Devotee

Summary:

Stannis and Davos are not lovers. What they have is more complicated than that.

Kinktober Day 5 - Finger Sucking

Work Text:

Davos took no greater pleasure than in being his King’s Hand. The title was more than a badge or an office, it was the marrow of his purpose, the steady thrum beneath his ribs that made every breath feel earned. His wife’s gentle face, the laughter of his sons, the small comforts of hearth and home, these all slipped quietly into shadow at the barest grunt of approval from Stannis Baratheon. A single nod, a rare glance of acknowledgement, could sustain Davos for weeks. Pleasing Stannis had ceased to be duty alone; it had become the axis on which his world turned, the hidden fire in his blood. To serve was to live, and to fail was to be unmade.

Stannis was not a soft man. The rough-hewn joints missing from Davos’s left hand, cut away on Stannis’s own blade, remained a silent, constant testament to that truth. Yet even in the ache of those phantom fingers, Davos felt no resentment. If anything, that old punishment had hardened his devotion. It was proof, unassailable and grim, that his Lord, now his King, was fair even when he was merciless. Stannis demanded a price, but he paid in kind with justice, and Davos had offered the rest of himself freely. Each scar, each kneeling vow, each sleepless night beside the war table was another piece of himself surrendered, until there was nothing left that was not Stannis’s.

The court whispered of Stannis’s cold marriage, of Selyse’s sharp edges and her unforgiving gaze. Davos understood the truth of it. Selyse Florent did not seem an easy woman to love, nor a woman who expected to be loved tenderly. Stannis’s rumoured entanglement with the Red Woman, Melisandre, with her terrible beauty and her firelit eyes, was spoken of in hushed and fearful tones. Davos did not believe it was desire that led his King to her bed, but duty, strategy, perhaps some binding thread of magic he did not dare name. Stannis Baratheon was not a man to surrender to longing. Pride ran too deep in him for that. He’d not take a lover.

Lover. The word itself felt strange on Davos’s tongue whenever it arose in thought, like a foreign coin too smooth to trust. Most men did not love their lovers, nor did they make love in any sense that held weight or tenderness. Love seemed an afterthought, a decorative word to hide what was merely appetite. And yet there were attachments far stranger than lust alone. Davos loved Stannis, loved him as his King, certainly, but also as a man, as a hard, unyielding presence that anchored him in a world of shifting tides. His affection was quiet but consuming, the kind that lived between silences, in stolen glances, in the tightening of a jaw at an unspoken command. They were not lovers; the notion itself felt almost profane, too small a word for what pulsed between them. They did not share beds or whisper gentle promises. Davos lived to serve in whatever manner his King required, to endure even when Stannis’s demands were cruel, odd, or impossible. In the dim hours, when the campfires burned low and the wind keened against the tents, Davos sometimes thought that this, this wordless, demanding devotion, was its own kind of love, fiercer and deeper than any kiss could ever be.

The skies over the jagged cliffs of Dragonstone blazed with the last embers of sunset, a wash of rose and ember bleeding into the darkening sea. The light caught the black stone walls of the council chamber and set them glowing faintly, like banked coals ready to stir to life. The room was hushed except for the low sigh of the wind through the narrow windows and the distant crash of waves below. In that quiet, Davos knelt before his King, his knees pressing into the cold flagstones, the weight of Stannis Baratheon’s presence bearing down on him like a storm cloud.

Stannis loomed above him, broad-shouldered and iron-stiff, grunting in impatience, his brow furrowed in its familiar crease of irritation. His left hand closed around Davos’s jaw, fingers calloused from sword hilts, pressing just hard enough to command, never enough to bruise. His middle and ring fingers slid between Davos’s lips, forcing their way into the warm cavern of his mouth. His right hand gripped a fistful of Davos’s hair, not cruelly, but with a steady insistence, tilting his head farther back until Davos’s gaze caught the dim torchlight behind Stannis’s shoulders.

Stannis had never kissed him, had never crossed that line, and he did not cradle him as a lover might. Yet these small, almost ritualistic gestures of control seemed to give him a satisfaction deeper than any fleeting pleasure of the flesh. It was not about desire as most men knew it. It was about certainty, about the strange intimacy that grew in the spaces between command and obedience, trust and silence. It was distant enough that neither man had to name it, small enough to be ignored in the light of day, and yet in that twilight chamber, its weight pressed down heavier than the stone walls around them.

When one of Stannis’s fingers brushed the back of his throat, Davos gagged reflexively, a soft, wet sound breaking the stillness. Stannis’s eyes narrowed in mild disapproval, and his voice, low and rough, cut the air.

“Hush. I’ll hear no complaints,” he murmured, the gravel in his tone softened by the quiet hour. His hand shifted minutely against Davos’s scalp, the motion as much reassurance as command.

Davos exhaled through his nose, a small sigh of contentment escaping him despite himself. His tongue curled around the rough digits, tasting the salt and steel that clung to them, a trace of sea and iron. He looked up at Stannis with wide, unwavering eyes, the trust there as fierce as devotion, as unshakable as faith. He wanted something more, tenderness, passion, some deeper acknowledgement of the bond they shared. He would never speak it aloud. Words were too clumsy for what lived between them.

These quiet acts of submission were all he’d get. He gagged and moaned around Stannis’s fingers and when his face was inches from Stannis's hardened cock, they’d stop and go their separate ways, and pretend nothing had happened. Until Stannis wanted his Hand’s devotion affirmed again.
