Once Jonathan paid him a little attention, he wouldn’t go the hell away. It was impossible to just ignore him, since he seemed to like being ignored―it must’ve been the thrill of the chase. There was a solid six months where he was almost always on the phone or in Jonathan’s bedroom, flipping his fucking hair around and drawling translate this for me, Byers. What’s our friend Robert Smith saying?
Jonathan has tried throwing rocks at him, metaphorically speaking; he’s been mean and he’s been honest; he’s left the most pessimistic parts of himself in charge.
And somehow, despite it all, Steve is still here.

For a while it got easier, through brute-force avoidance and then moving across the country, thousands of miles away from anyone who felt like a real person.
But then you come back―of course you do―and it’s worse than you could’ve ever imagined, because you’re faced with the reality of it.
The reality of Nancy, who says they’ll just have to put off Emerson by a year or two and leaves no room for argument. Jonathan lives in her house, for fuck’s sake, and he’d be hard-pressed to remember the last time they touched that didn’t involve them both going for the salt shaker at the same time.
But there are worse things than Nancy. Something he can no longer avoid.
Because he isn’t actually an eternal eleventh grader, coiled and ready to strike in the back alley of every dream Jonathan has had for four years.

Jonathan clears his throat, sinks a little lower in his armchair, and lifts yesterday’s edition of The Egyptian Gazette higher, obscuring the blush he knows he can’t control.
“I have no idea how I’m supposed to answer that, dear sister,” he replies, “seeing as I have absolutely no idea what the current bestselling novels are.”
When Jonathan writes an adventure—definitely not a romance, thank you—novel based on the whole Imhotep debacle, he doesn't expect it to become the bestselling pulp sensation of the decade. With hindsight, perhaps he should have made some of the real life parallels less obvious, especially when it comes to the dashing romantic lead, Abir Rey.
Thankfully, there are no bookshops in the desert, so the chances of Ardeth reading it are blessedly slim.

It wasn’t unusual for Naruto to wander the neighborhood at night. With the moon and stars as his company, he didn’t ask for much more, but then he met a boy on the roof. A boy bathed in the moonlight with eyes like the night itself.
Although Sasuke was a senior, it hardly mattered as they seemed to have something in common. Both were lonely. Both starved for love.
As high as Sasuke climbed to escape his reality, Naruto refused to stay on the ground. No matter the height, he felt willing to take the fall; as long as they could fall together.
“I wonder what’s scarier: falling off of a building or falling in love with someone.”
