Summary
Katara aimed her own set of polar bear-puppy eyes in Sokka’s direction, with a distinctly panicked slant to her mouth. He gulped, then took a deep breath and squared his shoulders. “Look, uh, Aang, and Zuko- there- there aren’t any southern waterbenders anymore. And. There haven’t been any airbenders either, not in a hundred years, when Sozin’s Comet kinda kickstarted the war.”
The baby dragon made an unhappy squeak as its owner staggered backwards to drop onto his butt in the snow.

For a moment he focused on what seemed to be the truth. Zuko was once again seven years old. He was no longer thirty nor was he Fire Lord, so he had to do away with that mindset. Zuko was seven and had just excelled at his first ever Firebending lessons. Azula was five and still unsure of her role in the universe, his Mother was still with him, Ozai was plotting to take the throne, and Aang was twelve and frozen in a block of ice.
Zuko has been Fire Lord for over twenty years when he falls into the past. Quickly realizing he is a combatant in the battle for Azula's soul, he also comes to understand that ---as her older brother--- he has the chance to be the only player in the game.

In which Lu Ten isn't dead, and conveniently notices the avatar isn't either. Considering the world thinks both of them are dead, it's really only logical that he helps the avatar finish the war. It doesn’t take Suki and Hakoda long to reach a conclusion: why limit themselves to escaping the Boiling Rock when they could stage a coup in the Fire Nation as well?

Summary
Hakoda knows he's out of the loop when it comes to Zuko. After all, the first time he saw Sokka since leaving to fight in the war, Sokka mentioned the angry jerk with a ponytail that was chasing them.
The next time he saw his kids, Katara was furious with Zuko for apparently betraying her to help Azula take over Ba Sing Se.
Then, he gets shipped off to the Boiling Rock after the invasion and Sokka, disguised as a guard, tells him Zuko is there and helping.
Before Hakoda knows what's happening, Sozin's Comet has arrived and suddenly Zuko is the Fire Lord.
Zuko is now one of the most powerful people in the world, more powerful than Hakoda.
So why is the Fire Lord, a master firebender with unmatched sword skills, wary of a nonbender whose only real advantage is his height?
Hakoda has seen the dark looks on his children's faces (and yes, that includes Suki and Toph and Aang, and no, Hakoda doesn't know when or how that happened) whenever Ozai is mentioned. He's heard General Iroh sneer his brother's name.
And Zuko?

The Gaang finds out about Zuko's scar. It's not exactly shocking - at this point, they've made some assumptions already - but any dad who would hurt their child doesn't deserve to be a dad. Sokka decides to remedy this for Zuko.
