Their gazes turn expectantly to Pearl. She shrinks under the weight of it. This path is one she’s walked before, back in a time of red strings and red eyes, bloodlust and bitterness. Pearl's no stranger to being a lone wolf. That's just how it goes, sometimes, in a death game, despite how much she wishes otherwise. So when a new world starts with Gem and Grian's promises of belonging, she leaps at the chance to be part of a pack again. But she quickly finds herself pulled into dark, cold depths that have her struggling to keep her head above water. And at the end of it all, she faces a haunting question: what do they actually want her for?

They aren’t delivering anything special – five large barrels of pickles, several bolts of cloth, enough salt to season a couple thousand meals – and their ship is barely large enough to pass council regulations. It doesn’t matter. It’s hers, and she's on it. She’s on the open sea with her closest friends, and a ship, and a storage bunker full of merchandise.
Impulse practically has to drag her below deck so Skizz can take over watch. She curls up on her bunk, lulled to sleep by the rocking of the waves, and dreams of sailing.

When Gem sets out on her first voyage to the Isles - as a captain, no less! - she has full faith that with her experienced crew beside her, nothing could possibly go wrong. That is, until a sudden storm sweeps them across the sea, and they encounter something (...someone?) that they thought was confined to myth...
