Work Text:
Music filled the car, low but present, the kind that blended into the background instead of demanding attention. The road stretched ahead, long and uneven and rough. The smooth pavement having given up a while ago to weather, or maybe just not built well enough.
Katsuki drove while Izuku sat in the passenger seat, elbow propped up against the window, cheek resting against his palm. The glass was cool against his skin, a small relief from the warmth trapped inside the car.
Outside, everything passed in a blur.
Trees. Rocks. The occasional slope that dipped too far down for comfort. Bits of grass that seemed to glow under the late afternoon sun. It all moved too fast to properly take in, like flipping through pages of a book without reading a single word, like skimming through a list but realising too late you forgot something. An occurrence Izuku would firmly deny ever happening.
Izuku blinked slowly.
“…Is this even a road anymore?”
Katsuki didn’t look at him. His hands stayed firm on the wheel.
“Tch. It’s fine.” Katsuki grumbled, back aching after sitting for so long.
“It’s not paved.”
“It’s still a path.”
“…It’s a dirt path.” Izuku corrected
“Same thing.”
Izuku hummed, not convinced in the slightest. The car bounced slightly over a bump, and he grabbed onto the edge of his seat, a small laugh escaping him. Katsuki clicked his tongue.
“Stop reacting to every little thing.”
“I’m not, it just surprised me!”
“You gasp at speed bumps.”
“They’re aggressive sometimes!” Or maybe Katsuki was just driving too fast, but, you know.
Katsuki glanced at him for a split second, scarlet eyes meeting ruffled curls, then looked back at the road.
“…You’re annoying.”
Izuku smiled.
The silence that followed wasn’t awkward, more soft than anything. It settled comfortably between them, filled only by the soft hum of the music and the distant rustle of wind slipping through barely open windows.
Izuku stretched his legs out a little more, his shoes nudging against the car floor. It had been seven whole hours of driving after all, Katsuki was probably more tired than him.
“Kacchan.” No response.
“Kacchan.”
A sigh.
“What.”
He waited a beat before speaking.
“…Are we there yet?”
Katsuki’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. He was absolutely done with this question.
“You ask that again and I’m leaving you here.”
Izuku laughed quietly, turning his head to look out the window again. He didn’t really mind the wait, not when it was like this. He let his thoughts drift to how they got here in the first place, slowly closing his eyes and listening to the calming music coming from the radio.
He remembered the video.
It was late. Not too late, but enough for the world to feel quieter than usual. The kind of quiet that made everything feel softer, kinder, and warm. They had been on the couch, the TV casting a dim blue glow across the room, contrasting the warm yellow light of the lamp. Izuku had been tucked against Katsuki’s side, half paying attention to whatever was playing, and half was just enjoying the warmth pressed against him.
Katsuki had been the one actually watching.
Scrolling. Clicking. Dismissing video after video with a quiet “nah” or a bored exhale. Izuku didn’t care.
He was comfortable.
Then Katsuki paused. “…Oi.”
Izuku blinked, looking up at the screen.
“Hm?”
“Look.” And he did.
Katsuki moved the slider from the start of the video to further on.
The video shifted from some random intro to an open landscape. Mountains rose in the distance, tall and unmoving, their peaks brushing against the sky. They weren’t sharp or harsh. They looked steady, untouched. Like they were holding everything in place. Below them, a valley stretched out wide, like it was evergreen. And in that valley…
Flowers.
Oh, so many flowers.
Even through the screen, it was obvious. Colours spread out in every direction. Yellows, whites, hints of soft purple and blue, red and pink and orange too. They swayed together, moving like waves under the breeze.
Izuku leaned forward without realizing it.
“Oh…” Words left him in that moment.
Katsuki didn’t say anything either, simply watching with anticipation.
The host of the video was talking. Something about location, accessibility, camping spots.
Izuku wasn’t listening.
“That’s pretty,” he murmured.
Katsuki glanced at him.
“…Yeah.”
A pause.
Izuku shifted slightly, tucking himself closer, leaning further into the warmth of Katsukis chest.
“…We should go.”
Katsuki raised a brow.
“Hah?”
“It’d be nice,” Izuku said, a little quieter now. “Like… just us.”
Katsuki looked back at the screen, then at Izuku.
“…You mean like a date.”
Izuku’s ears turned pink.
“I mean, I didn’t say that but if you want to interpret it that way then I won’t stop you.”
“Tch.”
But he didn’t look away.
“…We’ll go.”
The memory faded as the car slowed.
Izuku sat up a bit straighter.
“Wait.”
Katsuki exhaled, easing his foot off the gas and turning the radio off.
“…We’re here.”
Izuku pressed his hands against the dashboard, leaning forward slightly as if that would somehow help him see better.
The path opened up, and then,
“Oh.”
It wasn’t exactly like the video, no, it was better.
The mountains stood tall in the distance, their shadows stretching longer now as the sun dipped lower. Their tips painted white and turning a creamy color in the sky. The sky itself was painted in soft shades of orange, gold, and purple.Adding into the gentle fade of the ever vibrant sun, the light spilling across everything it touched.
And the field…
Well,
It went on and on.
Grass spread out thick and wild, brushing against itself in soft waves, complimenting its surroundings effortlessly. Dandelions dotted the land, their yellow heads catching the sunlight. A tapestry of Queen Anne’s Lace and wild violets sprawled toward the horizon, the tiny white blooms looking like a sea of foam against the deep green grass.
The breeze moved through it all, gentle and constant, making everything sway and flutter like it was breathing.
Izuku opened the car door before it had even fully stopped, his excitement taking over.
“Kacchan, look!” He exclaimed.
“I can see it, dumbass” Katsuki muttered, turning off the engine.
Izuku stepped out, his shoes sinking slightly into the green and almost untouched grass.
It felt… soft.
Cooler than he expected.
The air smelled different too. Fresher. Lighter. More breathable.
He took a few steps forward, just looking, marveling at it.
Katsuki stepped out after him, stretching his arms slightly, his back popping faintly.
“…Tch. Finally.”
“Isn’t it just stunning?” Izuku turned, eyes bright with wonder and awe.
Katsuki glanced around.
The mountains. The field. The quiet.
“…It’s fine.”
Izuku grinned.
Next up came the actual camping part, step one?
Setting up the tent.
Which took a lot longer than it probably should have.
Mostly because Katsuki insisted he didn’t need the instructions, and also because Izuku insisted they absolutely did.
“Give me that.”
“No, you’re doing it wrong.”
“I am not doing it wrong.”
“Kacchan, the poles go through the loops first.”
“I know that.”
“You’re not doing that.”
“I was about to.”
“You weren’t.”
“Shut up.”
Izuku laughed, holding the instruction sheet up between them.
“Just look at it!”
“I don’t need to look at it.”
“Please.”
“…Tch.”
Five minutes later, Katsuki was holding the instructions.
Izuku said nothing, he just smiled.
The tent eventually stood, slightly crooked.
But most definitely standing.
Katsuki stepped back, hands on his hips.
“…There.”
“It looks good!” Izuku said quickly.
“It better.” He scoffed, turning to the rest of the camping gear. Rifling through sleeping bags, bottles of water and food.
But Izukus gaze glanced past him, further on.
Toward the field.
“…I’m gonna walk a bit.” He was already moving.
Katsuki was already crouching down, adjusting something near the base of the spot for the fire.
“Don’t go too far.”
“I won’t!” He said quickly.
And just like that, Izuku wandered off.
The grass brushed against his legs as he walked.
Each step felt softer than the last, like the ground was giving way just enough to make it comfortable. He slowed down after a while, then stopped.
The flowers were closer here.
Dandelions stood out the most. Bright yellow, simple, almost ordinary if not for how many there were.
Izuku crouched down, reaching out.
His fingers brushed against one.
Soft.
He plucked it gently.
Then another.
And another.
Without thinking too much about it, he sat down in the middle of the field.
The grass folded beneath him, bending instead of breaking, much stronger than they looked.
He gathered a few more flowers, turning them in his hands.
“…I think…”
Carefully, he started weaving them together.
It wasn’t perfect.
Some stems bent the wrong way. Others slipped loose before he could secure them.
But slowly, it started to take shape.
A small circle.
A little uneven.
But recognizable.
Izuku smiled to himself.
“Kacchan!”
Katsuki looked up from where he was, hands slightly dirty, hair a bit more disheveled than before.
“What.”
“Come here!” He shouted, eager.
Katsuki frowned.
“…Why.”
“Just come here!”
“…Tch.”
He stood, brushing his hands off against his pants, and started walking toward that sweet voice.
The grass shifted under his feet as he moved further from the tent, then he saw him.
Izuku sat in the middle of the field, surrounded by flowers like he belonged there, little dandelions waving gently in response to no one but each other. Blue bells were scattered here and there. To Katsuki, all the flowers looked like rainbow sprinkles on a very green cake.
But what was on his lovers head...
Katsuki stopped.
“…What the hell.”
A crown of dandelions rested in Izuku’s hair.
Messy, slightly tilted, a few petals already coming loose.
The sunlight caught on it, making the yellow glow more, resembling gold in colour.
Izuku looked up.
“Kacchan!” Izuku was smiling very proudly. His face tilting a bit as he leaned back.
Katsuki walked closer, slower now.
“What the hell are you doing sitting in weeds.”
Izumi pouted at that.
“But they’re flowers!”
“They’re weeds.”
Izuku gave a small chuckle, he paused for a moment before looking down at what was in his hands.
“I made this!” He said to Katsuki while he simultaneously pointed at the crown.
“…I can see that.”
Katsuki looked away for a second, then back.
“…You look stupid.”
Izuku grinned wider.
“You wanna try one?”
“No.”
“I made another one!”
“I said no.”
Izuku held it up anyway.
“Kacchan.”
“No.”
“Kacchan.”
“…Tch.”
He walked over and dropped down beside him.
“Happy.”
“Very.”
There was a pause.
Then Izuku leaned closer.
Katsuki didn’t move.
Carefully, he placed the crown on Katsuki’s head.
It sat there.
Crooked.
A little too small.
Izuku stared.
Then,
A small laugh slipped out.
“Kacchan, it actually looks nice!”
“Take it off.”
“No!”
“Love”
Izuku shook his head, laughing as Katsuki tried to persuade him.
Then wind picked up slightly, brushing through the field, making the flowers almost dance.
The sky had shifted, colours deepening as the sun lowered further.
Izuku looked out towards the horizon.
“…It’s really pretty.”
Katsuki looked at the other when he said that, but realized what he meant and followed his gaze.
The mountains were darker now, their edges softened by distance, the light grey and creamy white turning into a lighter shade of black and bright orange respectively. The sky behind them burned in shades of orange and pink, fading slowly into something softer.
“…Yeah.” He wasn’t only agreeing about the scenery though.
Silence settled again.
Not empty, just… quiet.
Izuku’s hand rested against the grass between them, Katsuki’s was closer than before and their fingers brushed.
Izuku stilled for a second.
Then, slowly, he shifted his hand.
Their fingers intertwined.
Katsuki glanced at him.
Izuku didn’t look back.
His eyes stayed on the sunset, but there was a small smile on his face.
Katsuki looked away.
“…If you tell anyone about the crown-“
“I won’t,” Izuku said quickly.
“…Tch.”
But he didn’t pull his hand away even as the sun dipped lower.
The field grew softer in color, the brightness fading into something calmer.
The breeze continued, steady and gentle.
Katsuki looked back at Izuku. His hair swayed like the grass, unruly, free, and very green. The curls framed his round face with ease, his freckles more visible than ever. Izuku had his eyes closed, taking in deep breaths.
Katsuki moved his hand to cup Izukus cheek. The others face turning to look at the blond as he opened his eyes. Their eyes shined with adoration for the other.
Slowly, hesitantly, they leaned forward. Foreheads touching as Katsukis hand went to the back of Izukus neck, pulling him closer.
“Thank you, kachan”
“No problem, Izuku”
Their lips captured each other then, not strong or hard or quick, but soft, Light, and warm.
Like home.
And they stayed like that.
Sitting in the middle of it all.
Hands held.
Crowns slightly crooked.
Together.
