“My name is Veritas Ratio.”
It was a pointless offering. What good was the name of a scholar to a boy in iron shackles? Soon, the boy would procure another wound, and this time, Ratio would not be there to halt the infection. He was a man of vast influence, intellect, and interest, yet sitting on the edge of this cot, he had never felt so utterly powerless.
The clever boy raised a hand to his own chest, his gemstone eyes catching the dim light. “Kakavasha.”
A decade after the IPC declares sovereignty over Sigonia-IV, Dr. Veritas Ratio accompanies Oswaldo Schneider on a diplomatic mission to discuss reparations. Stepping into the wrong door, Ratio expects to find a local liaison. Instead, he finds a bleeding Avgin boy and a circular chessboard.

Aventurine is sick, stubborn, and convinced he can out-charm the flu. Ratio, ever his partner in crime and common sense, isn't buying it. It turns out collapsing post-presentation is a great way to skip work for the day and end up in a really cute doctor's bed.

Aventurine makes a vague gesture. “Bad dreams. You’re probably familiar with it.”
“The touch of the Nihility affects everyone differently. Until I know your exact symptoms, I won’t be able to treat you.”
Aventurine closes his eyes, for a moment, and opens them. “Old memories,” he says, finally. “A lot sharper than they should be. Like I’m really there, watching it happen.”
(After Penacony, Aventurine's been having some bad dreams. He starts seeing a Doctor of Chaos about it. Ratio gets roped in to help. Aventurine's not happy about any of it; and anyway, it's all pointless, isn't it?)
