Ilya likes when Hollander is around, he really does. But this is different. This is him taking an unprecedented layover in the city Ilya’s staying in for a game. This is Shane Hollander pulling an expressly non-Shane Hollander move. And that’s the type of thing that fucks Ilya up if he lets himself think about it too hard. So he doesn’t think about it. He fucks Hollander and it’s great as usual and everything is fine.
And then both their flights get canceled due to a blizzard.

Summary
Ilya coughed into his elbow, and looked back at Shane, pathetically. “I think,” he whispered, “I think I am sick. I do not feel good.”
“I know,” said Shane, rising and placing a gentle kiss on the top of his head. He stood close to Ilya, but busied himself, measuring out doses of medication and checking for interactions on the sides of pill bottles, “but I… am going to help with that.” As he said that, reading the side of a box of decongestant, he felt Ilya tip forward and wrap his long arms around Shane’s hips – the only part of him, he could reach.
Ilya’s forehead pressed into his waist and he felt the warmth radiating off of him immediately. Shane’s heart split open and his eyes prickled.
“My Shane,” Ilya whispered to himself. Shane ran one hand gently through Ilya’s hair, and when he was ready, stepped backwards. “Mphhh” whined Ilya, arms outstretched, “come back.”

His mother’s eyes darken with weariness Shane recognizes instinctually, a grief separate but not wholly unlike his own. A tear makes its way down her cheek, but Shane’s stay put, stubborn, cradled in his lashline like if he doesn’t cry, maybe none of this is as bad as he thinks it is.
“Just—I just have to ask,” she says. Her voice lowers to a whisper, that ever-steady corner of her mouth wavering as her palm envelopes his cheek. “How long have you been hurting?”
My whole life, probably, Shane thinks. I'm sorry. I just didn’t know.

Based very loosely on events from The Long Game that my brain wanted to put into the first book, somewhere between Shane’s injury, and before Scott Hunter wins the cup - for maximum angst, obviously.
What if Ilya’s plane had actually crashed? And what if it had happened before he and Shane had the chance to confess their love and know what it was like to be together.
Or
A fic so I could write a really needy Shane who can't hide his feelings anymore, and an Ilya who is faced with the undeniable truth that someone cares for him.

After Ilya gets an injury that puts him on the bench for a month, he convinces Shane to let him go watch a game against the Washington Capitals. Shane agrees, on one condition: they fly separately. “TK, look at me, baby,” Carlos tells him, forcing his eyes to rise up from the floor and meet his. “We’re gonna be fine. They’re placing extra officers and Rangers on every call today.”
Carlos can still see TK’s hands flexing and unflexing.
“Tyler.”
TK snaps to attention, his hands stop moving.
“I’ll be okay. Hey, maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get placed on a call together,” Carlos says with a smile.
“Okay,” TK lets out a big breath that he’d obviously been holding in.
Carlos brings his hands up behind his husbands’ back and pulls him in. TK wraps his arms around his husbands’ warm frame, holding him close and hoping that the day will go by smoothly…

Carlos still feels his heartbeat in his ears, and tries to focus on other things: the soft hum of the engine shutting off and the way it echoes in the large parking garage, the song-and-dance that erupts from their footsteps, sluggish and squelching against the cement from the wetness that seeped into the soles of their shoes.
TK holds onto his arm as they walk, necessary for stability, and Carlos is grateful for it; for him, and the closeness. He smooths his own thumb over TK’s hip as they head for the elevator, and he’s sure they must be a sight: half out of their uniforms, Carlos carrying a bag with extra-strength Tylenol and some Gatorades in it along with both of their work backpacks, and TK hanging off him with a bandage on his head that’ll be changing once they get into the loft.

Or, their first Christmas as a married couple doesn’t go quite as planned.
