Pre 'to change the course of the future'.
In Laketown, the company rests and tends to Bilbo, ill from Mirkwood and the cold water escape. Thorin may, perhaps, tend to Bilbo more than the others, which not only leaves Thorin confused, but leaves Bilbo a bit bewildered, too.
But hopeful. Ever hopeful that, perhaps, Bilbo's not the only one harboring feelings deeper than the small infatuation he had thought it to be.
It would be easier for them both if one of them would just say something.
