Finding your soulmate is supposed to be beautiful. You stand in front of someone and you say their full name; they say yours. Your soulmarks appear somewhere on your bodies, and it's supposed to be beautiful. Life-changing.
It's not supposed to happen a week before the World Juniors tournament in a dirty Saskatchewan parking lot. It's not supposed to be Canada's newest darling hockey player and your future rival who whispers your name. It's not supposed to be a boy that your skin blooms for.
And if that does happen, despite the fact that it shouldn't, you're definitely not supposed to lie to your soulmate's face, refuse to say his name in return, and pretend that you never felt your soulmark appear at all. And if that happens, somehow, you're definitely not supposed to kiss him less than a year later. And then later. And then later. “Good, well then that brings me to the real topic of conversation.” Another sigh from Coach Wiebe, “As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, those highlighted names have been offered rookie contracts and they’ve each expressed interest in living with a vet for their first year.”
Ilya felt his heart fall into his stomach, afraid of the next words to come out of his Coach’s mouth.
“We asked the rookies who they’d like to live with and, well, LaPointe wanted to board with you, Chouinard. And Young with you, Bood,” Wiebe then turned to Ilya who had frozen on the spot, “And Roz, Haas wants to live with you.”
Bood and Chouinard chuckled as they watched Ilya’s eyes widen in horror.

Luca Haas was drafted 2nd overall by the Ottawa Centaurs in 2018. Two years later, he anxiously moved halfway across the world to play his rookie season with the team. He requested to live with Ilya Rozanov and they slowly became family.

Summary
When Coach Wiebe suggests that Luca Haas should move in with Ilya for a while, as both of them seem lonely, Ilya nearly loses his mind. Not only does this mean he will see Shane even less than before, but it also means that the Centaurs have realised that Ilya's mental health is suffering. The worst part is that when Ilya tells Shane about it, Shane actually supports the idea, saying that it might be good for Ilya and Luca.
Turns out it's the second-best thing that has ever happened to Ilya.
