Summary
“You must be the new owner,” he says as he makes his way to the bottom of the stairs, reaching out his hand for her to shake. “I’m Jack, the upstairs tenant.”
Jack.
Ms. Hobbs had always referred to the upstairs tenant as Jackie. Samira was expecting a young woman, a vague picture of someone sweet and serious from Ms. Hobb’s descriptions. Not this man with thighs the size of tree trunks, blinking up at her curiously as he waits for her to respond.

He cocks an eyebrow at her. “You’re a guest in my house Samira. I expect you to act like one, and that means eating breakfast when I offer.”

Summary
Day 1: First Times
First 'I love you's.
His eyes are heavy-lidded, mouth still slick from their kiss when he says, "God, I love you."
The bubble bursts.
“What?” she breathes.
Nice, pretty, well-adjusted girls—girls who are ready for a relationship—don’t sprint out of the room when someone says I love you. They smile softly, kiss them back, maybe tear up a little (a cute, appropriate, romcom-acceptable amount), and say I love you, too. They certainly do not flee wearing nothing but said person’s boxers like some kind of emotionally stunted bandit that only hits in the morning hours.
Samira is decidedly not a nice, normal girl. She is a panicked, malfunctioning fire alarm of a human being whose brain short‑circuits at the mere suggestion of emotional vulnerability. A girl who hears I love you and responds with the fight‑or‑flight instincts of a cornered raccoon.

Day 2: Yearning
Goodbyes.
“How dare you?!” She pushes past him, shoulder brushing his chest, storming into the house like she owns the air inside it.
“I’m sorry.” Is all he has to say.
“You have the nerve to not say anything. For years! Then two days before I get on a plane... you slip a note in my locker? And then you—” her voice cracks around the edges, “—and then you leave before I could even see you. Before I can even talk to you about it.”
Jack closes the door quietly, almost gently, as if any sudden movement might set her off further. He stays near it, hands in his pockets, watching her pace tight circles across the foyer tile.
“That was the goal,” he says, barely above a murmur.
Two days before Samira boards a plane to California, she finds a note in her locker.

Summary
The idea of her, ready and waiting, has any patience crumbling. The comforter is peeled away slowly, quietly; he doesn’t want to disturb her as she sleeps peacefully. She’s wearing his shirt, the grey one that he’d lost their first month of dating and only saw again when she moved in. She looks like an angel with her hair haloed around her head, in his shirt, in his bed.
His hands reach for her without hesitation.

Summary
Hours later – after blood and guts and a life saved on the kind of Hail Mary that makes her brain sing – Jack Abbot turns towards her and grins. Arms folded across his body and his eyes more than a little bit wild; like the mess of it all thrills him the same way it thrills her. "I'd heard you were good, Mohan," he tells her easily, "but hoo-boy, was that something to watch."
