The small town opened before her like an hand, and beyond it, only rolling hills called her name.
She sprang onto the windowsill, filled her lungs with the freshness of the world, and then she was off.
Only the line of salt, inadvertently broken by the light stepping of a boot, held any evidence of her presence.

"Do you not think they call to me as they do to you?" he asked quietly, a strange longing in his voice, and Sparrow felt her mouth go dry. Nervously, she licked her lips and approached the railing once more.
The King of dreams stood straight-backed at the far end, in armor black as night and with silver shining in his hair. His sharp profile was a study in black and white, all harsh shadows and alabaster skin pulled taught over angular bones.
He seemed endlessly hungry, but for what - she had no way of knowing.
He said: "When they dream they speak to me, and I am compelled to listen. When you dream, Sparrow, you sing to me."
