Summary
But would Ellie really want to hear from him after so much silence? She had asked for him to keep her up to date on how things went, but… He wasn’t good at relationships of any sort. What did he even say? “Hi. How are you? I think I’ve only managed to make things even worse by being here. To no one’s surprise. Would you please tell me how to not fuck up reconnecting with my daughter, whose life I only ever seem to unnecessarily complicate whether I’m in it or not?” Ridiculous.
Plagued by the fear that he will fail to be a good parent to Daisy after coming back to Sandbrook, Alec speaks to Ellie again for the first time since leaving Broadchurch. Afterwards, he and Daisy take another step towards healing the rift that the last few years have created between them.

Summary
Daisy Hardy knew that there were only two possible reasons for her dad to take time off from his job: his bosses were forcing him to stay home because he had been overworking himself, or there was something catastrophically wrong with his health. Given that one typically led to the other, she had come to a very simple conclusion.
Her dad must be dying. Again.
Hearing about an upcoming pacemaker checkup sends Daisy into a deep spiral of worry over her dad and what little she knows about his current health status, while Alec contemplates just how much his daughter has improved his outlook on and quality of life as the checkup proceeds without issue. While fretting over conversations they've always avoided, intentionally or otherwise, both of them realize that a lot of things have been left unsaid that need saying.

Her mind then went to the late nights spent at each other’s houses: the amount of bodily contact as they hunched over a coffee table covered in files, the tired cuddles that happened when they could barely keep their eyes open or had had one too many glasses, the playful shoves and her light, annoyed smacks to his shoulder when he was being a bit of a nuisance that he took with a fond smile. Why she hadn’t clocked until now that he was a physically affectionate person with the people he cared about was beyond her. She felt like a bit of an idiot for taking so long to notice.
Ellie reflects on how her and Alec's friendship has changed over the years after she begins noticing how comfortable they've both grown with physical touch between them.

On the phone were two people, one of which she was incredibly familiar with. Professor Anthony Crowley sat comfortably upon a bench in a park she did not recognise, lent back in that lazed pose she recognised from his lectures where he appeared incapable of sitting on a chair properly. He was easy to identify with his orange hair and lanky frame, who wasn’t easy to identify, was the person beside him.
