Summary
There was a line—you'd drawn it yourself, that spring you decided to leave him—and on the other side of it, your paths diverged for good. You told yourself you'd never see him again, made peace with it the only way you knew: by letting time do what you couldn't.
You still remember that spring with a clarity you've never managed since. The steady patter of rain on the engawa of your childhood home, incense and chrysanthemums clinging to your mofuku, your hair, your skin. Even now, that scent returns the moment someone says his name.
When he left Kotobukicho, you thought that was it. Back in California, you still wanted to know how he was doing, but he'd gone to Boston for his master's, and whatever thread connected you had stretched too thin. There was guilt, more pain than admitted, but you made peace with it, as you'd learned to with everything. You and Shoko graduated that spring; by fall, medical school left no room for looking back.
Four years later, you matched into residency in New York. Whatever life he was building stopped reaching you at all.
Ten more years passed. The pain dulled, receded, until you'd forgotten him so completely even the forgetting went unnoticed.
Until today.
