Percy’s mom had always raised him to be a gentleman, so he did the gentlemanly thing and gently moved his arm so it wrapped around Annabeth’s shoulders. Unconsciously, Annabeth shifted so her face was tucked into the crook of Percy’s neck. Percy could feel his face heating up. They were basically cuddling. Gods forbid Grover or someone else walk in on them.

Summary
After everyone’s tasks were assigned, it was just Percy and Annabeth, together again. Percy returned to his spot at her bedside, lacing their fingers together. With his free hand, he cradled the side of her face. His eyebrows were doing the thing where they scrunched-up on his face again. Annabeth liked it.
“Annabeth,” Percy exhaled, “why–? Why did you do that?”
“‘Cause I got your back, Seaweed Brain,” Annabeth replied, as if that explained everything. To her, it did. Percy had saved her so many times throughout the years, it only made sense that she put her life on the line for him, too. It was how they worked.

She heard Percy breathing through the phone.
Oh gods, she thought, I made everything all weird. He’s not responding. Oh, my gods.
Annabeth was about to say, “Never mind” when Percy replied, “Good. Me too, Wise Girl. See you tomorrow.” And then he hung up.
Annabeth face-planted on her bed. She had a date— friend get-together, she meant— to prepare for.

Summary
Annabeth’s breath was coming faster than she could control. Her mind was spinning. Her eyes stung. Everything was out of her control. Nothing was going according to plan.
Where was Percy?
Not again, she thought desperately. She’d done this once before. She’d already lost someone. She’d watched Thalia die, powerless to stop it. I can’t lose him too. She’d come so close so many times before. When they were twelve, and he'd fallen off the St. Louis arch trying to protect her and Grover. When he’d sacrificed himself to Hephaestus’ chair in the Tunnel of Love. Last summer, when she’d kissed him, and then he got exploded trying to get her out of the volcano.
But none of that mattered.
Once again, Annabeth Chase was alone.
