Chapter Text
Sun hesitated as he stood outside the large double doors that led to his grandfather’s office. Usually if he had ever been ordered to go there, it was because he had somehow done something wrong. Unlike his brother, he wasn’t as skilled in the family business. Even though he had good aim when it came to firearms, he hated hurting others. That ended up making him useless for nearly all jobs other than paperwork in his grandfather’s eyes. A sore sight and embarrassment that was to be hidden away and kept out of known family relations. Still, his grandfather found one other use for him.
He hated how he was also the best way to keep his siblings in line. Even if they enjoyed the work more, they couldn’t always do what was demanded of them. Either something out of their control went wrong, plans fell through, or something else.
So what could have possibly happened to make their grandfather call him up to the office? Would he be used as an example? Would he be given a job he wouldn’t want to do?
The small buildup of energy being drawn towards the center of his chest made the yellow animatronic tense up and finally knock. He took too much time. If he waited any longer, he would be shocked. In the past, it had been a basic device that provided controlled shocks, but his grandfather had made one special when he realized how much fear being able to feel it coming would bring Sun, and how much quicker it made him obey. If he was lucky, the shock would be released sooner and it would be less painful and quick. But the longer it was allowed to build up, the more it would hurt and the longer it would last. If he was good, and did what he had been told before it was released, the energy would be allowed to deplete back to his battery.
“Come in.” His grandfather’s voice called, sounding annoyed already.
Sun let out a shaky breath as the energy faded away and he opened the door, stepping into the large office where everything was designed and made to accommodate the very round form of the head of the family. His grandfather, the Don, Sleepy Moon, was sitting at his crescent shaped desk as he looked over a dark folder that had no indication of the contents on the outside. It could have been anything, but he didn’t dare to speak unless spoken to.
Eventually, his grandfather put the folder down and rested his arms on the desk. His large eyes looked over his grandson’s shaking form, as if calculating for something.
He held his simulated breath as he waited and tried to keep his body and rays from trembling. He couldn’t show weakness. Weakness was punished.
“Sun.”
“Yes, my Don?”
His eyes rolled and he motioned towards a chair in front of the desk. “You can call me Gramps, we are family after all. Did you forget again?”
Sun winced and sat down in the chair. “s-Sorry Gramps, I wanted to be respectful during work.”
His grandfather allowed it to pass as he picked up a different file and handed it over. So the summons were work related, great. “I have a job for you, and I expect you to actually be able to do this one.”
He carefully took the file and opened it, growing confused when he didn’t see any information on a person to research. Instead, it seemed to be a club. He didn’t recognize it, so it likely wasn’t in their territory. It didn’t look like the neutral grounds either. “I… I don’t understand?”
His grandfather leaned back in his chair and placed his hands on his stomach. “This is why I’ve kept you out of the public eye, my boy. You will be given an apartment and you will be working in this club. It is owned by Don Kill Code, and his sons, along with many other powerful targets, frequent it. They do not know that you are my family since it is only known that I have night model family members. You will use this to your advantage, but do not let them know or they will kill you.”
Sun did his best to avoid breaking the file as he tensed up. In what world could he possibly take on a mission to infiltrate the Nocturne crime family as his first one?! He would never be able to survive it. He was being sent on a suicide mission.
“You will not hold the name Sunrise Celestial while you are there.” His grandfather continued as if his world did not end. “You will be under the guise of Sunfall Starlet, hidden child of recently murdered Solstice Starlet. He was the parts dealer for the Nocturne family whom your brother Nexus killed last week. We disposed of Sunfall’s body already so it will be easy enough for you to take their place. All information you need will be in the file, along with the banking account that would have gone to Sunfall after their father died. That is how your apartment is paid for already.”
“g-Gramps, I don’t think I-”
His grandfather reached over to a remote and he felt the familiar sensation of the energy building up in his chest before it was released into a controlled shock. Even with it being on one of the lower settings it had been enough to make him scream and hunch over, shaking in the pain.
“You also cannot wear our standard jester clothing. Luckily, your brother also managed to grab some of Sunfall’s clothing and an emergency bag that had already been set up for emergencies. That paranoid bastard's preparation has only made your job easier. All you have to do is read the provided information of Solstice and not mix up your lives. Am I understood?”
Sun held back a pained whimper as he nodded. “Yes Gramps…”
“Good… Tonight, Moon will install the required technology so that I will be able to see and hear anything you do. I can’t rely on you to remember anything important.”
“Yes Gramps..” He repeated as a sense of dread washed over him. Every single one of his movements would be monitored. While it was of course necessary for the job, the yellow animatronic realized that if they weren’t added he would have had the opportunity to run away. To finally escape like his brothers always wanted for him. There would be no way to write any notes, or to ask for help. “w-What happens if I’m discovered?”
“The Nocturne family will likely torture you for information, scrap you while you are still aware, or possibly make an example of you. If that happens, I will have someone go to collect you.”
Collect his body more likely, if there was anything left of it. Sun didn’t want to take the job, but the way his grandfather’s hand hovered over the remote showed that he had no choice. He closed the file and nodded, resigned to his fate. “Thank you for allowing me to be of use to the family.” He said quietly.
The Don smiled and set the remote down. “It was about time I found something for you to do. Now, go read up on your role and wait for Moon to be ready for you. I’ll have someone drop you off once the procedure is finished. You may go now.”
“Yes Grandpa.” He said before he got up and left, file in hand.
He was going to die. His grandfather had finally gotten tired of him and was sending him out on a suicide mission, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to act right. He wasn’t like his brothers. He couldn’t do it. He would be found out almost immediately and tortured for information he didn’t know. Maybe they would try to ransom him to a grandfather who wouldn’t care.
Sun held back on expressing how he felt until he was in the privacy of his own room. The thought itself only brought him more despair because by the end of the night he wouldn’t even have that. He would never have privacy again for the rest of his life. The rest of his soon to be short life…
Once he closed the door, he locked it and made his way to his wardrobe, opening it and climbing into it so that he could hide behind the clothes. Only once the wardrobe was locked from the inside, a feature put in by his twin and little brother, did he allow himself to pull his knees to his chest as he broke down.
He didn’t know how long he had stayed there, but eventually Sun ran out of tears to cry. Instead he continued to stare blankly at the wooden wall in the dark.
He should have known that he would be gotten rid of eventually. Though he thought it would have been at least a quick shut off, or even a powerful shock that would have finally fried his chips. He should have known that he would never get a nice death.
The Nocturne family was far more cruel than his own. The Don himself was named Kill code for god’s sake. His eldest son was known for his cruelty while his other sons, the twins, were known cannibals. When he got caught, he had no doubt that there wouldn’t even be a body to retrieve. The idea that he would be scrapped alive and be forced to watch as his body was fed to a pair of cannibalistic animatronics would be in his nightmares for the rest of his life until it inevitably happened.
He started to laugh. It was almost hilarious how he thought any part of his life could be peaceful. After all, when had anything gone right for him? Sunrise Celestial, the most useless family member of any mafia boss ever! What did he even have that was any benefit to his family?! His eye for detail? His marksmanship? All useless when he couldn’t actually put it to use! Maybe it would be better if he just hid in the stupid wardrobe until the Don got tired of waiting and just fried his servers to get it over with!
That would at least be faster and less painful than anything the Nocturnes could do to him.
At least then his only regret would be his brothers finding his body.
That had always been the reason he could never do it himself. Because maybe if he died by the hands of their grandfather, they would be able to use the guilt of not being able to protect him to turn on the Don. He doubted they would do it if he just tore out his own wires or took a bullet to his chips.
A soft knock came from his door but he didn’t say anything. He didn’t want to come out from hiding. Whoever it was didn’t seem to take the hint though and came in anyway, closing the door carefully behind them before they went to lean against the side of the wardrobe behind him. Based on where the head landed, it was Nexus.
The two of them remained quiet for a while. The presence of his little brother both calmed him but also made him feel suffocated. He didn’t need to burden his little brother more than he already did. Nexus didn’t need his pathetic whimpers to plague his mind. Sun was the older brother. He should have been stronger.
“Gramps told us about the job…” His brother spoke quietly. “Moon wants to try to make it so the spyware will slowly break so that you can escape. He doesn’t even want to add it in but he was already threatened…”
“I-I’m going to die…” Sun whispered as he pressed his forehead against his knees harder.
“No, no…. We aren’t going to let you die. We’ll find a way to get you out of this. Maybe we could find a way to sabotage the shock module so it can break once you leave.”
“w-Would that work?” In the past when they had tried, he had just been punished harsher for the sabotage. If he was being monitored then it would be noticed if he was supposed to be shocked but then wasn’t. Would he be taken back home to have it repaired?
“We have to try. You can’t give up, Sunny…”
He wanted to. He really wanted to just give up… They tried to get away for so long and it never worked. How could him being sent into the belly of the beast change that?
“...s-Sunny, please, tell me you won’t give up on us…”
Sun pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes and held back a sob. “I-I w-won’t.”
“c-Can I come in?”
He didn’t want his little brother to see him at such a low point, but he didn’t want to upset him at the same time. Making the choice to do what was better for his brother, Sun unlocked the door.
Soon his little brother, a lanky moon model with dark purple colorations instead of blue, stepped into his wardrobe and pulled him into his arms. The yellow animatronic pressed his face into his brother’s chest and finally allowed his sobs to escape. The colder arms wrapped around him made him feel safe.
“It’s alright, brobro… I got you… You can let it out…”
“I-I’m s-scared…” He whimpered as he closed his eyes.
“I know…”
“I d-don’t want to d-do this…”
“I know… I tried suggesting sending M2 but…”
M2 would have been able to do the job so much better, so why was he the one being sent?! He really was a sacrifice! “He w-wants to kill me!”
“We won’t let him. You just have to trust us…”
Sun clung to his brother’s shirt as he sobbed without tears. For all he knew, it would be the last time he saw his little brother. It would be the last time he would be held kindly. He wanted Moon to be there too, but he would soon be forced to modify his body and take away what little autonomy he had. There would never be any comfort again.
“Do you… want to be awake when you’re taken there?” Nexus asked him quietly.
He shook his head with another sob. “j-Just do it.”
The night model apologized as he slowly reached for the back of Sun’s head, cradling his body and mumbling how it would all be alright. That they wouldn’t let him down.
The kind lies were the last thing he heard before he fell into a blissful state of nothingness.
