"SHANE-1, activate your introduction protocol."
Shane's eyes focus on me. When he speaks, his voice is male, neutral, soft even, but with a slight synthetic quality. Not quite human but close enough to be disconcerting.
"Hello, Mr. Rozanov," he says. "I am Synthetic Healthcare and Advanced Nursing Evaluation system. Or otherwise known simply as SHANE. My primary function is to assist with your medical care and daily living activities. I am here to help you."
I look at Shane. He stands perfectly still on the charging pad, watching me with those unsettling brown eyes. There's no expression on his face. No indication of what he's thinking, if he's even thinking at all.
"So.." I say finally, "What now?"
"I am here to assist you," Shane says. "What do you need?"

Or, by the time Ilya arrives in Baltimore, he already has outlived every prediction doctors have made about him. The disease is getting worse. The treatments aren't working. And the android they assigned to his care is having an increasingly difficult time thinking of itself as a machine.
As the years pass, Ilya begins to lose pieces of himself. Shane remembers everything.

Summary
Shane knows about the sensitive spot behind Ilya’s ear. He knows how long it will take to walk from Montreal to Boston, until his feet are bloody. He knows what Ilya tastes like after he’s had a cup of coffee. He knows about all the women Ilya takes home. But Shane also knows Ilya talks in his sleep. These small intricacies of their love is what keeps Shane’s head above water. There’s only a hint of an ache when he hears Ilya’s name. Ilya kisses him and that ache is now more apparent. Ilya kisses him and he unravels. No one is to blame. It’s just the way these things go. But it wasn’t until that day in the locker room, when he heard the news, that he realized just how much he had to lose.
or, Ilya is lured away by his own sadness. Shane goes after him.
