Summary
Shane knows about the sensitive spot behind Ilya’s ear. He knows how long it will take to walk from Montreal to Boston, until his feet are bloody. He knows what Ilya tastes like after he’s had a cup of coffee. He knows about all the women Ilya takes home. But Shane also knows Ilya talks in his sleep. These small intricacies of their love is what keeps Shane’s head above water. There’s only a hint of an ache when he hears Ilya’s name. Ilya kisses him and that ache is now more apparent. Ilya kisses him and he unravels. No one is to blame. It’s just the way these things go. But it wasn’t until that day in the locker room, when he heard the news, that he realized just how much he had to lose.

"You take her." Shane waits for Rozanov to take Lucie, but when he doesn't do anything, Shane flicks his gaze up to see Rozanov's eyes widen. "What?"
"You want me to feed her?"
"Yes. You literally just held her. What's the difference?"
"I-I don't know what to do."
Shane passes Lucie over to him, then guides Rozanov's hand to the bottle to keep it up. "You just hold it like that."
"Then what?"
Or: Shane has a one night stand with a woman during the six months Ilya ghosted him, and he's left with a little girl. Lucie Hollander wraps them both around her little finger and changes the course of their love story.

"Shane," Bood says firmly. And it sounds so wrong, because Bood never calls him Shane. Shane is always Hollzy. And Bood's voice is supposed to be loud and steady, not shaky. And Shane finally, finally becomes aware enough of his surroundings to feel the trembling of Bood's hands against his waist. "Shane, please. They're working on him. We need to give them space so they can—so they can make sure he's okay."
"He's my husband," Shane chokes out, not quite managing to choke down the sob that's been building up long enough to boil over. Bood makes a similarly choked noise at that. "You need to let me go. He's my husband."
OR
Ilya gets injured on the ice during Shane's first season with the Centaurs. Shane loses his mind, a bit.

Shane glanced up again, watching as the captain gestured vaguely toward Shane without looking at him. “Shane Hollander.” The name came out of his mouth like it was laced with poison.
Shane became very aware of many eyes turning to him now. He felt a few claps on the back and tried to force a tight smile. But his eyes wandered back up to Ilya Rozanov, who was looking at him with so much quiet contempt, that Shane started to understand the phrase ‘if looks could kill.’

OR: Ilya spirals into a deep depression when Shane breaks things off with him definitively after a horrifying run in with their feelings (and tuna melts).
They go no contact for close to a year until Shane is unexpectedly traded to Boston the following season.
Shane finds his new captain is a version of Ilya he's never seen before: dark, icy, and distant.
But their newfound proximity mixed with old feelings creates a complicated dynamic that they can't ignore forever.
