Summary
The three teenagers sit huddled to the back of the interrogation room, each tucked under their own shock blankets in varying stages of comfort. Only Peter looks up at the door’s rusty groaning. His arm is in a sling.
“Hey, yous,” Ted steps through the threshold. “So, hey, when I said I could come pick you up for whatever, whenever, if you’d just dared to live a little, I didn’t mean at the ass crack of dawn on a goddamn Wednesday while I’m hungover, Petey.”
“What the fuck did you just say?” Officer Bailey interrupts.
“Oh, nothing, sir, all classy law-abiding topics of conversation here,” Ted says. “Hey, Petey, at least tell me you’re wasted off your ass and that this was all worth it.”
“I’m not,” Peter says, voice hoarse.
“Fucking useless.”
(Or: the one where Theodore Spankoffski shows up at the police station that night after the nightmare is over.)

Max had been a mess ever since the night Steph had invited him to that rager at the Old Waylon Place.
He can’t sleep, he can’t eat, and he can’t go five minutes without three repeated phrases rattling through his head.
Unsound. Black book. Pay the price.
The thing that makes it all worse though is that, no matter how hard he tries, Max can’t remember even going to the Waylon Place. Can’t remember anything about that night.
All he knows is that he keeps finding himself in the middle of the Witchwoods, face-to-face with the Old Waylon Place with no recollection of getting there.
Something is calling out to him to enter.

"They’d lost contact with him exactly four minutes and seventeen seconds after he had entered. Nothing else had even happened then, not that they could tell- no screams, no changes in signals, nothing but a slightly increased heartbeat. Just a burst of static, and the communication was gone. He was *gone.*
Losing the second-in-command of the whole unit wasn't enough to deem the mission a failure, apparently.
It had been one day since he’d finally been told, in no uncertain terms, to stop asking for authorization for a rescue mission, because no such authorization would ever come. That it didn’t matter, because the mission was a success, and that one small failure wasn’t enough of a reason to go pulling the plug on the whole thing. That *he* didn’t matter.
The anger, the sheer injustice of it, burns a hole in his stomach. Even when they’d first lost contact, he’d begged the supervisors and the General to let him go in after him, to do *something* to figure out where he was or what happened to him.
They’d refused then, too.
Which is why, now, he’s here."
