Work Text:
Superfish couldn’t care less about DJ.
Or at least that’s what he kept telling himself as he tossed and turned in his own bed, unable to get the image of a certain blackhaired boy’s smile out of his mind.
Finally, the witch couldn’t take it anymore. Glancing at the clock on the wall he saw the time was 1:46AM. Oh well. He climbed out of bed, put on one of his scratchy suits–he was planning on stealing clothes of DJ’s anyway– and started heading towards the door.
Before he could launch into the sky, his steps halted.
Wait.
Why was he doing this?
Shit.
He had forgotten to come up with an excuse to go over there. Because it totally wasn’t because the only time he actually felt like he was worth anything was when he was around a certain annoying human. Definitely not.
The core.
Right.
That’s why he was going… To check on the core. Obviously.
So, with his reasoning straightened out, he launched into the sky in the direction of DJ’s house.
***
DJ was having the sleep of his life. It involved a very pleasant dream of a teal haired witch. That was until he awoke to the sound of his window opening…
Immediately, he jolted out of bed and to his feet, still half asleep.
Shit shit shit!
DJ assumed it was another guy sent to kill him, and he felt his heart drop to his stomach in fear. So, he grabbed the first weapon he saw– a table lamp– and hurled it towards the source of the noise. Realizing too late that he was an idiot and the source of the noise was his window which would very much break if it got hit by a ceramic lamp. But thankfully, the lamp didn’t hit the glass, or the ground even, instead, there was a flash of green light, and the lamp hovered in the air.
Suddenly DJ felt even more stupid than when he threw the lamp. It wasn’t an intruder.
“SUPERFISH!” DJ yelled at him,
At the shrill tone of voice the witch winced, “Yikes. Keep it down will you? Your brother’s sleeping.”
Despite having his mouth open ready to yell many more choice words, DJ clamped his mouth shut.
Then, he sighed, “ What are you doing here?”
Superfish walked over to DJ’s wardrobe, opening drawers and rummaging through all of his clothes, “Can I not just pay my friend a visit in the middle of the night?”
“No. You can’t.” DJ walked up behind him, snatching one of his favorite t-shirts out of his grabby witch hands, “Not to mention you scared the shit outta me. I thought the werewolf guy was back.”
The witch narrowed his eyes at him, “So you threw a lamp? Y’know I really forget how easily you humans startle.” He swiped back the shirt DJ has taken from him, “And I want to wear this,”
“Nuh uh.” He crossed his arms, “Not until you tell me what you’re actually doing here.”
“Im here to check on the core. Duh.” Superfish began to take off his suit jack and and unbutton his dress shirt, “It’s very important it stays safe throughout the night,” He nodded like this made perfect sense.
“And you couldn’t wait until morning like you usually...do….” DJ trailed off slightly at the sight of Superfish’s bare back. He shook his head to clear his thoughts, hoping his cheeks weren’t as red as they felt, “I would’ve been fine here by myself y’know,”
In fact he would’ve been more than fine. He would be sleeping peacefully instead of blushing and trying to pretend he isn’t currently having a personal crisis.
Superfish turned towards him, still shirtless, dangling the old, raggedy, anime shirt of DJ’s in one hand, “Well considering you have almost died a concerning amount of time in the weeks I’ve known you I seriously doubt that. And I want snacks.”
Trying to ignore the witch’s toned abs practically staring at him, DJ kept his eyes locked on the floor, “Nope. We’re not going to the kitchen because Arun is sleeping and you’re loud and will wake him up.” He cleared his throat, “Also put a shirt on…” He searched for an excuse, “You’ll…..Get a cold.” He nodded as though that made perfect sense.
Superfish cocked an eyebrow at him, noting the red in his cheeks and purposefully leaving his shirt off, “I can’t get colds. But if I’m too distracting I supposeee I can put one on,” He pulled DJ’s old shirt on, then stared at DJ expectantly.
DJ tilted his head like a confused dog,
“Are you planning on standing there while I change my pants or would you rather I keep my pants on in front of you?”
The black haired boy’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, and he promptly turned and faced the back wall, “SORRY!”
Superfish chuckled to himself as he changed. Then, while DJ’s back was still turned, he went right next to him, until he was inches away from DJ’s red tipped ears. He really was oblivious to everything around him.
His plan had been to scare him, but when he got that close, he somewhat forgot what he was supposed to be doing. He could see a freckle right on his neck he hadn’t noticed befor-
What the hell?
He shouldn’t have even noticed something like that.’
Being this close to a mere human shouldn’t have an effect on him.
Snap out of it.
He shook his head as though breaking a trance, and got back to what his original intention had been in the first place, “Boo!”
DJ, who was still on edge from not only thinking a hitman had broken in, but had also been personally assaulted by the sight of Superfish’s abs, practically flew halfway across the room, “Shit! You asshole!”
Superfish laughed so hard his stomach hurt. Wiping tears from his eyes, he finally recovered, still chuckling, “Now can we get snacks if I promise to be very quiet?”
DJ huffed, “Fine, but if Arun wakes up I’m never forgiving you,”
The witch started walking towards DJ’s bedroom door, “If so you can just pin me to the ground again,”
DJ choked on his own spit, “W-what?
“That’s what you did last time your brother was around me,” He looked back at him with a smirk, “I don’t mind,”

Together, the two boys–one of which was still blushing profusely and trying to play it off– snuck towards the kitchen.
As soon as they arrived, Superfish began raiding the pantry.
“There’s no way you can eat all of that,” DJ remarked, staring at the multiple family sized bags of chips and all the snacks the witch had piled in his arms,
“You underestimate me,”
On the way back to DJ’s room, not only did Superfish drop a tin of cookies when they were walking past Arun’s door, but he also proceeded to spit out a string of cuss words because it landed on his foot.
“SHH!” DJ hissed as Superfish let the rest of the snacks fall out of his hands so he could hop up and down on one foot while he held his injured one.
DJ scooped up all the snacks from the floor, and then dragged Superfish back to his room.
“You said you would be quiet!” He scolded as he softly closed the bedroom door behind them,
The witch pathetically hopped over to the bed and dramatically flopped onto it, “Yes and that was before I was brutally injured,”
DJ sighed and sat on the bed next to him, dumping all the snacks out of his arms and onto Superfish’s stomach, “You dropped a box of biscuits. You weren’t stabbed.”
He dramatically groaned into the blankets beneath him, “I think It’s broken,”
The black haired boy couldn’t help but roll his eyes, “It isn’t broken. Besides, aren't you like the most powerful witch ever?”
“What does that have to do with this? Do you think witches have like titanium feet or something?”
“I don’t know!” DJ threw his hands up in exasperation, “Now are you going to eat the hundreds of snacks you brought up here?”
“That felt very judgey but yes I will.”
***
Slightly surprisingly, they got along for the next 5 minutes, or at least long enough for them both to settle sitting on the bed with a pretty good amount of space between them, sharing a bag of chips.
They were having a relatively normal–or as normal as things could be in their situation–conversation. Or, at least they were, until DJ took the last chip from the bag, leaving only crumbs and fragments. It was a fraction of an inch from his lips when Superfish’s hand shot out, trying to take it.
DJ jerked back, trying to keep it out of reach. The witch got up on his knees, launching himself towards the black haired boy as they both laughed. He jumped on top of him, fighting each other over a long forgotten chip.
It really was a great moment, one full of carefree laughter, or at least it was until the bedroom door creaked open.
DJ watched in horror as Arun walked in. He looked down at his little brother, who was currently pinned beneath a boy with bright blue hair in the middle of the night. Then, without saying anything, Arun turned on his heel and walked right back out.
The second he shut the door again, there was a moment of stunned silence before Superfish started to laugh again, louder than before. It wasn’t long before DJ was laughing too, despite being mortified.
Superfish laughed so hard he couldn’t hold himself up anymore, and he dropped right on top of DJ, causing the two of them to laugh even more.
“Get off me!” DJ laughed,
Superfish rolled halfway off of him, then looked at him.
For some reason, the eye contact they made in that moment felt charged. The laughter faded, and slowly, their smiles softened into something more sincere. But neither boy looked away.
They held that eye contact for what felt like forever. And Superfish found that he would’ve been happy to spend the rest of his life drowning in those perfectly brown eyes. But finally, after what could’ve been 5 seconds or five hours, DJ cleared his throat and looked away. “Goodnight Superfreak,”
The witch felt startled by being ripped from his trance, “‘Night human,”
No one said anything about making a pallet for Superfish to sleep on. And no one even mentioned everything that remained unsaid between them.
Superfish fell asleep first, oddly more comfortable than he had been in a very long time. DJ however, stayed awake. He stared at the ceiling, replaying the look in Superfish’s eyes from a moment before. They were full of emotion. DJ just didn’t know which one. He was also hyper aware of where him and Superfish were still touching.
Enough of this.
Just go to sleep.
Finally, he did. And he didn’t have a single nightmare, for the first time in a long time.
And when Arun went into DJ’s room the next morning expecting to have a very important talk with him, he once again turned on his heel and walked right back out. Deciding it would be better to talk to him another time. Superfish had his head resting on DJ’s chest, one of his legs thrown over both of DJ’s. And DJ had one hand tangled in the witch’s teal locks, the other wrapped around him.
