Chapter Text
This was something he needed to do, he knew that. An apartment was safe, safer than he'd ever be on the street. But still, standing outside the apartment building, he was second guessing it all. He hasn't interacted with regular people for a long time, longer than he can even remember. Despite that he's about to be living with 3 total strangers. Every fiber of his being was telling him to run, terrified of messing it all up. One slip up and he's back on the streets. Closer to him.
Virgil checked his watch. Fuck. It's 9:30pm. He's been outside for almost an hour. Time never slows, and in the face of hesitation it only ever speeds up. He can't think about it anymore, hesitation isn't something he can afford. He moves his body before his mind has the chance to think of the consequences. He enters the building, finding his apartment number. It's now or never, he hesitates before knocking. It's louder than he meant it, leaving him cringing with embarrassment. 'Nevermind this is a bad idea', he thought, beginning to turn away.
Before he has the chance the door flings open and he's greeted with a bright smile. The man before him was smaller than him, with light brown hair and glasses. The blue polo and light grey cardigan was brighter than he'd seen anyone wear before. He couldn't tell if that said anything about the man before him, or more so Virgil himself. Probably the latter. It's been a long time since he's been outside during the day, though for good reason. Daylight and vampires don't mix very well.
"Hey there, kiddo! You must be Virgil, our new housemate," despite standing in one spot, you could see the bounce in the other man's step.
"Uh, yeah, I am. Nice to meet you," Virgil spoke meekly, unable to bring up any confidence in his voice despite the bubbly kindness in the man before him.
"Nice to meet you too! I'm Patton." He held out his hand for a handshake. It would be rude to refuse, but he couldn't bring himself to reciprocate. It was nonsensical but such a simple gesture was nerve wracking. He'd find a way to mess it up somehow, he new that, so instead he sunk deeper into the comfort of his jacket. It was subtle the way his smile fell for a moment, returning almost instantly. It made him feel bad, but it was a feeling he had grown accustomed to after centuries.
"Okay, well why don't I show you to your room," he let Virgil in, closing the door behind him. Past the lounge room, Patton walked him down to the furthest room in the hallway, opening the door. The room was small, but not enough to trigger his claustraphobia. It was bland-looking with white walls, a bed, an empty bookcase and a black desk. It was more comfortable than anything he's had in a long time, only without the looming figure judging his every move. Virgil set his bag by the doorway and sat on the edge of his bed.
"Logan's going to be working late tonight so unfortunately you won't meet him until tomorrow," Patton explained. It worried him, he needed to feed tonight and the odds of running into one of his roommates afterwards just increased. They couldn't know.
"Thanks, Patton. I think I'm just going to go to bed."
"Okay kiddo, I'm here if you need anything." Patton shut his door before leaving.
It flooded him all at once, that familiar dread. Everything he did wrong, all the minor details of how he made a fool of himself. He couldn't help the agonising groan that came out of him. It was all too much. He face planted onto his bed in hope that the minor suffocation would drown out his thoughts. The pain would go away eventually, he only hoped it was sooner rather than later.
He left early to feed in hope it would help him avoid his new apparent night owl roommate. It went shockingly well and a breath of relief left him as he made it back to his room with no trouble. Only the relief didn't last long as he's shocked out of his thoughts by a loud crash coming from the kitchen.
Virgil's mind raced with possibilities. Had Deceit found him? How? He was so careful to cover his tracks. He had to check, it could be nothing. It had to be nothing. He left his room silently, cautiously making his way towards the kitchen. An unfamiliar figure was kneeled on the ground picking up what looked like the remains of a broken glass. It wasn't Deceit, and it couldn't be one of his men, they would have never made a mistake like this. It had to be Logan.
"Patton, is that you?" The man called out.
"I'm your new roommate. Virgil. I heard the shatter, was just checking everything was okay." The other man reached for the light switch, turning it on. Virgil squinted, briefly bothered by the sudden light.
"That's better, my apologies if I woke you. It's a pleasure to meet you, I'm Logan." He didn't go for the handshake like patton did, instead going for a nod to greet him, before placing the glass in the bin.
"I'm going to bed, I'll be glad to chat more in the morning." He put his hands in the pockets of his pants before walking quickly to his room, leaving Virgil alone in the bright kitchen.
He turned the light off then went back to his own room. Laying down, he took a moment to collect his thoughts. Logan and Patton. He's barely interacted with the two but they're certainly interesting. Patton's seems nice, maybe even too nice. That sort of kindness is dangerous, it's either fake or exploitable. It's concerning to say the least but he doesn't know enough to dwell on the possible dangers, not yet. Logan on the other hand, he got even less off of. He can't quite place it but something is off about him. His mind races with possibilities, it starts leading Virgil into a dark place into his mind, a dangerous one. He feels the darkness around him, trying to consume him. Quickly he grabs his headphones, putting on his favourite playlist. Vampire's don't sleep but he can rest his mind. So with music playing Virgil lays on his bed, safe and comfortable enough to truly rest. It's felt like centuries since he's last been this comfortable. It probably has.
