Shanks holds out his hand, palm up, an offer. The gesture unmoors Luffy. Memories flood his mind’s eye—of all the times Shanks offered his hand so long ago, and Luffy took it. Of holding that hand on walks to the beach or the cliffs or the harbor. Of wandering with him, of going someplace to play. Of a night ten years ago, back before Shanks saved him; of sitting in Partys Bar, of a band playing music—Luffy excitedly bouncing on his stool as he watched the pirates dance and sing. A tapping on his shoulder, turning to see Shanks next to him. Shank offering his hand, and Luffy taking it, and Shanks guiding him to the dance floor.
The warmth and roughness of his palm. The gentle hold. Shanks saying “Kick off your shoes and stand on my feet…there you go, kid.” Shanks grasping Luffy’s other hand, and swaying them back and forth, a teetering dance. Luffy laughing, and laughing—laughing himself silly. On and on, the joy.
Shanks does not know it’s him behind the mask.
Luffy is not supposed to be here.
