Chapter Text

SYDNEY:

I am still so confused about what happened yesterday.

Exploded someone’s head, and then seeing a creepy man made of black fog with a messed-up face? I really am not normal. I’m far from normal.

Thanks, Dad.

It’s the day after homecoming and me killing Brad. I’m at Dina’s house, surprisingly. I guess she wanted to talk about what happened, which I should probably tell her the truth.

“Like how did that fucking happen?” Dina finally snaps me out of la-la land.

“Uh- Y-yeah, it's crazy. His head just...exploded.” I say.

“I wonder how...” Dina thinks.

Silence.

“I- I know how.”

“What?” Dina says like she didn’t hear me, even though she did.

“I-It was me. And yeah, that's some crazy shit to believe, but it’s true.” I start to get even more anxiety that's running throughout my body. “I think my dad had powers, telekinesis, and I... I got them from him, and he was just exposing me, and I- I didn’t mean too, it was an accident-”

“Syd.” Dina cuts me off.

“Let me show you so you don’t think I’m crazy.” I say. “Even though I am.”

“O-kay.” Dina says hesitantly.

“Shit talk me.” I tell her.

“What? No!” Dina argued.

“No, it’s fine Dina, it triggers it.” I explain.

Dina thinks about it for a second, but eventually, she speaks.

“You never tell me what’s going on. It makes me feel like I don’t matter. You keep shutting me out like I’m some stranger. And you're really stubborn sometimes, and it gets really annoying.” Dina says slowly, still thinking about what to say.

But it's enough for Syd’s powers to show up a bit, because she sees Dina’s face go into shock. Syd doesn’t know what she did though, because as she turned around, nothing was floating, moving weird, or doing anything unnatural.

“Oh my god, Syd.” Dina whispers.

“Did it work?” I ask.

“Yes, oh my gosh, you made the pillows float!” Dina exclaimed.

“It did?” I’m shocked that it actually worked. But now I must decide if I tell her about Brad.

Not today. She only just learnt that I have powers.

“Yes, Syd.” Dina just looks at me with amazement, which makes me smile.

“How long have you had...these powers for?” She asks.

“I think...I actually can’t remember, but it’s not like I’ve had it for years.” I say truthfully.

“Holy shit, Syd. H- How'd you even get these?!” Dina looks like she just realized some crazy shit, which of course, she has.

I sigh, “That's what I’ve been trying to figure out.”

“Oh.” Dina breathes.

Theres a bit of silence, so I use it to process that I actually just told Dina my second deepest, darkest secret.

“Welp! You know what this calls for!” Dina exclaims, standing up and grabbing my hand to take me with her.

“Dina- wait, what? Slow down, where are we going?” I yell at her accidentally.

“Going to celebrate!” She says with full confidence.

“But no one can know about it, Dina, it’s meant to be a secret!” I tell her.

“I know that, silly, what I mean is we have to do something, and that something doesn’t have to be public.” She explains.

I sigh, of course she would want to celebrate.

As I see that me and Dina are approaching the diner, I freak out a little bit.

“Dina, the diner? All you’re going to do in there is talk and talk and talk about it when other people could eavesdrop!” I whisper-scream.

“Calm down, I promise not to talk about it. Maybe just a few smirks, though.” Dina says, which shit; my stomach would flip if she gave me multiple smirks, even if it’s not for that reason.

I groan at Dina, which she ignores and continues to pull me to the diner.

The doorbell rings as the door swings open, and we walk to our usual seats.

I grab the menu and open it up, already knowing what I want to get, but just checking out the special anyway.

I notice Dina adjusts her posture and that she’s smiling at the fact I have powers, and shit, she wasn’t kidding about those smirks. I quickly look back at the menu.

I look up again because the waiter arrives and see out the corner of my eye that Dina is still looking at me, but this time with a different look in her eyes, and I can tell she’s not teasing me anymore.

I kind of zone out for a couple of seconds, trying to think of what that look might of meant, and when I snap back into reality, I’ve already ordered and now I’m staring directly at Dina.

I quickly look away. “You okay?” She asks.

“Y-yeah, sorry, I kind of... zoned out.” I offer. She smirks at me again, so I just roll my eyes, which causes her to giggle. I can’t help but smile.
