Work Text:
How did I get myself in this situation? Wednesday wondered.
She was on her bed, a king size. It would have been overkill for her small frame, but it was being put to full use with an additional two bodies.
Wednesday laid on one side of the bed, arms crossed over her chest, and Enid was asleep on the other side. That wasn’t too unusual at this point, though; Enid had stayed with her the previous summer as well.
No, the unusual part was Agnes, nestled peacefully between the two.
Looking back, Wednesday wondered how she went from vowing to never have a lover to having two girlfriends that she adored…
When Wednesday saw Enid for the first time, her thoughts were full of disdain.
The room was entirely too colorful, the girl was entirely too energetic, and, overall, Wednesday simply could not see how she could ever get along with Enid.
Over the next few days, as Wednesday settled in and had the displeasure of interacting with Enid more, her opinion of the girl didn’t budge.
They were roommates, and that was all. Not even friends. They would never be anything more.
Wednesday was wrong.
Enid had grown on her. A lot. The initial hatred for the girl’s personality had slowly morphed into indifference, and then enjoyment, and then, somehow, something much more.
“You’re looking quite beautiful today, Wednesday,” Enid said as she packed her bags for summer break.
Wednesday gave her a deadpan look. It seemed cold, but Enid could see the hint of warmth in her eyes. Also, if anybody else had said that, they’d be dead on the spot.
“You’ve said that every day for the past three weeks,” Wednesday replied.
“And it’s been true every single time,” Enid replied, kissing her.
Enid’s kisses had a way of making Wednesday weak. Every time, she would melt and get lost in them, this one being no exception.
After breaking the kiss, Enid sighed. “I’ll miss you.”
“The offer to stay with my family is always open,” Wednesday pointed out.
Enid nodded. “I know. My parents wouldn’t like it though.”
They exited the dorm, making their way down to the front gates of the school.
Seeing her parents waiting for her, Enid sighed. “I’ll miss you, Wends,” she said, her smile a touch less radiant than usual.
“I will miss you as well,” Wednesday said, spotting her own parents.
They stared at each other, eye to eye, for a long moment. Words passed between them, communicated without sound.
Then, reluctantly, they bid each other farewell. They would see each other again, but for now, they went their separate ways.
Wednesday would never forget when, a few weeks later, Enid had shown up at her front door absolutely drenched.
“What are you doing here?” Wednesday asked as she quickly ushered Enid inside.
Through clattering teeth, Enid responded, ”I c-couldn’t put up…with my mom anymore. You s-said the offer…is always open, right?”
“Of course,” Wednesday assured her. “Ideally, you wouldn’t have walked through pouring rain to get here.”
Wednesday brought her girlfriend up to her room. “Take a shower. Get warm,” she commanded, pushing Enid towards the bathroom.
A bit later, Enid emerged from the bathroom, back to her cheerful self. Wednesday, meanwhile, was at her typewriter.
“Hey,” Enid greeted, wrapping her arms around her girlfriend.
Wednesday didn’t look up at her, but her fingers did pause on the keys. “What do you want?” she asked.
“You,” Enid answered.
“You know that’s not specific enough,” Wednesday said.
“I want your attention,” Enid elaborated.
“You have my attention.”
Enid let out an exasperated sigh. “I want your undivided attention. On the bed, preferably.”
“Needy,” Wednesday said. She wiggled out of Enid’s hold and stood up. “You’re going to have my attention the entire summer," she pointed out.
“I know,” Enid replied as they made their way to the bed. “Might as well start early!”
“Why do I put up with your pestering?” Wednesday asked as she sat down on the bed.
Enid put her arms around Wednesday again. “Because you love me,” she answered with a cheerful smugness.
Wednesday did not have an argument against that, as it was completely true. So, she decided to just relax into Enid’s hold.
“This is going to be a fun summer,” Enid predicted happily.
And she was right. Hikes through the forest, trips into the city, quiet evenings, and more, all spent together, made up three blissful months of summer vacation.
Although she wouldn’t admit it, it was the best summer Wednesday had ever had. And Enid knew it.
After the pleasant summer, it was back to Nevermore for Wednesday and Enid.
The beginning of the next schoolyear was fairly mundane. The most significant developments were a principal entirely too energetic for Wednesday’s tastes, and a werewolf hitting on Enid who couldn’t seem to take “No” or “I have a girlfriend” or “She’s my girlfriend, so back off unless you’d like a knife in the heart” for an answer.
Then, Agnes happened.
While Wednesday’s introduction to Enid had been fairly normal, meeting Agnes was anything but normal.
Putting Enid’s life in danger was certainly a way to make an impression, she would give her that. Still, it quickly became clear that Agnes was nothing more than a rabid fangirl trying to get Wednesday’s attention.
Her first impression of Enid had been wrong, but this redhead stalker wouldn’t grow on her in the same way. There was simply no chance.
Right?
Wednesday was wrong. Again.
Agnes had, in fact, grown on her. Even more surprising, though, was how the stalker had grown on Enid.
“You looked…happy, dancing with Agnes last night,” Wednesday said the day after the gala. “I thought you hated her.”
“I did,” Enid replied. “She’s…grown on me, though.”
“It seems like she’s grown on you significantly, based on how you were looking at her,” Wednesday said.
Enid’s face rapidly reddened.
“I-I have no clue w-what you’re talking about…” Enid stuttered.
“Enid,” Wednesday said, her tone commanding. “Be honest.”
Enid blinked a few times, nervous, and then it all came spilling out.
“Okay, I thought she was just a psycho stalker-murderer at first, but then we started getting along better, and she’s like so cute and I think I totally have a crush on her, even though I’m in love with you too so I really shouldn’t, and it’s all just so confusing!”
The only sound after that was Enid’s heavy breathing. Wednesday stared at her, silent, for several seconds that felt agonizing.
Finally, Wednesday broke the silence: “I have no issue with you having a crush on Agnes.”
Enid exhaled in relief. “Really?”
“Really,” Wednesday confirmed. “And I don’t think Agnes does, either.”
Enid looked confused for a second. Then, her expression shifted as she understood. “Show yourself, Agnes,” she said to the room, a slightly embarrassed smile on her face.
Slowly, Agnes appeared. She was dressed in a sweater and jeans, her hair down, and she was just as red as Enid.
“Hi,” she squeaked.
“Hey,” Enid greeted.
Agnes hesitated, then asked, “Did you really…mean all of that?”
Enid nodded, stepping closer. “I meant every word, you little psycho.”
Agnes looked down nervously. “W-well, I…have a c-crush on you too…” she stammered out.
Enid smiled, then turned to Wednesday. “Can I…kiss her?” she asked.
Wednesday felt…some kind of emotion. Not jealousy, but something else…
“Go ahead,” she replied.
She watched as Enid kissed Agnes, brief and light. The two looked into each other’s eyes for a few seconds, and then Agnes’ attention turned to Wednesday.
“I’m surprised you let this happen,” Agnes said. “I thought you would’ve wanted to keep the wolf for yourself.”
Wednesday stood up and walked over to Agnes. “My intentions are…not entirely selfless,” she said.
Suddenly, Wednesday’s arms were around the back of Agnes’ neck. Before the girl could question it, Wednesday pulled her into a kiss.
Agnes’ lips were exceptionally soft. While Enid had been light and brief, Wednesday took her time, insistent with the kiss. After several long seconds, Wednesday pulled back.
Agnes was unable to speak, trying to process getting kissed by her two favorite people in quick succession.
“So…are all three of us dating now?” Agnes asked, breathless.
Wednesday nodded. “You are our girlfriend, and we are yours.”
Slowly, Agnes grinned. “I love you both.”
Wednesday and Enid looked at each other, then back at Agnes. “We love you too.”
Over the next few weeks, the three girls settled into their new relationship.
Agnes began spending more nights in Wednesday and Enid’s room than her own. At some point, Agnes’ belongings got into the room, and she was their permanent roommate.
One day, they were walking through the courtyard, hand in hand and hand in hand, when Bruno stepped in front of them.
“Hey, Enid,” he said.
“Bruno,” Enid greeted, failing to even fake a smile.
“Got another girlfriend?” he asked, his tone mocking.
“Yeah, I do,” Enid answered.
Bruno laughed. “What, one wasn’t enough?”
“Two is better. It’s none of your business, anyways,” Enid answered.
“You know, if you were with me, then you wouldn’t need anyone else,” Bruno said with an arrogant smirk.
“You’re funny,” Enid replied, her expression indicating the opposite.
“Even if you don’t want to be with me, I thought your standards were higher. Are you deluding yourself into thinking you actually want her, or are you just pitying her?” Bruno asked.
Enid went from irritated to angry instantly. She stepped forward, claws extending. “How dare you-“
Wednesday put her arm out, stopping Enid from attacking him. “No use getting in trouble like this,” she said. “He’s speaking nonsense, and you know that.”
“Am I?” Bruno questioned. “She doesn’t belong anywhere. That should be clear as day to you, Wednesday.”
Wednesday’s attention turned back to Bruno. She tensed slightly, trying to control herself.
“You know I’m right,” Bruno continued, further provoking Wednesday. “Why can’t you just admi-“
Wednesday suddenly burst forward, grabbing him by the collar. “You are the one who doesn’t belong,” she said as Bruno grunted in surprise.
Bruno struggled, trying to escape her hold. “Really? I’m not a weirdo like her!” Bruno argued.
Wednesday tightened her grip. “No, you’re worse. We love Agnes for the person she’s not ashamed to be, oddities and all. You hurt others to feel better about yourself. No one truly loves you, because you’re a stereotypical bully hiding under a mask of fake confidence.”
Bruno tried his best to appear unfazed, but Wednesday could tell the words cut deep.
“Now, if you ever bother either of my girlfriends again, you will find a knife in your heart. Do not test me,” she threatened. “Understand?”
“Y-yes,” Bruno stuttered out.
Wednesday released him, and Bruno stumbled away. A small smile appeared on Wednesday's face, clearly satisfied with the encounter.
“Wow, you really got him good,” Enid said, smiling herself.
Wednesday nodded slightly. Then, she turned to Agnes. “Are you okay?” she asked.
Agnes hesitated for just a moment, then stepped forward and hugged Wednesday tightly. “Thank you,” she whispered.
Wednesday hugged her back. “You’re welcome.”
Before the girls knew it, the end of the schoolyear was once again upon them.
“Do you two have any plans for the summer?” Agnes asked as she packed her suitcase.
“I’m staying with Wednesday, like I did last summer,” Enid told her.
“That sounds amazing,” Agnes said with a sigh. “I wish I could too…”
“You can, there’s more than enough space at the estate,” Wednesday told her.
Agnes thought for a few seconds, then spoke again: “My father wouldn’t let me. He’s still trying to convince himself that he actually cares about me more than his normie girlfriend.”
Agnes found herself in a tight embrace. “I’m sorry,” Enid said. “I know what that feels like.”
Agnes’ phone buzzed in her pocket. Pulling it out, she looked at it for a second and then turned to the front gates of the school. Her girlfriends’ eyes followed, landing on a man looking at Agnes expectantly.
“That’s my dad,” Agnes sighed.
“Aw…” Enid said, disappointed.
Agnes kissed Wednesday on the cheek, then rose on her tiptoes to do the same to Enid.
Finally, she picked up her bags. “Bye,” she said, a sadness in her voice.
“Goodbye,” Wednesday said in return.
“Bye, Agnes,” Enid said. “We’ll miss you!”
Agnes walked towards the gates, stopping halfway to turn and blow another kiss to her girlfriends. Wednesday and Enid both reciprocated the action.
Finally, Agnes reached her father. They exchanged a few words that her girlfriends couldn’t hear, and then they left the school. As Agnes left their view, Enid let out a sigh.
“When are your parents getting here, Wends?” Enid asked.
“They said they would be slightly late,” Wednesday answered.
The two of them settled into a comfortable silence, looking out at the crowd of students saying their goodbyes and waiting for their parents.
“It’s been quite a year, hasn’t it?” Enid finally said.
“Indeed,” Wednesday replied. “I wasn't expecting to have another girlfriend by the end of it.”
“I mean, you weren’t expecting the first one either,” Enid pointed out.
“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me,” Wednesday replied, eliciting a laugh from Enid.
They continued talking for a few minutes, the comfortable idle chatter of a long-running relationship.
“Yeah, and-“
Enid suddenly stopped talking, her nose twitching.
“Enid?” Wednesday asked. “What is it?”
“Is that…” Enid began, uncertain, ”…Agnes?”
Sure enough, the girl appeared, standing just a few feet away from them.
“Thought you would take longer to notice me,” she said, her smile bashful.
“My werewolf senses are too sharp for that, especially when you’re wearing my perfume,” Enid replied. “What are you doing back here?”
“I…I couldn’t go back to my family,” Agnes answered. “They don’t care about me, but you do. You two…you make me feel visible. You see me for who I am.”
By the time Agnes finished speaking, tears had formed in her eyes. She stepped forward, hugging both Wednesday and Enid.
“I love you,” Agnes said. “I love both of you so much.”
“I love you too, Agnes,” Enid said, her own eyes misty.
“As do I,” Wednesday said.
Enid gave Wednesday a look. “Wednesday,” she scolded, ”Say it properly.”
Wednesday rolled her eyes, but obeyed and said, ”I love you, Agnes.”
The redhead released her girlfriends, laughing despite the tears in her eyes. Enid joined her, and the sides of Wednesday’s mouth were slightly higher than usual.
Then, Wednesday caught sight of something behind Agnes. “Oh look, my parents finally decided to show up,” she said.
The Addams’ black car came to a stop, and Morticia, Gomez, and Lurch stepped out. The girls began walking to them as Gomez waved excitedly.
“Who is this?” Gomez asked as they got to the car. “A new girlfriend staying with us?”
“Yes, Father,” Wednesday answered.
The girl in question greeted him, “I’m Agnes DeMille, nice to meet you.”
“The pleasure is ours,” Gomez said, heartily shaking her hand.
One after the other, the girls handed their bags to Lurch before getting in the car. They were in the middle row, Agnes sandwiched between Wednesday and Enid. Gomez and Pugsley were behind them, and Morticia was in the front.
The trunk closed, and Lurch made his way to the driver’s seat. Soon, the car was moving, driving away from Nevermore.
“So, how did the three of you meet?” Morticia asked. “I meant to ask after the gala, but things were…rather hectic.”
“I tried to kill Enid to get Wednesday’s attention,” Agnes replied straightforwardly.
Gomez laughed. “It’s like she’s an Addams already! You’ve found a good one, my little scorpion.”
Agnes grinned. She was already holding Enid’s hand, and her other hand now found Wednesday’s.
Without hesitation, Wednesday interlaced their fingers with the precision of a surgeon. She didn’t smile, but there was a sort of tenderness in her eyes as she looked at Agnes.
Not much later, Enid and Agnes were both asleep. Enid’s head was lolled back, mouth open, while Agnes was more graceful in her slumber. Wednesday, meanwhile, looked out the window at the rolling fields passing by.
About an hour later they arrived at their destination, and Agnes was in awe.
“This place is huge,” she said, taking in the sheer scale of the Addams Estate.
“It is,” Enid agreed. “I got lost the first day I was here.”
They got out of the car and walked into the mansion. The foyer was gorgeous, with dark wood floors, stairs leading up on both sides, and an ornate chandelier above.
“Dinner will be at six,” Morticia told them. “The estate is yours to explore.”
The girls made their way up to Wednesday’s room. While Morticia had said they were free to explore the estate, they had other ideas.
“How do we feel about just staying here and doing nothing the rest of the afternoon?” Enid asked, flopping onto the bed.
“Sounds wonderful,” Agnes said, joining her and wiggling into her hold.
Wednesday, meanwhile, finished unpacking her typewriter. “I’m not opposed to it,” she said. “I’d like some writing time.”
So, that was how they spent their afternoon: Enid and Agnes watching videos on the former’s phone, while Wednesday typed away at her desk. After about an hour, Wednesday joined them, ignoring the video playing as she toyed with Agnes’ hair.
At six, there was a knock at the door. “Dinner!” Pugsley yelled, muffled by the thick wood.
Dinner was relatively uneventful, just Wednesday’s parents asking the kids about how their schoolyear had been.
“Do you guys want to watch a movie?” Enid asked once they were back in Wednesday’s room.
Agnes nodded enthusiastically, while Wednesday replied, ”I wouldn’t mind.”
“Great!” Enid said. “We should shower first, though.”
“I’m going first!” Agnes exclaimed, springing off the bed. She made her way into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.
“She’s so cute,” Enid commented.
“She is,” Wednesday agreed.
Then, Enid said, “You are too.”
Wednesday gave her a death stare. “I’d prefer any other adjective.”
“Nope, you’re cute,” Enid said. “You’re so…tiny!”
“And you seem to have a death wish.”
“You like me too much to kill me,” Enid said, wrapping her arms around the smaller girl. Unfortunately, she was right.
A bit later, the bathroom door opened, and Agnes’ footsteps could be heard moving across the room towards the closet. After a minute of rustling, Agnes emerged from the closet visible, wearing a black t-shirt and shorts. Wednesday’s clothes.
The owner in question narrowed her eyes at Agnes. “I thought you were done imitating me,” she said.
“I am, but this isn’t imitation,” Agnes replied. “I’m stealing your clothes because we’re dating.”
Enid laughed, while Wednesday let out an exasperated sigh.
“My turn!” Enid said, disappearing into the bathroom to take a shower.
Once all three of the girls had showered, they sat down on the couch and watched a movie. Horror, much to Enid’s dismay.
“Ah!” Enid yelped at the first scare of the movie. She buried herself in Wednesday’s shoulder, while Agnes just leaned towards the screen, captivated.
Just less than two hours later, the movie concluded, and Agnes’ blinks were growing visibly heavy.
“You look sleepy, Agnes,” Enid observed. “Would you like to go to bed?”
Agnes nodded. “Can you carry me?” she asked hopefully.
“Of course!” Enid said with a grin. She easily picked Agnes up off the couch, bridal carrying her to the bed.
After dropping Agnes off, Enid turned her attention back to Wednesday. “Would you like to be carried as well?” she asked, fully knowing what the answer would be.
“Absolutely not.”
Enid considered her options for about half a second before moving to pick up her girlfriend. As she approached, Wednesday warned, ”Enid, do not-“
Her protests fell on deaf ears as she was picked up, carried, and dropped next to Agnes. Wednesday gave Enid a death glare, while her girlfriends laughed.
Enid turned the lights off, then joined her girlfriends on the bed. Agnes was in the middle of the bed, with Wednesday on her right and Enid on her left.
The room was still dimly lit by the moonlight coming through the windows, allowing Wednesday to see Enid wrap her arms around Agnes. While Wednesday wouldn’t compromise her vampire-like sleeping position, she did subtly move to be closer to her girlfriends.
“Good night, I love you both,” Agnes whispered to them.
Enid replied softly, ”Good night, Agnes.”
“May nightmares haunt your sleep,” Wednesday said.
With that, the three of them settled into the comfort of the bed. One by one, they drifted into sleep…
So now, Wednesday was here: laying awake in bed, looking up at the ceiling as the soft light of the sunrise streamed in through the windows. The room was quiet, her girlfriends’ relaxed breathing the only sound reaching her ears.
Suddenly, she felt Agnes’ arms wrap around her. Looking at the girl, still peacefully asleep, Wednesday’s mouth curved into something that was almost a smile.
Wednesday turned her head to look at the clock and saw that it read 5:53. Normally, Wednesday would be getting up in just a few minutes. In that moment, though, she just moved closer to Agnes.
Maybe she didn't have to be so rigid. She had already broken so many of her “rules” to get here, what was a few more?
Wednesday turned onto her side, putting her arms around Agnes. Although she didn’t open her eyes, Agnes smiled.
“Love you,” Agnes whispered.
The words settled over them as Wednesday took a few deep breaths. Then, she replied, “I love you too.”
Wednesday closed her eyes, not a care in the world besides her girlfriends. She had once thought that she would never want love. Now, though? She wanted nothing more.
Finally, she drifted back to sleep, Agnes in her arms and Enid not much further.
With the two of them at her side, Wednesday was at peace.
