Alternative title: The American Waking Nightmare.
For all you know, you're not even capable of having dreams anymore. At the very least you have those horrid ones that wake you up in a cold sweat, right? This made you all the better target for a humble little paid human experimentation program down the road, one promising development of a drug that induces the most pleasant dreams one could imagine. Maybe, just maybe, now you could finally find respite in sleep, a break from the endless turmoil.
Instead, what you get is a waking nightmare.
You wake up in a post-apocalyptic world wrecked by atomic warfare with no clue how you made it there or how to go home. But lucky you! The first people you meet are from an organization of good samaritans who only want to help. The Enclave.
...At least that's what he tries to assure you.
John Henry Eden the supposed President of the United States welcomes you to the Enclave warmly, despite you obviously not being allowed to leave. The trade off is simple: you share all you know about your world, and they'll find a way to get you back to it. Will you believe him? Or will you step out of Plato's cave?

When he sat back up, she wore a soft smile. “I know you’ll say I sound dumb, that fate’s not real, but I like to think it’s what led me to you. When I needed someone to keep me safe, to help me.”
“Mmm,” he grumbled. He wasn’t sure what he thought about fate anymore. Was it his fate to end up like this— a leashed dog for whoever held his contract? He didn’t want to believe that. But the longer he spent with her, with the frustratingly optimistic vault dweller, the more he wondered if something had led her to him.
At first, he felt as though she was brought to him as some sort of punishment for his two-hundred years of sins. It was torture, following her around being a do-gooder while the wasteland threw every bad thing it could at her. And then the feelings started. He thought he’d traded a long list of abusive employers for an employer that would lead to his ultimate undoing, that she’d unravel his psyche and make him go mad.
Ex-vaultie, still-too-good-for-the-wasteland Ana isn't quite sure what fate has in store for her anymore, but she's willing to keep going in spite of it all.

After 19 years of living it, these roles were all either had been to each other, the script as concrete as the halls they travelled though on strict schedule day in and day out. Butch had grown an appetite for this specific social designation, more deep-seated than that of his G.O.A.T results—to be the one with power was a tag he earned himself. He enjoyed the scrutinizing glances of a passerby's eyes landing upon him, and his name, supplied with a selection of choice descriptors meant to paint him as the 'tenacious delinquent,' travelling in whispers across the confines of the vault, all in recognition. But Van struggled to find his lines after all this time, unwilling to give him the satisfaction, intentionally or not.
Yet here they are, Butch freeing Van of his silence strand by strand wrapped tight around his fist.
