The automaton stood in the doorway, a wreck of herself. Her cloak was shredded, armor dented and split, glowing fluid trickling down her side. Sparks snapped weakly from her joints. Her movements were stilted, each step a halting calculation.
Jahoda’s first instinct was to lash out. “What, did you trip over your own shiny legs? You look like—”
Her voice cut off. Ineffa’s eyes, normally sharp and steady, were dimming.
“…I require assistance,” Ineffa said softly, her tone measured even as her systems faltered.
Or: Nefer always said she’d wind up with her hands all over Ineffa…

The world seemed to tilt sideways. Jahoda stood up on shaky legs. "We're... you think we're dating?"
Ineffa's expression shifted, her systems clearly struggling to process contradictory information. Her optical sensors dimmed and brightened rapidly. "Error. Statement does not compute. Jahoda, running diagnostic: are you experiencing cognitive malfunction? Scanning for head trauma indicators—"
"I'm not—Ineffa, stop." Jahoda pressed her hands to her face. "We're not dating. We've never been dating."
Silence. When Jahoda looked up, Ineffa had gone completely still, the tray trembling slightly in her hands.

Jahoda stared at her, incredulous. “You’re— you’re jealous?”
“I am… unfamiliar with that term’s sensation,” Ineffa said carefully, “but I believe it applies.”
Jahoda laughed once, incredulously, not cruelly, but from disbelief. “Archons, Ineffa, you’re impossible! You can’t just— you don’t feel things like that. You’re a—”
She stopped herself before saying the word machine, but the silence finished it for her.
The faint glow behind Ineffa’s eyes dimmed. “I see.”
Or: Sometimes Jahoda wishes she could shut her big, stupid mouth. Luckily, Ineffa has a way of shutting it for her.

Jahoda froze mid-step, heart slamming so hard it felt physical. She could feel her face heating instantly, ears burning beneath her hat.
Ineffa looked up as well.
“Oh,” she said.
Jahoda cursed internally. “I mean— it’s just a tradition. You don’t have to— we can move. It’s not mandatory.”
“I know what mistletoe signifies,” Ineffa said calmly.
“You do?” Jahoda squeaked.
