“They want to catch us off guard,” Phainon infers, “with their Crown Prince being the leading force.”
“Correct,” Aglaea says, sighing. “Their regular soldiers are already troublesome enough, I can only imagine the destruction a royal member will bring. He’s going to use his time in the mortal realm to gain an unprecedented amount of power. Which is why, Khaslana, you need to accompany him.”
“To kill him, right?” Phainon asks. “To nip the bud before it blooms?”
“You, Khaslana, are to live with him, find details about the attack, and prevent him from gaining further power at all costs.”
Angel Phainon is sent to spy on Succubus Mydei for a mission. It would be detrimental if he were to fall in love with him.

“Finish the story,” Phainon prompts, and it comes out kind of quiet, kind of weird.
“He fell in love with a warrior in Okhema,” Mydei tells him, sliding a hand under his pillow. “They were equals in just about everything, and that’s… significant to a Kremnoan. He died sacrificing himself to buy that warrior time to save the city.”
“That sounds like something a hero would do to me.”
“Maybe,” Mydei grumbles. “A real hero wouldn’t leave the one he loves to fight alone.”

He doesn’t turn, but he does tune out the hawking of the merchants some more to hone in on the conversation. Phainon is fairly fit, though, he ponders, half amused and half bemused, as he picks up a pomegranate. Surely if anything, his arms are thicker than his face?
Or, how Mydei tries to find something that makes Phainon blush.

"It's how my anatomy works." Phainon's eyes were bright now, pupils blown wide until the blue was nearly swallowed by black, challenging and hopeful and devastatingly aroused. A flush rode high on his cheekbones, spreading down his neck. "Are you going to help or not?"

Summary
The sight was downright baffling: Mydei’s usually ill-tempered cat rubbing against the leg of his one-night-stand, purring up a storm. Mydei could do nothing but grasp for the only reasonable conclusion: “You have a cat too.”
“I don’t, actually.”
“Some other pet then?”
“No…”
“Any experience with animals at all?” Mydei asked, a bit incredulous.
Phainon blinked. “I fed my neighbour’s goldfish for a week when I was eight?”
Mydei looked to their feet, where Fig Stew was now winding between Phainon’s ankles in crystal-clear affection. Nikador, he thought, in slight disbelief. Tell me I didn’t somehow sleep with the only human in Amphoreus who my cat happens to like.
Mydei has a routine. Said routine does not involve his cat falling in love with his gym-rival-with-benefits. (Especially not when it’s starting to make Mydei fall for him a little, too.)

Summary
"So you really did sneak in after all, Mydei. I don't know about anywhere else, but that conspicuous frame of yours is bound to be noticed in Marmoreal Palace."
Should be a decent ice-breaker, Phainon figured.
He didn't get to take a good look at his overall condition, but the prince seemed relatively unruffled, if his composure was anything to judge by. However, unruffled never inherently meant unscathed.
Mydei's face remained impassive, almost as if he had expected to run into him.
"Is there something you need?" he asked flatly.
Phainon suppressed a noise.
He couldn't believe this guy.
When Mydei takes a hit intended for him, Phainon finds himself increasingly preoccupied with the one opponent he can't quite figure out.

Summary
“I’ll tell you,” Mydei concedes, but there’s a growing, playful part of him who wants to make Phainon struggle more, until Mydei has to face his entire anger and possessiveness and shatter against it in a million pieces. “But only if you do something for me first."
He expects Phainon to fight him on this. It’s how it’s always been between them: they bicker until one of them gives up, and then makes the other fight twice as hard next time. It’s an Alpha thing, petty and annoying and instinctual, like looking back after someone bumped into you — but Phainon doesn’t fight. Phainon’s voice is clear and quiet, compressed in the closed space of his Sedan, and more honest than Mydei will ever be.
“Tell me," he says. "And I’ll do it.”
How simple. How frighteningly easy.
“Anything?”
“Anything.”
How sobering.
Mydei stops laughing. Mydei confesses.

Mydei’s hand was beautiful.
Not a single jagged fingernail, no callus in sight. And very warm—startlingly so, against Phainon’s own rougher grip. It was a very stark difference, in fact, it even left him slightly unsettled, feeling like he was holding something he had no right to.
“...You can let go now. My hand is fine.” Mydei said evenly.
Phainon didn't want to. If anything, he wanted to hold both of them, tuck them between his own, gently trace his thumb across his knuckles—maybe even kiss them—
“Deliverer?”
“Your hand is… really pretty.”
Or: Mydei’s hands are the key that unlocks Phainon to come to terms/realise his feelings.

Mydei frowned at the backhanded compliment. Then, in the hopes of turning this situation on him and catching him tongue tied instead, he raised a brow. “You find me attractive?”
Unfazed, Phainon shrugged. “So what if I do? It doesn’t mean anything.”
He almost convinced both of them that it was nothing. But Phainon’s expression darkened, just a little bit, and he glanced at Mydei once more. “Unless, of course, you want it to.”

Phainon’s brows lift. “Huh.” When he doesn’t elaborate, Mydei gives him a look. “Well,” he says. “It’s just that I think I have a similar problem. With family. And Christmas.” He grimaces. “If I don’t come home with a boyfriend, I think my mother will kill me.”
Mydei’s eyes narrow. “Did you tell Cipher that? She probably thinks we can help each other.”
Phainon’s scoffs. “How? By pretending to date each other?”
Tired of their families pressuring them about significant others at Christmas, Mydei and Phainon agree to pretend to date each other and then break up after the holidays. Things don't go as planned.

“Time?” Mydei asks softly.
Phainon checks it on his teleslate. “Second quint of Action Hour,” he murmurs back. “You could continue sleeping, if you wanted to.”
Mydei shakes his head just a little, his hair splayed out like a radiant sun behind him. “No need,” he says, his voice still a little scratchy from sleep.
Mydei always does things to Phainon, and now the white-haired warrior has a thousand thoughts rushing through his mind. However, none of the thoughts translate to eloquent words, because one singular sentence comes tumbling out before Phainon can control it.
“I want to kiss you,” he says stupidly.
Phainon and Mydei spend a leisurely rest day together after Mydei returns from a solo mission late.
