Summary
When they take the first finger, Essek feels relief.
There are a multitude of reasons, the first being that they, in some form of providence, selected his right pinky for amputation. His least used finger on his non-dominant hand, not crucial in any somatics, markedly his least beloved bundle of phalanges. He thinks, deliriously happy, riding the high of blood loss, 'I am still useful'.
