Erika pursed her lips. She always knew when Pete was being purposefully dense.
“You know I mean his brother.”
“He’s…” Pete waved a hand in the air, trying to conjure the right words suited to capture Vegas’s essence. Giving up, Pete simply said, “He intrigues me.”
“You play a dangerous game. You’re not a mortal. You are getting attached, and you know he could very well die in the next battle.”
Pete knew. He did. He didn’t need to be reminded.
“Don’t…” he began carefully, “Don’t other Guardians feel like this?”
“Like what?” Erika asked kindly, tilting her head in Pete’s direction. She had always taken special interest in Pete, and he was always grateful for her advice and company. He could confide in her.
With a forceful exhale, Pete’s hands flapped in front of him as he tried to explain. “Like…like I can’t get away from him. Like I just want to watch him, all the time, and more than that, I want him to see me. I want him to know I’m there. I hear Kim write love songs, and sometimes, the words feel…right. Can…can Guardians fall in love?”

Vegas tried to brace himself, but he was still unprepared when the door opened inward to reveal-
“Vegas?” Pete said, his eyes narrowed as six different emotions flashed over his face. The most readable from Vegas’s experience was anger. The one he recognized because it was Pete was sadness.
Pete moved to close the door on him, but Vegas swung out a fist to stop him.
“Pete, wait-”
“No,” Pete snapped, anger winning out in the end. “You don’t get to just show up at my door, and-
“Pete, I’m not here for me.”
Pete opened his mouth to shout again, but Vegas’s companion joined the conversation, letting out a piercing wail that had Vegas shifting his attention as Pete’s eyes went wide.
“Is… Did you bring a baby to my house?”

Pete waits until they are seated before he speaks again.
“So what do you think is really going on?”
Vegas sighs. It’s not directed at Pete, never at Pete. He’s just as lost as his partner, and he doesn’t like that. He never likes not having control over the situation.
“Are you asking if I really think that underground chemist really made something that can revive the dead?”
It’s Pete’s turn to sigh as he mixes his food on his plate.
He takes a bite, thinking, and Vegas watches for his reaction. He knows he’s a good cook, but it’s a particular point of pride for him to feed Pete. After all, it was why his pet came crawling back to him. No one else could feed him, he had said. Only Vegas.
