends! Wends! Guess what we should do!”
“ I do not see the purpose in guessing, as you will just tell me anyhow. Go on, Enid.” Wednesday unwillingly awaits Enid’s response, not overly fond of guessing games.
“ It’s finally cold enough for the ice rink to be frozen! We should totally go ice skating! It’ll be the best!” Wednesday’s gaze moves to the window, one half covered in Enid’s color and the other reflecting her dark and monochrome personality. It was in fact snowing which indicated to Wednesday that the temperature must have dropped as well.
It was a mere two weeks before Christmas break, and Enid was determined to fit in all of the Christmas activities possible before they were forced to spend Christmas apart with their own separate families. Today, she seemed to have ice skating on her list much to Wednesday’s dismay.
“Absolutely not.” Enid’s face falters a little bit in disappointment at Wednesday’s blunt and cold tone. “ I will not have myself look like an imbecile attempting to sail across a patch of ice on two blades. Blades are meant to massacre people anyhow, not be used for your pointless Christmas related festivities.” Wednesday decided to leave out the part about how she had skated on occasion at her family’s mansion per her parents request.
Enid sighs in exasperation, putting her hands on her hips. “Please! Skating is like THE couples Christmas activity. Nine times out of ten, Christmas movies contain a skating scene. Besides, nobody from school will be there! Probably.” That last part of her statement was laced with uncertainty; however, she decided to say it anyways in hopes of convincing her girlfriend.
Wednesday’s eyes narrow as she stares at her girlfriend in disbelief. Did Enid really think she would even consider going skating with her? Unfortunately for Wednesday, Enid’s pleading and puppy-eyed expression begins to chip away at her defenses. “ If I go with, and that is a huge if, what will I receive as compensation?”
The werewolf’s face breaks out into a grin as she realizes she’s practically already won Wednesday over. Enid bites her lip in thought for a moment before her eyes light up with an idea. “ How about I get you a nice warm and bitter coffee afterwards? My treat. I’ll need to stop at the Weathervane for a hot chocolate to warm myself up after anyways, so why not?”
Personally, Wednesday thought a personal sacrifice like going skating required a better reward than coffee, but she decided to relent. For Enid’s sake. “Fine. I suppose I will go skating with you. On the condition that we only stay for a short amount of time. Typically I enjoy the feeling of my body parts numbing, but I’d rather not experience that on a rink packed with winter obsessed idiots.”
Enid nods in agreement with a joyful smile, her feet stomping on the ground cheerfully. “ Deal! Now let’s go! It’ll be dark soon.” Enid moves to the front of the dorm to throw on her cozy pink coat. Reluctantly, Wednesday rises from her desk. She was dressed warmly enough, a black and white striped sweater and a pair of black cargo pants. She pads to the door by her girlfriend, grabbing her black coat off of the hook on the wall and slipping it on.
As Wednesday is putting her coat on, Enid steps back into their dorm further to grab their matching snoods she had made for them a few months ago. “We should wear our snoods! It’s cold so they’ll be useful. Plus it’ll look super cute!” Ah yes, the dreaded snoods. Wednesday didn’t appreciate being forced to look ‘cute’; however, Enid put effort into the gift and Wednesday respected that. She didn’t want to hurt the werewolf’s feelings after all.
Wednesday forces a neutral expression rather than a frown, snatching the snood out of Enid’s hands and beginning to put it on. “ Thank you, cara mia.” Enid nods and shuffles her own snood on, the pink knitted material covering the top of her head. She stares at her girlfriend once her black snood is on, silently admiring her.
“ You look amazing, lovely! And super cozy which is always a plus.” Wednesday’s heart flutters against her will at the nauseating pet name Enid had conjured up for her. She utters a small ‘thank you’, unable to bring herself to return the compliment. She did think Enid looked pretty, but it felt too sappy to say out loud.
Enid gives Wednesday a soft peck on the cheek before opening the door and exiting the dorm, expecting Wednesday to follow her to catch the shuttle into Jericho. Wednesday stands frozen in place for a moment due to the kiss before ultimately walking quickly to catch up with her girlfriend.

The two girls collectively shiver as they step off the shuttle, the town’s skating rink in sight as it is at the very center of town. Enid takes Wednesday’s gloved hand in her own, practically pulling her along as she excitedly makes her way to the rink.
“ Look, love! The skating rink is basically dead!” Enid gestures with her free hand to the mostly vacant skating rink, apart from a few people.
“ Just like my soul.” Enid scoffs and shakes her head as she brings Wednesday over to the small stand where they can rent skates. Enid requests their sizes, all whilst Wednesday grumbles softly to herself beside her.
The two sit beside each other on the bench to tie their skates up as tightly as possible. Wednesday notices Enid’s nose get a little red from the cold and she can’t help but blush, much to her dismay, at the sight of it. She diverts her attention back to her beat-up rental skates as she continues to lace them up. “ Your nose is red.”
Enid instinctively reaches a hand up to wipe her nose, as if it would provide enough warmth to change the color of it. Her skates are done up, although not nearly as tightly as they should be. “ I know it’s red, Wednesday. That’s typically what happens when it's chilly out.”
“Those aren’t tight enough. Sit still for a moment.” Once her own skates are done up, Wednesday huffs and kneels in front of Enid, undoing her skates to re-lace them tightly. As she does so, Enid flushes and stays still. She can hear Wednesday mutter something along the lines of “Must I do everything?” and “ Helpless werewolf.” Despite this, she knows Wednesday truly doesn’t mind lending a hand.
“Thanks, Wends.” Enid fidgets with her hands somewhat awkwardly as Wednesday finishes doing her skates up. She rises, adjusting the black snood on her head slightly.
Wednesday pulls Enid to her feet, letting out a sigh as she immediately begins to wobble from imbalance. “ Don’t mention it. Just try not to die, alright? As much as I enjoy funerals, I’d like to hope yours is very far in the future.”
Enid nods, steadying herself with a little smile. “No dying! Got it! Okay let’s go!” She squeals with excitement and the two of them shuffle towards the ice.
Wednesday steps on the ice almost effortlessly, whereas Enid looks unsure and partly terrified. Her grip on Wednesday’s hands is like death, and Wednesday can’t help but smirk at her childish terror. She keeps her grip on Enid steady as she attempts to coax her onto the ice. “You will be fine, Enid. Hurry up so we can head home, would you?”
Enid lets out a whine as she shakily steps onto the ice, still gripping onto Wednesday as she almost collapses. “ Shit..”
Wednesday raises an eyebrow at Enid’s curse, keeping their hands firmly conjoined. “ Calm yourself would you? Just hold onto me, alright mi vida?” Enid nods reluctantly, her legs trembling due to the unstable surface of the ice.
Wednesday slowly skates forward and Enid messily copies her movements. If it weren’t for Wednesday’s reassuring presence, she most definitely would be doing a faceplant right now. The werewolf and the psychic skate at a snail's pace until Wednesday smirks and speeds up a little, causing Enid to let out a noise of surprise. “ Wednesday! Careful!”
Wednesday would never admit it out loud, but she was thoroughly enjoying herself. Perhaps it was because she was with Enid and nothing could be torturous if Enid was around. At least not the bad kind of torturous. Wednesday enjoyed certain types of torture, and ice skating with her girlfriend was one of those types.
As Wednesday speeds up a little, Enid leans back a little too far. This caused her to fall onto her back with a little thud, almost taking Wednesday down with her. Wednesday’s eyes flash with a hint of concern as she offers her a hand up.
“ Are you alright, Enid?” Enid can sense the worry in her girlfriend’s voice, so she nods with a soft smile as she allows her to help her up.
“Yep! I’m fine! Don’t worry, lovely! It didn’t hurt surprisingly.” Wednesday lets out a sigh of relief as she starts skating again, slower this time to avoid another incident.
As they skate peacefully, the two can clearly hear “Let it snow” playing on the speaker. Wednesday grimaces as the cheerful music assaults her eardrums; however, her girlfriend seems to be beaming with glee. “ I love this song!”
“ Of course you do. It’s so very you, Enid.” Enid giggles a little, giving Wednesday’s hand an affectionate squeeze. They skate for a while longer, simply enjoying each other's presence and the festive atmosphere.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday and Enid both enter the Weathervane, shivering from the chilly air outside. Enid rubs her gloved hands together to gain some more warmth. “ Gosh it’s so cold out!”
Wednesday only nods slightly in agreement, running a hand through her braid in a soothing manner. Enid makes her way to the front, starting to order a candy cane hot chocolate. Wednesday steps up to be standing behind her as Enid also orders a black coffee, just what she likes.
The girls stand by the counter, awaiting their order. As they wait, Enid can’t help but stare at Wednesday which Wednesday doesn’t notice. She can’t help but think about how perfect her side profile was, how pretty her bangs were and how much they suited her face.
Wednesday stood oblivious, watching the worker make their drinks with a terrifying and expectant gaze. As he hands them their drinks, he looks a bit scared of Wednesday’s intimidating gaze. “ Thank you! Merry Christmas!” Wednesday scoffs at Enid’s cheerful tone, sitting down in a booth with her coffee. Enid sits across from her and opens the lid to her drink, blowing on it to cool it down.
“Thanks for coming skating with me, Wends. It means a lot.” The writer nods reluctantly, taking a sip of her coffee.
“ You’re welcome. I suppose.” Enid waits a moment longer to take a sip, wanting it to be closer to lukewarm.
“ I’m so excited for Christmas, but I’ll miss you.” Wednesday nods in agreement, tapping her foot mindlessly under the table.
“ I will miss you too, mi amor.” Enid grabs her girlfriend's hand from across the table with a slight blush.
They enjoy their drinks with the occasional small talk before getting up and leaving. They walk outside, holding each other’s hands tightly, waiting at the stop for the shuttle back to Nevermore.
Enid spontaneously leans in to press her lips to Wednesday’s with the snow falling around them. She holds her lips against her girlfriends for a few seconds, both of their stomachs seemingly full of snowflakes at the sensation. Enid pulls back, her face flushing. Wednesday’s face is red as well much to her despair.
“Don’t do that so suddenly, idiot.” Enid giggles and embraces her, causing Wednesday to tense up in place before hesitantly returning the hug.
“Merry early Christmas, Wends.” Wednesday sighs, deciding she would return the sentiment for Enid’s happiness.
“Merry early Christmas to you too, Enid.”
