Chapter Text
The air in the Great Kingdom's capital, Hanyang, was thick with the scent of pine and heavy silk, a stark contrast to the mountainous, brisk winds of the Goryeon Kingdom that Prince Leehan had left behind.
He stood stiffly in the outer hall of the Crown Prince’s residence, clad in the heavy, unfamiliar robes of the Great Kingdom’s consort. The fabric, a shimmering, jade-green satin embroidered with the double dragon crest felt more like a political cage than a garment of celebration.
Leehan was only nineteen, small and delicate, a porcelain doll presented as a peace offering. He knew his role: he was the seal on a decade-long treaty, a living guarantee of alliance. His heart hammered a desperate rhythm against his ribs, amplified by the intimidating silence of the palace guards who stood like statues carved from basalt.
Beside him, his only true solace and companion, Riwoo, fussed with the intricate loops of Leehan’s waistband. Riwoo, just a few years older, had been his personal attendant and closest confidante since childhood.
“Your Grace, please, breathe deeply,” Riwoo whispered, his eyes filled with familiar worry. He used the tender honorific reserved for their private moments. “The ceremony was flawless. The people cheered. You have performed your duty perfectly.”
Leehan, however, found no comfort in perfection. “I have not even met him, Riwoo. Not truly. Only a bow and an exchange of greetings at the gates. He is a stranger, yet tonight he is... my husband.” His voice was thin, a mere thread against the overwhelming sound of the court’s heavy doors closing behind them.
“He is Crown Prince Jaehyun, Your Highness,” Riwoo corrected gently, using the formal honorific now that they were near the inner chambers. “He is handsome, powerful, and respected. Any prince of Goryeon would be honored.”
But is he kind? Leehan wanted to ask. He kept the question caged. Kindness was irrelevant here. Power and progeny were the only currency.
A senior eunuch, with a voice like rustling paper, bowed low. “His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince, is awaiting His Highness, the Prince Consort, in the inner sleeping chambers.”
Leehan’s stomach twisted. There was no warmth in the summons, only command. He nodded once, a gesture that took all his strength.
“Wait here, Riwoo. Thank you.”
Riwoo’s face pinched with reluctance. “But, My Prince…”
“It is my duty now, Riwoo. Mine alone.”
Leehan walked down the long, silk lined corridor, the sound of his own heavy steps echoing his isolation. The chambers were vast and opulent, decorated in dark sandalwood and glimmering gold leaf, a chamber fit for a monarch, cold and majestic.
And there, standing by a screen embroidered with fierce tigers, was Crown Prince Jaehyun.
Jaehyun was taller than Leehan had anticipated, broad-shouldered beneath a robe of deep purple, the color of royalty. His face, seen in full light for the first time, was sculpted and severe: high cheekbones, a sharp jawline, and eyes that were heavy-lidded, dark, and utterly devoid of expression. He was, undeniably, devastatingly beautiful, a beauty that held the lethal allure of a sharp-edged sword.
Jaehyun didn't move as Leehan entered. He simply watched, his gaze sweeping over Leehan with a calculated coolness that felt less like admiration and more like assessment.
Leehan stopped several paces away and performed the deep, respectful bow required of him. “Your Royal Highness,” he murmured, his breath catching slightly.
Jaehyun finally moved, walking slowly toward him. The steps were measured, confident. He stopped right in front of Leehan, close enough that the clean, earthy scent of his skin and rich robes filled Leehan’s senses.
“Prince Leehan of Goryeon,” Jaehyun’s voice was a low baritone, clear and resonant, but it carried the weight of frost. “The alliance is sealed. Welcome to the Great Kingdom.”
The words were correct, formal, and utterly detached. There was no hint of the warmth, curiosity, or even lust that one might expect on a wedding night.
“I am honored to serve your noble family, My Lord,” Leehan replied, lifting his chin slightly. He tried to project the dignity his birth demanded, but his body was trembling.
Jaehyun’s eyes narrowed, not in anger, but in indifference. “Serve the kingdom. That is your purpose here. Do not mistake this union for sentiment. It is politics. A means to an end.” He reached out, his long fingers cool as they gripped Leehan's chin, tilting his face up. “You are the price Goryeon pays for our protection. Nothing more.”
The harshness of the words was a punch to Leehan’s chest. He felt his fragile hope, the tiny silly hope that his husband might find him at least tolerable shatter.
Jaehyun let go and turned away, removing his outer robe and tossing it onto a nearby chaise lounge. He stood now in a thin inner garment, his body lean, muscular, and intimidatingly perfect.
“The formalities are complete. The kingdom expects an heir. The duty begins now,” Jaehyun stated, his back still to Leehan.
It was a command, not an invitation.
Leehan swallowed hard, his face burning. He slowly began to remove the heavy outer layers of his own wedding attire, his hands shaking so much that the golden toggles felt impossible to undo.
When he finally stepped out of the heavy silk, he was left in a sheer, inner robe of white linen. He walked to the massive, curtained bed, his bare feet silent on the polished stone floor. Jaehyun was already there, pulling back the heavy, crimson curtains.
The bed was enormous, a luxurious nest prepared for a king, yet it felt like a cold, empty battlefield.
Jaehyun lay down first, stretching out on his side, bracing his weight on one elbow. He looked at Leehan, his expression still clinical.
Leehan crawled onto the mattress, his movements hesitant. He knelt for a moment, then lay down tentatively beside Jaehyun, keeping a respectable distance, the distance of a political alliance.
Jaehyun immediately bridged that distance. He didn't speak. He simply reached out and yanked Leehan closer, pulling him over the silk sheets until their bodies were pressed together, hip to hip. The sudden force startled a gasp out of Leehan.
“Do not be so fragile, Prince,” Jaehyun murmured, his breath warm against Leehan’s ear, yet the tone remained freezing. “We must be quick. I have matters to attend to tomorrow, and I require my rest.”
He was treating the act of consummation like a chore, a necessary item to be checked off a long list of royal duties. The realization was raw and cutting.
Jaehyun’s hand, large and firm, traveled down Leehan’s side, pushing the thin linen fabric away. He found the small, soft expanse of Leehan’s lower back and gripped it, guiding him closer.
“Turn.”
Leehan obeyed, trembling slightly as he shifted onto his back. He looked up at the silhouette of his husband, his beautiful, cruel husband, framed by the heavy bed curtains.
Jaehyun shifted again, kneeling slightly over Leehan. His eyes finally held something, but it was not affection; it was a hungry, possessive look, the look of a conqueror claiming new territory.
His mouth descended, but it was not a kiss of love or tenderness. It was a firm, bruising press against Leehan’s lips, a silent demand for submission. Leehan could taste the faint, expensive wine Jaehyun had been drinking. His heart began to pound a frantic, trapped rhythm in his throat.
Jaehyun pushed the kiss deeper, his tongue demanding entry. Leehan whimpered softly, a tiny, distressed sound, and hesitantly returned the pressure, wanting to show that he was willing, that he would not fail in his duty.
Jaehyun broke the contact abruptly, moving his attention elsewhere. He pulled Leehan's thin night-robe open, his movements efficient and utterly lacking in caress. His large, cool hand closed around Leehan’s sheathed length, administering a series of harsh, quick strokes, just enough to prepare the body for the next step, but not nearly enough for pleasure.
Leehan gasped, startled by the rough immediacy. His body, trained to respond to any stimulation, reacted involuntarily, causing a soft moan to escape his lips.
Jaehyun paused, his eyes still heavy. “Don’t pretend to enjoy it. It is merely necessary. Save the noise for when you carry my child.”
The words were a brutal slap, immediately extinguishing the spark of arousal Leehan felt. He fell silent, clenching his jaw, determined not to give Jaehyun any more sound.
Jaehyun shifted, his knee pressing firmly between Leehan’s thighs, forcing them apart. He found the soft entrance, already slick from nerves and the preliminary stimulation. There was no gentle exploration, no foreplay designed to ease the opening.
A sudden, sharp pressure made Leehan inhale sharply. Jaehyun was already pushing, hard and fast, without any warning.
The initial invasion was painful, a searing tear of discomfort that forced a choked cry past Leehan’s sealed lips. His hands instinctively clenched the silk sheets beneath him.
Jaehyun paused only slightly, bracing his weight on his forearms, his dark gaze locked on Leehan's face. “Do not resist. Do not shame Goryeon,” he commanded, his voice barely a breath.
The pain, combined with the humiliation of the cold, impersonal command, made tears prick Leehan's eyes. He felt his muscles clench tightly around the sudden, unwelcome intrusion. He was a prisoner in his own body.
Jaehyun ignored the resistance, thrusting forward with a renewed, deep, and utterly unforgiving power. The motion was deep, hitting a specific, shocking point that momentarily drove the air from Leehan's lungs.
The act that followed was brutally efficient. Jaehyun’s rhythm was quick and heavy, a measured pounding devoid of any tenderness. Leehan was a trembling vessel beneath him, his body absorbing the weight and force of his much larger husband.
Leehan squeezed his eyes shut, trying to retreat into himself, to pretend he was not there. The physical reality of the sensation was overwhelming: the shocking heat, the depth of the penetration, the metallic smell of arousal and raw linen, and the unbearable, icy weight of the man above him.
He was being claimed, not loved. He was a state property being processed.
Jaehyun continued his relentless pace. He was silent, his own pleasure if he felt any masked by his severe expression. His muscles flexed with each deep drive, displaying his strength and dominance.
The intensity of the feeling mounted, mixing discomfort and a desperate, shameful physical reaction. Leehan’s legs began to tremble uncontrollably, wrapped around Jaehyun's waist in an unwilling embrace.
Suddenly, Jaehyun increased the depth and speed of his thrusts one last time, an overwhelming, primal drive that caused Leehan to arch his back and let out a soft, helpless moan.
With a final shattering surge, Jaehyun stiffened a quiet guttural noise escaping his throat as he emptied his seed deep inside Leehan’s trembling core.
It was over in what felt like less than ten minutes.
Jaehyun did not linger. He withdrew almost immediately, his movement quick and clean. He shifted to the side of the bed, his back to Leehan, who was left sprawled on the sheets, his core aching and slick with the stark evidence of the political alliance.
Silence descended upon the chamber, heavy and suffocating. Leehan remained motionless, the sting of tears still behind his eyelids. He felt profoundly violated, not by the act itself, but by the cold, dismissive manner in which it had been performed.
After a long moment, Jaehyun spoke, his voice already distant, bordering on sleep.
“You will remain here for the night. Do not disturb me, Prince. And do not presume to speak to me again until the sun is high and the servants are stirring. Rest.”
He shifted slightly pulling a heavy silk blanket over himself, presenting a final impenetrable barrier to Leehan.
Leehan was left staring up at the canopy of the bed his body thrumming with residual shock and the cold weight of his failure. He hadn't failed his Goryeon family; he had secured the alliance. But he had failed himself. He had somehow foolishly hoped for a touch of warmth.
He carefully shifted, turning onto his side facing the expanse of his powerful husband's broad, retreating back. The scent of Jaehyun’s powerful and indifferent surrounded him.
He is cold. He is cruel. He is my duty, Leehan repeated in his mind trying to cauterize the fresh gaping wound in his heart.
He felt the deep agonizing realization settle over him: the man who had just taken his body, the man he was now bound to, the man who held the key to his entire future felt nothing for him but polite disdain.
Yet, despite the cruelty, despite the humiliation, as Leehan watched the rise and fall of Jaehyun’s strong back in the moonlight filtering through the silk curtains, a strange terrifying new feeling began to bloom in the empty cavity of his chest.
It was not hatred. It was a searing, desperate, illogical ache of desire.
Leehan knew he was going to fall for his Serpent, and he knew it would destroy him.
