Unprofessional, he thought, his jaw tightening. The weight of his swollen abdomen pressed against the edge of the desk, a constant reminder of the situation he found himself in. Seven days. It had been seven days since Gregor had… done this to him, and the imposter had all but vanished since. No explanations. No follow-up. Just the occasional shadow flickering in the corners of his vision, the telltale twitch of a segmented arm retreating into a vent.
Meursault shifted in his chair, the movement causing a slick warmth to coat his inner thighs. His breath hitched, and he bit the inside of his cheek hard enough to draw blood. This wasn’t him. This wasn’t how he operated. Methodical. Clinical. Detached. That was who he was - who he needed to be. But his body refused to comply.
“Extremely unprofessional,” he muttered under his breath, his voice a low growl of frustration.

The researcher let out a startled noise, his struggles intensifying. His chain-link belt clinked against the vent’s edge as he tried to push himself forward. The noise snapped Gregor out of his thoughts. He flexed his segmented arm, preparing to strike, but then stopped.
“C’mon, Greg,” he muttered again. “Stick to the plan. He’s just another crew member. Just another kill.”
But he couldn’t move. Instead, he found himself wondering if Meursault might serve a… different purpose. Slowly, he stepped closer to the vent, his movements silent, his gaze fixed on the researcher’s trapped form. He leaned against the wall just outside, watching as Sault’s muttering turned into an exasperated groan. There was no rush. He could afford a moment to think: to assess all his options.
“Real knowledge required sacrifices, huh?” Gregor whispered under his breath, a smirk forming on his lips. “Let’s see how much you’re willing to give.”
