Rome.
What is Rome?
To the patricians, it's power, luxury, and ruthless ambition. To the plebeians, a city of survival where Fortuna may grant a better life. To the slaves, a machine built upon their labour, where freedom remains a distant dream.
To an Emperor, Rome is a canvas upon which to carve his name into eternity.And perhaps, in that regard, an Emperor is not so different from a gladiator.
Both seek glory. Both wish to be remembered.
They should have nothing else in common. One was born beneath the frozen skies of the North, the other into a destiny already touched by greatness.
Yet despite every difference, a forbidden bond has grown between them.
As Rome prepares to celebrate the Dies Natalis of its conquering Emperor, fate waits in the shadows. Before the festivities end, a gladiator may secure his own place in history.
And perhaps the Emperor's heart along with it.

“Yes! Whatever it is, I’ll consider it.”
“Eventually Lord Hades will have mercy upon you. He will. I know that must sound strange—the most severe of the gods showing mercy where his kindred won’t—but it’s the truth. The Olympians are more… unreliable. The only way I can see to protect the Underworld and in turn you and your mother is this: Bind yourself to me.” His hands tremble. He brushes his thumb along the crook of Zag’s throat, so very sweet, even when he’s rigid with tension. “Wed me.”
Raised by his mother far away from both Olympus and the Underworld, a strange series of events leads Zagreus to meeting a faceless, nameless Chthonic god.

Summary
The prince, amicable to a fault and stronger than his small frame lets on, ensnared Death so effectively it pales in comparison to even Sisyphus' stunt. By his smile alone can he draw Death closer into his grasp, and Thanatos isn’t sure he would mind if he never lets go.

Summary
This is a first for Thanatos. He has drunk before, yes, but he has never drunk quite this much, and certainly never wine direct from Dionysus’ cup. He had had a lot of it, as overflowing and everlasting as it is, heady and potent enough to disarm a Hydra. Dionysus had offered, and Death was about to politely decline when Zagreus came out of nowhere, swinging an arm around him. He said right next to his ear, “For the record, this is what I meant by ‘live a little’,” before taking his own big gulp from the goblet, Dionysus laughing as it spilled down his chin. Thanatos remembers watching Zagreus wipe away the wine from the side of his mouth, smiling and licking his lips and when he pushed the cup towards Death, he put it to his mouth without a second thought. Thanatos drank, and the sound of Zagreus’ shocked laughter coaxed him further. So long as he heard Zag’s delighted shouts and befuddled cheers, he drank.

“Zagreus,” Thanatos sighed, a low and lonesome sound. “What is it that you need from me?”
“Sleep,” came the choked reply. “Please. Whatever you must do. Anything to get me to sleep.”
Or: Zagreus traverses the Underworld in endless cycles, unable to find any rest; though he grows stronger each time that he perishes, his body refuses to let him sleep. For this, he seeks a begrudging Thanatos, who becomes his only respite.
