Summary
Pancakes were easy to make. Pancakes were an old favorite, something that was just similar enough in ingredient list (flour; sugar; eggs; milk) to donuts that it was Vash’s God-given right to learn how to make ‘em. No leavening agent made them a faster throw-together dessert, but that didn’t mean they didn’t require patience and a skilled hand. One could easily fuck up pancakes as easily as one could, say, blow a giant hole in the moon. He’d made many-a burnt circle of ash in his time as a sometimes-useless baker and most of those weren’t even his fault. You try making a perfect pancake while in an active shootout. You try attending to that sensitive little bubble of dough while dodging your own customers rallying for your head on a sixty-billion double-dollar pike. Vash might’ve been a free man, now, but he was not taking any chances with something being made for someone as special as Milly Thompson.

Summary
The first person who’d started the trend was actually Miss Luida herself. When Meryl and Milly were interviewing her about the ongoing Noman recovery efforts, the topic of the Humanoid Typhoon had come up—and as smoothly as any other slimy, skilled politician constantly bathing in the public’s critical eye, Luida had hummed thoughtfully to herself, before lying straight through her teeth.
“Oh, Vash the Stampede?” Luida had said, never missing a beat. “Ahh. Yes. After everything, I heard he went bald from the stress. When do you suppose they’ll update his bounty poster?”
—And then she’d winked when Milly’s giggles made the camera move off of her face, and Meryl had smiled like she’d just found a nugget of pure gold in a pile of tomas shit.

Summary
Vash’s eyes have softened at the edges. Wolfwood doesn’t say anything, but Vash must have figured out for himself that something is on his mind. After a pause, Vash reaches out and nudges at Wolfwood’s shoulder, as if to signal for him to make space on the couch.
“‘s barely big enough even for me,” Wolfwood complains, but he nonetheless turns onto his side and allows Vash to climb on with him. He’s reminded of nights spent sharing beds in draughty inns, or huddled together in sleeping bags, and a part of him aches for the simplicity of those times—but Vash had always been so much more restrained back then. There isn’t an ounce of that old hesitation in the way Vash loops his arm around Wolfwood and tucks himself in close, head slotting into the crook of his neck.
Wolfwood reciprocates, in part because he wants to, and in part because there isn’t a whole lot of room on the couch to be doing much else.
---
Wolfwood and Vash share a night together after Wolfwood saves Vash from Legato and Knives, the night before Wolfwood leaves to face the consequences of his actions.

Summary
“Wolfwood,” Vash whispers. He shakes his head without taking his gaze off of Andy, who’s dropped his head. “It’s fine.”
Wolfwood shuts his mouth, though he doesn’t look happy about it. Vash isn’t sure he could ask for that anyway. When Vash rises to his feet, Andy lifts his face again, tears streaming off his cheeks. He’s grimacing, bared lips and clenched teeth, and for all the fury in his expression, it’s obvious what he’s feeling first and foremost is the pain.
Even if it wasn’t obvious, Vash knows exactly how he feels—has suffered through the same emotion every day for the past one hundred and fifty years, so he’d be able to identify it regardless.
“You killed my mom,” Andy whispers.
---
Vash and Wolfwood get involved in a feud that has nothing to do with them, as they always do. Lives are saved, but not all of them, and a child ends up orphaned, leaving Vash grappling with both his guilt and the remembered grief of when it happened to him.

Summary
(“you’ve been shot,” said Vash the Stampede, who shouldn’t’ve been there, who’d run away from home under Elendira’s watch at least two years before, maybe even longer ago than that. Nicholas had only seen him once or twice, but a face like that had been unforgettable.
“very astute.” There’d been copper and iron on his tongue, past his lips. “thanks for telling me.”
Vash’s hands covered his own and pressed down harder, his frown covering his whole face—furrowing his eyebrows, twisting his lips, scrunching his nose. Twins someone had told him at onboarding or whatever had passed for it, but the resemblance was passing. This had been someone different, distinct and disarming. A face broken in by softer expressions.
“keep that energy,” blood had been welling through Vash’s fingers, slower than it had been. The City said nothing in return. “i think i can fix this.”
“can i see your credentials?” His breath had blown bubbles through his chest. —and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning— “are you qualified for that?”
“i misspoke. you can take that energy down, like, half-a-watt.”)

Summary
There’s nothing all that special about the weather this morning though. It’s balmy, both suns high overhead by this hour, and there isn’t much of a breeze. The sunlight illuminates the bags under Nicholas’ eyes, the tousle of his hair, like he’s been running his hand through it again and again. Speaking of his hand, the one that lays over his lap twitches on occasion, as if he’d like to reach for another cigarette. He doesn’t, nor does he angle towards his pocket, but Meryl has to wonder if he would be showing so much restraint if he was still alone out here.
“...You don’t have to hold back on my account,” Meryl finally says.
“‘M trying to quit,” comes Nicholas’ drawled response. He cracks an eye open, peering at Meryl with a small slip of deep brown. “Besides, it’s rude to do in front of a lady.”
“You never seemed to care that much before,” Meryl notes, albeit with a smile.
---
Meryl wakes up to an empty bed and, suppressing her own feelings about it, sniffs out the reason why.

Summary
“Do you believe that all people are good?”
Wolfwood frowns around his cigarette. “Loaded question.”
“It isn’t,” Millie denies, then frowns. “Or, well, it is, but…” Her fingers drum at the swell of her cheek, a quick one-two-three pattern. She’s a fidgeter, Millie Thompson. Never obtrusively, but enough to give off the impression of needing to be constantly in motion. She’ll adjust her tie or tighten the strap of her stun gun, tug out a crease in her pants. Polite, never bothersome, but a little restless… It makes Wolfwood wonder what she might look like at home where she’s safe and doesn’t have to worry about being a burden to other people.
What a nasty word that is, burden. Wolfwood sucks hard on his cigarette like he could burn the thing off his tongue, as he’d like to with every other remnant he still has of his old mentor.
---
Millie approaches Wolfwood with a moral dilemma, of sorts.

Summary
Which isn’t inaccurate. He does have something to hide. Sometimes it does make Wolfwood feel sort of… rodent-like. Right now he just feels unambiguously gross, though, a little sticky. So he enters the bathroom and washes his hands again, drags the water down his face, then reluctantly steps back into the bedroom.
He’s two steps in when Vash suddenly appears in front of him—probably, had been standing in front of the doorway all along, and Wolfwood’s just too in his own head to have notices. Wolfwood jolts, and opens his mouth to chastise Vash for being sneaky, but Vash grabs his wrists before he can speak, turning his hands over to study his palms.
“Maybe lay off on the washing for tonight,” Vash suggests, at length. “You’re going to dry out your skin.”

Wolfwood comes back from a Gung Ho Guns meeting.

Summary
“...I’m… sore,” Wolfwood eventually says, sounding out the word tentatively. Vash’s eyes widen, and he bends his arm, already beginning to lever himself upright with his elbow. “‘S fine—we were just on the road for a while longer than I planned is all.”
“Wolfwood, I’m s—”
“If you say you’re sorry to me I’m gonna hit you,” Wolfwood warns. “I just—I’d feel wrong askin’ you for a massage without offering anything in return, so I thought we could trade off. You do me and I do you.”
The apologetic look vanishes from Vash’s face, leaving something more assessing in its place. He tilts his head, arguably with a neutral expression, but his eyes are so intense it’s hard to feel anything about him is ‘neutral’ in the first place. Wolfwood shifts his weight and swallows. As if he knows what to do with himself when Vash looks at him most of the time, but he feels weirdly exposed having laid his cards on the table, like Vash could just pore through the innermost contents of his mind and read them all out.
Eventually, Vash smiles, and Wolfwood knows he’s been had.
“You’re worried about me.”
---
Wolfwood wants to make things easier on Vash, however he can.

Summary
“This,” says Teng Xiao, attempting to rest a hand on the child's shoulder, who sidesteps the gesture with remarkable ease, “is Yanqing. He walked into the Seat of Divine Foresight an hour ago demanding to talk to the Arbiter-General.”
Jing Yuan waits for him to continue, and they stand in an awkward silence for a moment as he realises that is the end of the statement. “Was he unhappy with your service?” Jing Yuan inclines, holding his hands behind his back and fiddling with his fingers.
Teng Xiao brings up a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose in a bizarre gesture of discomfort, and sighs. “No. For some reason, he believes that you are the current Arbiter-General of the Luofu.”

Summary
Wolfwood looks different. Different than even the hundreds of ghosts—threads of shimmering grey shot through his temples and fine lines splintered out around his eyes like someone dragged a feather through damp clay. Like he’s aged almost decade in the year since he—
“Died,” Vash rasps. “You died.”
Wolfwood’s eyebrows shoot up in an expression that Vash has remembered so many times that his own faulty memory rewrote over the real thing.
“This isn’t—how?” he asks, voice warping around the cold static clogging his mouth.
“You ever hear of Jesus Christ?” Wolfwood grins, and it’s exactly the same. Like no time has passed. Like he’s so proud of his stupid joke. Like Vash didn’t lay his still-warm corpse in the ground and bury him on the other side of that building.
Like the inexorable inspiral of a binary star, Vash is drawn back to the orphanage in December and the unexpectedly empty grave of his dearest friend.
Or, Vash and Wolfwood and all their tomorrows.
