“Oh, jealous?” Mitsuki said slyly. “Should you really be telling that to your boyfriend’s older brother?”
An awkward laugh. “I mean… that’s different,” Riku was definitely pouting, Iori could tell from his tone of voice. He had certainly heard it enough to know what it sounded like. “Doesn’t everyone want a prince-like experience at least once?"

“Iori~!” Riku whined again. He stopped suddenly, moving to hold them with one hand and grabbing at Iori’s sleeve with the other. “I know. You should pick for me.”
Iori narrowed his eyes, this seemed like Riku just didn’t want to have to choose anymore. “I already told you I have no opinion between the two.”
“No, not that. You should choose a whole outfit for me!” Riku was positively shining and bouncing with energy. “You can dress me up however you want.”
“You are not a doll,” Iori sighed, “I won’t be doing that.”

“What is it that you wanted help with? Did something happen with Azuki?” Nansen asked.
At least someone was concerned. Though he could have done without the groaning and reluctance earlier.
“Nothing has happened,” Sanchoumou said soothingly. He reached out to stroke Nansen’s hair, it was so bouncy and soft. Like a cute animal. “I read in a magazine given to me by Midare that one should give gifts to their partners on special occasions. Anniversaries particularly. It is Azuki and I’s two month anniversary. I wish to give him a gift, a very good one as I missed our first month.”

Mitsuki groaned, leaning back on the sofa. “What to do?” he hummed. “It feels wrong to not do anything for Iori’s birthday.”
“We could still have a party,” Tamaki said, “we have everything for it.”
“Tamaki-kun, shush,” Sougo hissed, a finger raised to his lips.
The not-so-secret-surprise-birthday-party. When everyone gets one it really stops being a surprise, and they were all really bad at keeping secrets anyway.
“I am fine without a party,” Iori said with the utmost honesty.

"Chuuya—"
"Don't fucking—*don't!* Fucking SPARE me! I don't need your or anyone else's help! You are the LAST person who has the right to offer me anything! FUCK!” Chuuya shrieks, then he collapses onto the floor screaming.
The floor shatters under him as For the Tainted Sorrow roars in his veins.
“Shit,” he curses, watching fragments of the floor start to float up around him. “Shit-shit-shit!"
His hands are shaking, but he can’t get gravity to respond. He can’t get his own body to respond.
Then a cool hand lands on his shoulder, and everything clatters back to the ground.*“I won’t leave you.”*
Or, Chuuya breaks, and Dazai spends a year putting his pieces back together, no matter how many times he cuts his fingers on their sharp edges.
At the end, they’re both softer for it.Epilogue starts at chapter 39!

Summary
Best friends is too simple a term to squash the entire dynamic of Dazai Osamu and Nakahara Chuuya within.
Sure, they’ve known each other since they were children, and they’re each other’s #1 on their best friend lists on Snapchat, and Chuuya’s been seen one too many times in his hoodies. People have also noticed how Dazai’s main muse for his volunteer hobby of polaroid photographer is the redhead himself.
But the pranks they pull on each other isn’t much of a ‘best friend’ thing to do.
Especially when one of the pranks get pulled so far,
That Chuuya is forbidden from seeing Dazai ever again.
