Summary
Beast Tamer meets an interesting little mouse and finds themself drawn to him. It's meant to be a quickie, a one or two-night thing that ends with the human as a Fool kept for Beast Tamer's benefit.
But you see, all sorts of creatures like mice. Birds and snakes like to swallow them whole, and even sweet, tame dogs like to chase when something runs. The cat is not the only creature with the mouse in its claws.
Things spiral out of control from there.

Maddie freezes halfway down the stairs, her hand pressing flat to the wall for balance as she stutters a step.
Downstairs, the TV light flickers blue out of the living room and into the hallway, spreading over the floor and catching on a trail of bootprints leading in from the cracked-open front door.
Laughter from the TV breaks the quiet. Maddie follows the trail of bootprints down the hall and towards the kitchen.
The door was shut, she’s sure of it.
