It was reassurance, that indeed, she wouldn't lose someone she cared about again; that Columbina was safe and sound by her side.

Every exception Ronova carved into the ledger was designed to preserve Phanes' legacy, and that is maintaining the delicate equilibrium of the world against the Abyss. But Anastasya's “love” did the exact opposite. Unknowingly, she was merely inviting disaster to her life. It was an incredibly stupid risk for someone so soft as the snow.
Truth be told, Anastasya was truly wise enough, but Ronova was a victim of her own deeply hidden desires— no matter how many absolute laws she claimed to uphold, the Shade couldn't entirely choke out the genuine care she held for her.
