Robby closes his eyes, willing the tears away. There's so much he wants to say—why do you still live with me, then? Why aren't you at her place? He bites the words back. "And I don't? Being with me isn't a real life?"
The worst part is that he knows exactly what Jack means; he gets it, he really does.
"What do you want us to do, huh? Live as roommates for the rest of our lives and have our families pester us about finding wives? We can't even get fucking married!"

Dennis digs through his bag for the crumpled piece of paper he knows to be in there somewhere. His chest feels tight, and his lip bleeds from biting the tears away. He smooths the single sheet of computer paper out as best he can and gets a pen from off his nightstand to add some comments in the margins. It's been weeks since he wrote the note, and there are things that need to be addressed.
I'm sorry Dr. Robby, he writes at the very top, breath caught in his throat. He's not afraid, but a last-ditch effort at self-preservation from his body makes each inhale heavy. I'm sorry for making you take me in. You're a good man and I took advantage of that.

“Whitaker?” He startles so hard he nearly falls off the edge. It’s Robby. “What are you doing here?”
“Just sitting.”
“How about you scoot back a little? Sit behind the railing instead. It’s there for a reason, you know.” There’s something careful in his voice. Dennis hates that. Robby should still be angry with him, he should be screaming and cursing.

Dennis’ brain is scrambled. It’s not proper negotiation, but isn’t that what he asked for when Robby locked the collar around his neck? For decisions to be made for him, regardless of his comfort, for Robby’s will to be exerted over him, until he was finally formed into the shape that Robby liked best. The ED team shuffles out, Whitaker and Dr. Robby taking up the rear. Dr. Robby stops him with a hand on Whitaker’s waist, there and gone. “Really,” he says low, directly into his ear, beard scratching his cartilage, “that was amazing. You didn’t waste any time starting compressions. That probably saved that baby’s life. You saved that baby’s life.”
The praise goes to his head, suffusing him with endorphins. “Thank you, Dad.” And he promptly wants to crawl out of his skin and slither down the drain with the after birth slop.
