Despite suggesting it, Taissa cannot bring herself to go through with the cannibalism, but Van needs her safe and fed. Luckily(?) after however many nights of chasing her round forests, Van understands the Other Taissa and knows that she would keep her Tai safe.
(There are three people in the Taivan relationship; Taissa, Van and other Taissa. And sometimes Other Taissa is needed to do what Taissa cannot.)
